A Report On Nurses' Response To Occupational Injuries And Exposures To Hazards In A Californian Community Hospital, Sandra Kilminster-Binder Jan 2001

A Report On Nurses' Response To Occupational Injuries And Exposures To Hazards In A Californian Community Hospital, Sandra Kilminster-Binder

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study set out to determine the reasons for underreporting of occupational injuries and exposures in the American health care environment. A cross sectional survey was used to report the responses and opinions of nurses who failed to report all occupational injuries and exposures, and the type of injuries that are least likely to be reported. The participants were a random sample of Registered Nurses employed in a California Health Care Center, who responded to a simple self-reporting questionnaire. The study revealed that the majority of occupational injuries, accidents and exposures by this group in the previous twelve month period …

The Market For Medical Ethics, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2001

The Market For Medical Ethics, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

At the core of Kenneth Arrow’s classic 1963 essay on medical uncertainty is a claim that has failed to carry the day among economists. This claim—that physician adherence to an anti-competitive ethic of fidelity to patients and suppression of pecuniary influences on clinical judgment pushes medical markets toward social optimality—has won Arrow near-iconic status among medical ethicists (and many physicians). Yet conventional wisdom among health economists, including several participants in this symposium, holds that this claim is either naïve or outdated. Health economists admire Arrow’s article for its path-breaking analysis of market failures resulting from information asymmetry, uncertainty, and moral …

Frequency Of Use Of The Various Classes Of Removable Partial Dentures And Selection Of Major Connectors And Direct / Indirect Retainers, Fi̇li̇z Keyf Jan 2001

Frequency Of Use Of The Various Classes Of Removable Partial Dentures And Selection Of Major Connectors And Direct / Indirect Retainers, Fi̇li̇z Keyf

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Selecting the individually suitable form of and location for the major connectors in partially edentulous patients is important. The purpose of classifying removable partial dentures (RPDs) is to simplify identification. Classification also allows for a longitudinal comparison of various classes of RPDs as well as the determination of whether the teaching of RPD design is consistent with the relative frequencies of RPD use. This study surveyed the various types of RPDs being fabricated in a dental laboratory and compared those findings with the data from a previous study. Results indicated that mandibular RPDs are more common than maxillary RPDs, and …

A Comparative Clinical And Histopathological Examination Of Hemangioma And Chronic Inflammatory Enlargement Of Gingiva, Umur Sakallioğlu, Gökhan Açikgöz, Tuğrul Kirtiloğlu, Musa Aldikaçti Jan 2001

A Comparative Clinical And Histopathological Examination Of Hemangioma And Chronic Inflammatory Enlargement Of Gingiva, Umur Sakallioğlu, Gökhan Açikgöz, Tuğrul Kirtiloğlu, Musa Aldikaçti

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement (CIGE) occasionally exhibits some similarities with hemangioma (Hm) by means of the clinical and histopathological features of gingiva. When compared with hemangioma, CIGE is more frequently encountered by the dental profession. However, Hm is rarely seen on gingiva and it has a non-inflammatory nature and mostly congenital origin. The present paper reports the clinic and histopathologic features of CIGE and Hm of gingiva in patients referred to our clinic suffering primarily from gingival overgrowth. Twenty-one patients were diagnosed as having CIGE (in a 4-month period) and 10 patients were diagnosed as having Hm (in a 12-month …

Ultrasonographic Measurement Of Periodontal Attachment Levels, John Edward Lynch Jan 2001

Ultrasonographic Measurement Of Periodontal Attachment Levels, John Edward Lynch

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Periodontal disease is one of the two major causes of tooth loss today, and has been associated with several systemic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, the most widely used diagnostic tool for assessment of periodontal diseases, measurement of periodontal attachment loss with a manual probe, may overestimate attachment loss by as much as 2mm in untreated sites, while underestimating attachment loss by an even greater margin following treatment. Manual probing is also invasive, which causes patient discomfort.;This work describes the development and testing of an ultrasonographic periodontal probe designed to replace manual probing. …

Role Of Ampa And Glur5 Kainate Receptors In The Development And Expression Of Amygdala Kindling In The Mouse, Michael A. Rogawski, Philip S. Kurzman, Shun-Ichi Yamaguchi, He Li Dec 2000

Role Of Ampa And Glur5 Kainate Receptors In The Development And Expression Of Amygdala Kindling In The Mouse, Michael A. Rogawski, Philip S. Kurzman, Shun-Ichi Yamaguchi, He Li

Michael A. Rogawski

The role of AMPA and GluR5-containing kainate receptors in the development and expression of amygdala kindling was examined using the selective 2,3-benzodiazepine AMPA receptor antagonist GYKI 52466 [(1-(4-aminophenyl)-4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-5H-2, 3-benzodiazepine] and the decahydroisoquinoline mixed AMPA receptor and GluR5 kainate receptor antagonist LY293558 {(3S,4aR,6R, 8aR)-6-[2-(1(2)H-tetrazole-5-yl)ethyl]decahydroisoquinoline- 3-carboxy lic acid)}. Administration of GYKI 52466 (5-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and LY293558 (10-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) prior to daily kindling stimulation in mice produced a dose-dependent suppression of the rate of development of behavioral kindled seizure activity and reduced the duration of the stimulation-induced electrographic afterdischarge. In drug-free stimulation sessions after the initial drug-treatment sessions, there was an …
