Factors Related To Resilience Abilities And Self-Care Practices In Adolescents, Sandra L. Solem Phd, Msn, Rn
Dissertations
Identification of resilience factors in adolescents is necessary to promote health and decrease the incidence of negative health outcomes related to risk-behaviors in this age group. The purpose of this descriptive-correlational research was twofold: (1) to investigate the inter-relationships of perceived health status, perceived self-efficacy, resilience abilities, self-care agency and self-care practices in adolescents and (2) to evaluate a revised measure, The Solem Adolescent Resilience Abilities Scale (SARAS-R). Orem's self-care theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The convenience sample of 100 adolescents from San Diego county in southern California were recruited through health professionals and secondary …

The family mealtime environment has great potential to affect the eating behaviors of youth in the family. It is difficult to determine the important elements of a healthy mealtime environment because a valid assessment of the family environment is so difficult to obtain. The objective of this study is to examine the level of agreement between adult and adolescent perceptions of the family mealtime environment and adolescent mealtime behavior. A telephone survey was used to query adult and adolescent family members about how they perceive the family mealtime environment and the adolescent's mealtime behavior. A convenience sample of 282 adult/adolescent …
Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Discrete Disability, Beth P. Hands, Dawne Larkin
Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Discrete Disability, Beth P. Hands, Dawne Larkin
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have a motor learning disability that reduces their ability to interact with the environment and compromises their social and emotional development. Accordingly, these children should be given the extra assistance and consideration given to children with other learning difficulties. Even though many countries have well developed policies to support students at educational risk, children with movement difficulties are not widely considered to be members of this category. This paper argues for a change in education policy and practice in order to better support children with DCD or Motor Learning Disability (MLD). Improved teacher education …

Effective mental illness prevention programs are important for the safety of youth and adolescents. Research suggests that programs should facilitate appropriate help-seeking by lowering help-seeking barriers. This study used focus groups to obtain high school student opinions about actual help-seeking behaviors, reducing adolescent help-seeking barriers, raising sensitive issues with adolescents, and increasing appropriate help-source engagement. Transcript analysis revealed several themes. Relationship and trust were key approach factors for current help-seeking. Memories of successful prior helping episodes were also important. Education about appropriate help-seeking, presented in ways consistent with those currently used by adolescents (e.g., through peer networks), might reduce help-seeking …
