Porcelain Repairing In Fixed Partial Denture(การซ่อมพอร์สเลนในฟันปลอมชนิดติดแน่น), Sarocha Chalothorn, Issarawan Boonsiri

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

In the past, porcelain repair was not successful because of the failure of composite bonding. Currently, several porcelain repairing systems are well developed by using composite resin which bonds to metal or porcelain by mechanical and chemical bonds. Silicoater technique, which uses silane coupling agent combined with bonding agents will improve the life time of porcelain repair. The objective of this literature review is to discuss the methods of metal and porcelain surface treatments. These include the use of diamond burs, sandblasts, acid etching, types of bonding agents and types of composite resins that result in bonding. There are two …

Large-Scale Synthesis And Functional Elements For The Antimicrobial Activity Of Defensins, Periathamby A. Raj, K. J. Antonyraj, T. Karunakaran

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Human neutrophil defensins, and their analogues incorporating anionic, hydrophobic or cationic residues at the N- and C-termini, were synthesized by solid-phase procedures. The synthetic defensins were examined for their microbicidal activity against Candida albicans, two Gram-negative bacteria (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and two Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans). The human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP1) and HNP2 were found to be potent candidacidal agents. HNP3, which differs by one amino acid at the N-terminus of its sequence, was totally inactive. The Gram-negative bacteria A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis and the Gram-positive bacteria S. gordonii and S. mutans were …

Kinetic Characterization Of Tetracycline Binding And Release By Demineralized Bone - Dfdba, Orner Kabil

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The microbial etiology of periodontal diseases has led to widespread research in the development of methods and local delivery systems to increase the efficacy of antibiotic therapy. Several drug delivery systems employing biodegradable and nonbiodegradable carriers have been shown to release antibiotics directly into periodontal pockets. The purpose of this study was to determine the binding and release kinetics of tetracycline by demineralized bone. Further aspects of the study include in vitro evaluation of DFDBA (demineralized freeze-dried bone allografts) as a tetracycline carrier system for periodontal therapy. Experiments were performed which employed different tetracycline concentrations with constant amounts of bone …

Growth predictions were carried out by ZeroBaseTM from ages 6,9,12,14,16 in males and 6,9,12 and 14 in females. The mean computer predicted value was compared with the mean radiographic value to test the accuracy of the predictions. Predictions from age 14 were the most accurate (within one standard deviation), whereas the predictions from age 6 were the least accurate. In males, the accuracy of cranial base predictions was 73.3%, …

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich Mar 2000

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Periradicular lesions develop as a result of the interaction between root canal irritants and the immune system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the periradicular response of immunodeficient rats to their oral flora. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats received a total body irradiation dose of 750 cGy one week prior to the investigation. The pulps of the mandibular first molars of these animals and six nonirradiated rats were exposed mechanically with a ½ round bur and left open to the oral cavity. Additional irradiation (350 cGy) was administered bi-weekly to maintain immunosuppression. Periradicular specimens were obtained after two and four …

Efficient Gene Transfer By Transferrin Lipoplexes In The Presence Of Serum, Conchita Tros De Ilarduya, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cationic lipids are being used increasingly as reagents for gene delivery both in vitro and in vivo. One of the limitations to the application of cationic lipid-DNA complexes (lipoplexes) in vivo is the inhibition of gene delivery by serum. In this study, we have shown that transferrin (Tf)-lipoplexes, which had transferrin adsorbed at their surface via electrostatic interactions, are much more effective than plain lipoplexes in transfecting cells in the presence of relatively high concentrations (up to 60%) of fetal bovine serum (FBS). Serum even enhanced transfection by Tf-lipoplexes composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane (DOTAP)/dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE)/pCMVLacZ at high lipid/DNA (+/-) charge …

Human Serum Albumin Enhances Dna Transfection By Lipoplexes And Confers Resistance To Inhibition By Serum, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, Pedro Pires, Rogério Gaspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cationic liposome-DNA complexes ('lipoplexes') are used as gene delivery vehicles and may overcome some of the limitations of viral vectors for gene therapy applications. The interaction of highly positively charged lipoplexes with biological macromolecules in blood and tissues is one of the drawbacks of this system. We examined whether coating cationic liposomes with human serum albumin (HSA) could generate complexes that maintained transfection activity. The association of HSA with liposomes composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane and dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine, and subsequent complexation with the plasmid pCMVluc greatly increased luciferase expression in epithelial and lymphocytic cell lines above that obtained with plain lipoplexes. The …

Pulpal Tissue In Bilateral Talon Cusps Of Primary Central Incisors: Report Of A Case, H. Cem Güngör, Nil Altay, F. Figen Kaymaz

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Talon cusp is a tooth anomaly that affects both the primary and the permanent dentitions. However, the occurrence of this anomalous cusp is rather infrequent in the primary dentition. Only 7 cases of bilateral talon cusps affecting the primary teeth have been reported in the dental literature. This is a case report of bilateral talon cusps on primary maxillary central incisors whose histologic evaluation revealed the existence of pulpal tissue in the anomalous cusps.

Unusual Tooth Sensation Due To Maxillary Sinusitis--A Case Report, W.C. Ngeow Jan 2000

Unusual Tooth Sensation Due To Maxillary Sinusitis--A Case Report, W.C. Ngeow

Wei Cheong Ngeow

Maxillary sinusitis can cause pain or discomfort to the maxillary dentition but no report of patients complaining of a "jumping tooth sensation" during sinusitis has been recorded in the literature. This article presents a case of an unusual localised sensation from a maxillary right second premolar experienced while undergoing root canal treatment. This sensation was felt during walking while the patient was suffering an episode of influenza. This sensation first occurred following debridement of the root canal. However, it persisted even after the root canal had been sealed. A hypothetical explanation of this manifestation is proposed.

Red Man Syndrome During Administration Of Prophylactic Antibiotic Against Infective Endocarditis, W.C. Ngeow, W. L. Chai, A. B. Moody

Wei Cheong Ngeow

Red man syndrome (RMS) is the occurrence flushing, pruritus, chest pain, muscle spasm or hypotension during vancomycin infusion. It usually happens as a result of rapid infusion of the drug but may also occur after slow administration. The frequency and severity of this phenomenon diminish with repeated administration of vancomycin. A case is presented whereby RMS occurred while prophylactic antibiotic against infective endocarditis was administered.

The prevalence of ORAS detected during the oral examination (average point prevalence) was found to be 0.5% (64 subjects). ORAS formed 5.7% of all lesions detected during the survey. The average point prevalence of ORAS was highest in the indigenous …

The Effect Of Edta In Attachment Gain And Root Coverage, Moawia M. Kassab, Robert E. Cohen, Sebastiano Andreana, Andrew R. Dentino Jan 2000

The Effect Of Edta In Attachment Gain And Root Coverage, Moawia M. Kassab, Robert E. Cohen, Sebastiano Andreana, Andrew R. Dentino

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Root surface biomodification using low pH agents such as citric acid and tetracycline has been proposed to enhance root coverage following connective tissue grafting. The authors hypothesized that root conditioning with neutral pH edetic acid would improve vertical recession depth, root surface coverage, pocket depth, and clinical attachment levels. Twenty teeth in 10 patients with Miller class I and II recession were treated with connective tissue grafting. The experimental sites received 24% edetic acid in sterile distilled water applied to the root surface for 2 minutes before grafting. Controls were pretreated with only sterile distilled water. Measurements were evaluated before …
