The In Vitro Effect Of Plasmodium Bergheiantigen Lysate On Natural Killer (Nk) Cellcytotoxic Activity, Cemaletti̇n Albayi̇, Ayşegül Yücel, Kemal Çeber, Turgut İmi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Plasmodium berghei is the rodent equivalent of Plasmodium falciparum which causes cerebral malaria in humans. However, P. berghei does not cause cerebral malaria in BALB/c mice, instead it leads to parasitemia, fever and some degree of liver damage. Although different aspects of immunological response have been intensively investigated in malaria; this the first time the in vitro effect of P. berghei antigen lysate on murine NK cytotoxic activity was studied. It was observed that this parasite antigen lysate suppresed the cytolytic activity of NK cells in a dose-dependent manner. Because the suppression of NK cell activity in a dose-dependent manner …

Arginine Hydrolysis By Mycoplasma Fermentansisregulated By Glucose, Sema Aşkin Özcan Jan 1999

Arginine Hydrolysis By Mycoplasma Fermentansisregulated By Glucose, Sema Aşkin Özcan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Arginine metabolism by mycoplasmas has been reported to be correlated with pathogenicity. Since a clinically important mycoplasma; M. fermentans hydrolyses arginine as an energy source, the arginine metabolism amongst M. fermentans strains belonging to different isolation sites was investigated. Arginine hydrolysis was detected by the increase in NH 4+ concentration, measured using an NH 4+ -sensitive electrode. The method proved simple to use and gave reproducible results. In broth medium, arginine and glucose were both shown to act as energy sources for growth. It was also shown that, in contrast to previous work, glucose inhibited arginine hydrolysis during growth. There …

Opioid Modulation Of The Pre-Ovulatory Lh Surge In The Conscious Rat: Involvement Of Indolamines, Bayram Yilmaz, Desmond P. Gilmore Jan 1999

Opioid Modulation Of The Pre-Ovulatory Lh Surge In The Conscious Rat: Involvement Of Indolamines, Bayram Yilmaz, Desmond P. Gilmore

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Endogeonus opioid peptides play an important role in the generation of the pre-ovulatory LH surge. We investigated the interrelationship between the oploid and indolaminergic systems in the regutalion of LH secretion, and the involvement of \mu-and \kappa-opioid subtypes in this process. Concsious female rats bearing cannula in the femoral artery were injected intraperitoneally with \mu-(diamorphine) and \kappa -(U-50488H) opioid agonists either alone or with their respective antagonists, naloxone and MR2266, on pro-oestrus. Blood samples were collected hourly between 15.00 and 19.00 and plasma LH levels were measured by RIA. 5-HT and 5-HIAA concentrations were determined by HPLC-ECD in the MPOA, …

Immunohistochemical Study On Thepcna-Immunoreactivity In The Uterus Of Ratsovariectomized Or Treated With Antiestrogenclomiphene Citrate, Leyla Canpolat, İbrahi̇m Hani̇fi̇ Özercan, Nurten Bozlak, Cengi̇z Doğan Jan 1999

Immunohistochemical Study On Thepcna-Immunoreactivity In The Uterus Of Ratsovariectomized Or Treated With Antiestrogenclomiphene Citrate, Leyla Canpolat, İbrahi̇m Hani̇fi̇ Özercan, Nurten Bozlak, Cengi̇z Doğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) immunoreactivity in the uterus of mature rats was investigated after long term administration of clomiphene citrate and ovariectomy. In the luminal epithelium and glandular epithelium and endometrial stroma regions, few PCNA-immunoreactive cells were observed. PCNA reactivity was estimated for the luminal and glandular epithelium and for the stromal cells. Treatment of clomiphene citrate decreased the proliferation of the luminal epithelial cell and stromal cells to the same extent as ovariectomy. In both of these groups, the proportion of anti-PCNA positive cells in the glandular epithelium was significantly higher than in the luminal epihelium and stromal …

The Effects Of Insulin On Serum Levels Of Apo A-I Containing Lipoprotein Particles In Syndrome X Patients With Coronary Heart Disease, Meti̇n Yildirimkaya, Cumhur Kilinç, Mustafa Özkan, Kurtuluş Yilmaz, Yavuz Nari̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Syndrome X consists of low serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), raised serum triglyceride, glucose intolerance, increased blood pressure, abdominal obesity and insulin resistance which is associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Apolipoprotein (apo) A-I containing lipoprotein particles, lipoprotein A-I (Lp A-I) and lipoprotein A-I:A-II (Lp A-I:A-II.) may have different metabolic functions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between insulin and apo A-I containing lipoproteins in syndrome X patients with or without CHD. We selected 38 male patients with syndrome X and divided into two groups: The one with CHD (n=21) and the other …

The results were compared for all groups. The results revealed that depressive symptomatology in patients with vitiligo and alopecia areata was higher than in the control group (respectively, 55%, 36%, 15%). …

Accuracy Of Sphygmomanometers, Okay Başak, Şebnem Karazeybek Jan 1999

Accuracy Of Sphygmomanometers, Okay Başak, Şebnem Karazeybek

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

One of the factors affecting the accuracy of readings of blood pressure is the equipment used. Defects or inaccuracy of aneroid sphygmomanometers may be source of error in blood pressure measurement. We inspected 100 sphygmomanometers for physical defects and assessed their accuracy against a standard mercury manometer at four different pressure points. 46 of the 100 sphygmomanometers were determined to be intolerant (deviation from the mercury manometer by greater than±3 mm Hg at two or more of the test points). There were faults in the inflation-deflation system of 34 sphygmomanometers. The most common physical defects were: defective pump bulb, defective …
