Mechanisms Of Gene Transfer Mediated By Lipoplexes Associated With Targeting Ligands Or Ph-Sensitive Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, Pedro Pires, Rogério Gaspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Association of a targeting ligand such as transferrin, or an endosome disrupting peptide such as GALA, with cationic liposome-DNA complexes ('lipoplexes') results in a significant enhancement of transfection of several cell types. Although these strategies can overcome some of the barriers to gene delivery by lipoplexes, the mechanisms by which they actually enhance transfection is not known. In studies designed to establish the targeting specificity of transferrin, we found that apo-transferrin enhances transfection to the same extent as transferrin, indicating that internalization of the lipoplexes is mostly independent of transferrin receptors. These observations were reinforced by results obtained from competitive …

Smile: An Esthetic Point Of View(การยิ้ม : แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความงาม), Rud Sooparb, Issarawan Boonsiri

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Smile is a complicated system to express emotions. It was formed by both skeletal tissue and soft tissue. In the investigations of hard tissue, sella-nasion to mandibular plane (SN-MP) and sellanasion to palatal plane to upper incisal edge are the comprehensive factors. For soft tissue studies, nasolabial fold acts as the keystone of the smiling mechanism. The circumoral muscles play and important roll in 2 stages to raise upper lip first and then lip and fold are raise as well as contracted later. As smile was formed, it represented high, average, and low smile line. Upper lip that touches gingival …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Behçet's disease is a multisystemic inflammatory disease with histological evidence for vasculitis and characterized by mucocutaneous, ocular, articular, vascular, intestinal, pulmonary, renal and neurologic involvement. According to the diagnostic criteria formed by the International Study Group, recurrent oral ulceration is a prerequisite, with two more typical symptoms or signs. It is a disease of young adults with a more severe course in male subjects. Clinicopathologic Study Of Erythema Migrans- A Literature Review(อีริทีมาไมแกรนส์- ลักษณะทางคลินิกและพยาธิวิทยา), Poramate Pitak-Arnnop

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Erythema migrans is a benign condition often shows a predilection for the tongue. The lesions can be found at the buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth, palate, gingiva and lips. The etiopathogenesis remains obscure. There is an association between erythema migrans and a number of systemic diseases, especially psoriasis, Reiter's syndrome, atopy and emotional stress. The clinical picture consists of multifocal, circinate and irregular erythematous patches bordered by a slightly elevated keratotic white line or band. Characteristic for both tongue and extraglossal lesions is the migration, which may wax and wane with the periods of remission. Histologically, the epithelium at …

Various Presentation Styles For Informing Parents About Pediatric Dental Procedures, Tracy Dean Walker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: The treatment of pediatric dental patients can only be as effective as the degree to which the parent consents to treatment. This study was designed to A) determine the most effective method of communicating a dental procedure to the parent of a pediatric patient and B) determine the impact that various presentation methods would have on a parent's willingness to give informed consent.

Methods: A Pulpotomy procedure was explained to each parent by one of the following methods; 1) written, 2) written and model, 3) verbal or 4) verbal and model.

Results: A statistically significant relationship was shown between …

Clinical Debonding Simulation Study Of One Metal And Two Ceramic Brackets, Hyunsup Shim Sep 1999

Clinical Debonding Simulation Study Of One Metal And Two Ceramic Brackets, Hyunsup Shim

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study is to compare two mechanical debonding methods on ceramic brackets (TP MXi and 3M Clarity) and a metal bracket (GAC OmniArch) with four different bonding materials (light-cured, one-step chemical-cured, two-step chemical-cured, and Fuji GIC) in clinical simulation, where the diametral force was applied on the handle of the pliers. The effectiveness of mechanical debonding technique was determined by evaluating the following variables: the amount of force required to debond the bracket, the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the enamel surface, the frequency of unexpected bracket failure, and the prevalence of visible enamel damage. The …

The Effect Of Mandibular First Molar Tip Back On Mandibular Incisor Long-Term Stability, Barton L. Soper Sep 1999

The Effect Of Mandibular First Molar Tip Back On Mandibular Incisor Long-Term Stability, Barton L. Soper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study is to determine if mandibular first molar distal tip back during orthodontic treatment will result in improved long-term alignment of mandibular incisors. Our pre and posttreatment sample consisted of 57 Class I and Class II patients (40 female and 17 male). Incisor irregularity was recorded at T2 and T4 (average of 12.9 years postretention at T4). Molar tipback was evaluated T1 to T2 and T2 to T4. The sample was divided into 3 groups - molars tipped distally 1 degree or more during treatment, molars essentially not tipped, and molars tipped mesially 1 degree or …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Thirty six cases of giant cell fibroma of the oral cavity in Thai patients were clinico-pathologically analyzed. The results showed that giant celll fibroma occurred in all age groups with the predilection for the third decade of life. No significant sex predilection of occurrence was noted. Clinically, the lesions presented as sessile or pedunculated masses with either smooth or papillary surface. Most of the lesions were under 10 mm in diameter. The most common location was the gingiva. Microscopically, the lesion was composed of large stellate-shaped mononuclear and multinuclear cells in a highly vascularized loose connective tissue. From this study, …
