Phenylbutyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Prevention Of Gastric Ulceration, Robert A. Floyd, John M. Carney Jul 1991

Phenylbutyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Prevention Of Gastric Ulceration, Robert A. Floyd, John M. Carney

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions containing PBN, or active derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for administration to a patient, are disclosed for treating or preventing gastric ulceration caused by ingestion of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Based on animal studies, the dosage is in the range of 3 to 300 mg/kg and is administered prior to, simultaneously, or shortly after ingestion of the NSAID compound(s). In the preferred embodiment, the range is between 10 and 30 mg/kg, depending on the dosage unit required to protect the mucosa. The preferred method of administration is orally, alone or in combination with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. It is believed …

3-Hydroxy-N-Methylpyrrolidone And Use As Transdermal Enhancer, George A. Digenis, Walter J. Doll, Amale Hawi Jul 1991

3-Hydroxy-N-Methylpyrrolidone And Use As Transdermal Enhancer, George A. Digenis, Walter J. Doll, Amale Hawi

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The novel compound, 3-hydroxy-N-methylpyrrolidone, is effective as a transdermal enhancer for the absorption of drugs through the skin of humans and animals. The 3-hydroxy-N-methylpyrrolidone is prepared from delta-butyrolactone which is converted to methyl 2,4-dibromobutyrate, this intermediate is reacted with methylamine to form N-methyl-2,4-dibromobutyramide, this intermediate is converted to 3-bromo-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone by ring closure, and the 3-bromo-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is reacted with an alkaline earth metal carbonate or alkaline metal carbonate to form 3-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd Jun 1991

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, which are active during ischemia in preventing ATP depletion of the cells which predisposes them to subsequent injury during reperfusion, and which are active during reperfusion as oxygen radical scavengers, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for systemic or local administration, especially to the CNS, spinal column and eyes. Based on animal studies, the dosage for treating damage due to stroke is in the range of 10 to 300 mg/kg. Similar dosages are useful in treating damage resulting from free radical generation during inflammation, either as a product …

Biodegradable, Low Biological Toxicity Radiographic Contrast Medium And Method Of X-Ray Imaging, Michael J. Jay, Yun Ryo May 1991

Biodegradable, Low Biological Toxicity Radiographic Contrast Medium And Method Of X-Ray Imaging, Michael J. Jay, Yun Ryo

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

A biodegradable, low biological toxicity, particulate radiographic contrast medium comprises biodegradable polymeric spheres of average molecular weight average diameter about 10-1,000 nm or about 0.01-1.0 micron carrying in at least radiographic contrasting amount of a radiographically opaque element.

A method of obtaining a tomographic image of the body portion of a subject comprises administering to the subject a radiographically-detectable amount of the biodegradable, low-toxicity radiographic medium of claim 1; allowing for the spheres to be taken-up by the body portion; and X-raying an area comprising the body portion.

A method of improving the contrast of a tomographic image of a …

Hordenine : Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics And Behavioural Effects In The Horse, M. Frank, T. J. Weckman, T. Wood, W. E. Woods, Chen L. Tai, Shih-Ling Chang, A. Ewing, J. W. Blake, Thomas Tobin

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Hordenine is an alkaloid occurring naturally in grains, sprouting barley, and certain grasses. It is occasionally found in post race urine samples, and therefore we investigated its pharmacological actions in the horse. Hordenine (2.0 mgkg bodyweight [bwt]) was administered by rapid intravenous (iv) injection to 10 horses. Typically, dosed horses showed a tlehmen response and defecated within 60 secs. All horses showed substantial respiratory distress. Respiratory rates increased about 250 per cent and heart rates were approximately double that of resting values. All animals broke out in a sweat shortly after iv injection, but basal body temperature was not affected. …
