Low Toxicity Radiation Sensitizer, Barton L. Bergquist, James C. Chang

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

Bis(5-aminofluorescein)dichloroplatinum(II), and substituted fluoresceinamine derivatives of this compound are disclosed as highly effective radiation sensitizers which enhance the effect of ionizing radiation on tumor cells, but uniquely do so without the usual accompanying high toxicity level to surrounding normal cells. A direct combination, single step reaction synthesis is disclosed for preparing bis(5-aminofluorescein)dichloroplatinum(II) from the reaction between an alkali metal tetrachloroplatinate(II) and 5-aminofluorescein.

T-Cell Growth Factor: Complete Nucleotide Sequence And Organization Of The Gene In Normal And Malignant Cells, Nikki Holbrook, Kendall Smith, Albert Fornace, Claudette Comeau, Robert L. Wiskocil, Gerard R. Crabtree

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using a cloned cDNA copy of T-cell growth factor (TCGF) mRNA from the Jurkat leukemic T-cell line, we have isolated three overlapping TCGF genomic clones from a human DNA library. The entire TCGF gene is contained within two adjacent EcoRI fragments spanning about 8 kilobases. The complete nucleic acid sequence was determined. The gene is divided into four exons. The 5' untranslated region and the first 49 amino acids of the protein, 20 of which constitute a signal polypeptide and are not present in the secreted protein, are encoded by the first exon. Exons 2 and 3, separated from each …

Detection Of Nonrandom Association Of Alleles From The Distribution Of The Number Of Heterozygous Loci In A Sample., R Chakraborty Nov 1984

Detection Of Nonrandom Association Of Alleles From The Distribution Of The Number Of Heterozygous Loci In A Sample., R Chakraborty

Journal Articles

The distribution of the number of heterozygous loci in two randomly chosen gametes or in a random diploid zygote provides information regarding the nonrandom association of alleles among different genetic loci. Two alternative statistics may be employed for detection of nonrandom association of genes of different loci when observations are made on these distributions: observed variance of the number of heterozygous loci (s2k) and a goodness-of-fit criterion (X2) to contrast the observed distribution with that expected under the hypothesis of random association of genes. It is shown, by simulation, that s2k is statistically more efficient than X2 to detect a …

Genetics And Epidemiology Of Gallbladder Disease In New World Native Peoples., K M Weiss, R E Ferrell, C L Hanis, P N Styne Nov 1984

Genetics And Epidemiology Of Gallbladder Disease In New World Native Peoples., K M Weiss, R E Ferrell, C L Hanis, P N Styne

Journal Articles

Native peoples of the New World, including Amerindians and admixed Latin Americans such as Mexican-Americans, are highly susceptible to diseases of the gallbladder. These include cholesterol cholelithiasis (gallstones) and its complications, as well as cancer of the gallbladder. Although there is clearly some necessary dietary or other environmental risk factor involved, the pattern of disease prevalence is geographically associated with the distribution of genes of aboriginal Amerindian origin, and levels of risk generally correspond to the degree of Amerindian admixture. This pattern differs from that generally associated with Westernization, which suggests a gene-environment interaction, and that within an admixed population …

Inhibition Of T Lymphocyte Mitogenesis By 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (Calcitriol)., William F.C. Rigby, Terryl Stacy, Michael W. Fanger Oct 1984

Inhibition Of T Lymphocyte Mitogenesis By 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (Calcitriol)., William F.C. Rigby, Terryl Stacy, Michael W. Fanger

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D may have other important biologic activities in addition to its well-characterized role in the maintenance of calcium homeostasis. Discovery of cytosolic receptors for vitamin D in human peripheral blood monocytes and lectin-stimulated lymphocytes prompted us to study the effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), the most biologically active metabolite of vitamin D, upon phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced lymphocyte blast transformation. We have found that calcitriol is a potent inhibitor of PHA-induced lymphocyte proliferation, achieving 70% inhibition of tritiated thymidine incorporation after 72 h in culture. Furthermore, calcitriol suppressed interleukin-2 (IL-2) production by PHA-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear …
