Polymorphisms, Linkage And Mapping Of Four Enzyme Loci In The Fish Genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae)., D C Morizot, M J Siciliano
Journal Articles
Electrophoretic variants at four additional enzyme loci--two esterases (Est-2, Est-3), retinal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-1) and mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI)--among three species and four subspecies of fish of the genus Xiphophorus were observed. Electrophoretic patterns in F1 hybrid heterozygotes confirmed the monomeric structures of MPI and the esterase and the tetrametric structure of LDH in these fishes. Variant alleles of all four loci displayed normal Mendelian segregation in backcross and F2 hybrids. Recombination data from backcross hybrids mapped with Haldane's mapping function indicate the four loci to be linked as Est-2--0.43--Est3--0.26--LDH-1--0.19--MPI. Significant interference was detected and apparently concentrated in the Est-3 …

Draize: A Blueprint For Change, Henry Spira
Draize Test Campaign
As coordinator, I prepared the following pages for the campaign to abolish the Draize rabbit blinding test. The plan includes background information, short and long range goals and step by step initiatives. This working blueprint was circulated to individuals and organizations interested in supporting the campaign. And we made a point of sharing copies of our plan with the cosmetics industry and any interested observers. It has always been our policy to have an up-front, open agenda.
The Wavelength Dependence Of Herpes Simplex Viral Inactivation & Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation, Richard Detsch
The Wavelength Dependence Of Herpes Simplex Viral Inactivation & Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation, Richard Detsch
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The degrees of Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation (UVR) by mammalian cells of Heroes simplex virus inactivated by different wavelengths of far ultraviolet radiation were measure'. The wavelength dependence of UVR is presented for the wavelength region 238 nm to 297 nm. The shape of the UVR curve suggests that virus directed repair is less dependent on the wavelength of UV radiation than are cellular repair mechanisms. The wavelength dependence of Herpes simplex inactivation by far UV radiation is also presented. The shape of the virus inactivation curve suggests the involvement of both DNA and protein.

Effects Of Two Speeds Of Isokinetic Training On Strength, Power & Muscular Endurance, Kunle Adeyanju
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of two speeds of isokinetic training on muscular strength, power and endurance on college females.
The study involved thirty college females. Twenty of the subjects who served in the experimental groups were randomly assigned to one of two groups: fast speed or slow speed group. This was done after matching based on the pretest strength measure. Ten subjects who served as the control group were from a bowling class This investigation was conducted for seven weeks with a training frequency of three days per week. The experimental treatment was isokinetic …

Results-Oriented Management Though Mbo, Richard Lyders
Library Press and Events
Management by Objectives (MBO) as it has been implemented in the Houston Academy of Medicine--Texas Medical Center Library is described. That MBO must be a total management system and not just another library program is emphasized throughout the discussion and definitions of the MBO system parts: (1) mission statement; (2) role functions; (3) role relationships; (4) effectiveness areas; (5) objective; (6) action plans; and (7) performance review and evaluation. Examples from the library's implementation are given within the discussion of each part to give the reader a clearer picture of the library's actual experiences with the MBO process. Tables are …
Attraction Increases And Decreases As A Function Of Emotion-Attribution And Appropriate Social Cues, Richard A. Dienstbier
Attraction Increases And Decreases As A Function Of Emotion-Attribution And Appropriate Social Cues, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
To study the impact of startle-induced arousal on attraction, blindfolded subjects in a “vestibular function” study were startled by a loud noise accompanying the sudden backward tilt of the dental chair in which they were seated. In Study I startled male subjects indicated (on a “postexperimental” questionnaire) greater attraction toward a pretty female experimenter than did control subjects. Study II demonstrated the reverse, with startled male subjects disliking a male experimenter more than controls. In Study III, female subjects startled by a male experimenter indicated greater attraction than controls, although the pattern of their responses differed from males. While an …

A Scale For Assessing The Severity Of Diseases And Adverse Drug Reactions: Application To Drug Benefit And Risk, Ronald J. Tallarida, Rodney B. Murray, Carl Eiben
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
Physicians were interviewed to assess their willingness to risk adverse drug reactions among patients. These untoward reactions were ranked according to severity and weighted against the primary illness being treated. A specially designed questionnaire in the form of a matrix was used. Severity was divided into seven classes denoted by progressively increasing numerical scores, W1 to W7, whose values could be calculated from analysis of the completed questionnaires. The questionnaires presented several cases, in each of which an illness of specified severity was to be treated with a drug whose untoward reactions differ in severity from that …

A Comparison Of Traditional Grass-Twist Backstops To One Of Corrugated Cardboard Design Use On Indoor Ranges, Charles T. Crume Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study presents the results of a comparison of traditional grass-twist backstops frequently used on indoor ranges with one of corrugated cardboard design. The findings indicate that the corrugated cardboard design is substantially superior.
The four factors selected for testing were:
- Arrow pass-through levels and subsequent arrow repair costs
- Arrow penetration levels, tested over several distances and using several bow weights
- Arrow-stopping potential with beginning and inexperienced archers
- Storage
Testing showed the first three factors supporting the corrugated cardboard design. The last factor, storage, was found to be about equally supportive of both designs.
Several recommendations are made. These recommendations …
Classification Of Support Staff In A Consortium Medical Library: A Case Study, Sally Pollak, Richard A. Lyders
Classification Of Support Staff In A Consortium Medical Library: A Case Study, Sally Pollak, Richard A. Lyders
Library Press and Events
A representative committee of Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library staff and faculty, under the direction of the library administration, successfully redesigned a job classification system for the library's nonprofessional staff. In the new system all nonprofessionals are assigned to one of five grade levels, each with a corresponding salary range. To determine its appropriate grade level each job is analyzed and assigned a numerical value using a point system based on a set of five factors, each of which is assigned a relative number of points. The factors used to measure jobs are: education and experience, complexity of …

In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli., Randolph H. Scott, George T. Sperl, John A. Demoss
Journal Articles
When Escherichia coli was grown in the presence of tungstate, inactive forms of two molybdoenzymes, nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase, accumulated and were converted to their active forms upon incubation of cell suspensions with molybdate and chloramphenicol. The conversion to the active enzymes did not occur in cell extracts. When incubated with [(99)Mo]molybdate and chloramphenicol, the tungstate-grown cells incorporated (99)Mo into protein components which were released from membranes by procedures used to release nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase and which migrated with these activities on polyacrylamide gels. Although neither activity was formed during incubation of the crude extract with molybdate, …
