Implementation And Evaluation Of An Oral Hygiene Program In Long-Term Care, Lawrence P. Lemos
Implementation And Evaluation Of An Oral Hygiene Program In Long-Term Care, Lawrence P. Lemos
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
A review of the literature focusing on oral care within long-term care (LTC) suggests positive resident care outcomes occur when standardized practices are employed. Studies of staff education programs, trained oral hygiene aides, and dental hygienists working within LTC, have linked regular oral hygiene practices to decreased pneumonia rates. While these studies make the connection between good oral hygiene and reducing risk for pneumonia, best practices focused on implementing and sustaining an oral hygiene program in LTC facilities are lacking. The aim of this quality improvement project was to ensure that dependent residents in LTC receive assistance with daily oral …
Investigating Barriers To Access And Delivery Of Palliative Care For Persons With Dementia In London, Ontario, Emily M. Hill
Investigating Barriers To Access And Delivery Of Palliative Care For Persons With Dementia In London, Ontario, Emily M. Hill
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Dementia is a syndrome that is progressive, degenerative and terminal. The palliative care philosophy aims to maximize quality of life for the dying individual and has been recognized in the literature as being both beneficial and under-used in persons dying with dementia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of staff delivering palliative care to individuals with dementia to determine how care was delivered, to learn which assessment tools were used, and whether policies were affected the delivery of palliative care. Twenty-two staff participants were interviewed. Data were interpreted using phenomenological methodology. Findings yielded three themes: confusion, …
Re-Cognizing Power In The Culture Of Dementia Care Knowledge, Ryan T. Deforge
Re-Cognizing Power In The Culture Of Dementia Care Knowledge, Ryan T. Deforge
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In light of increasing system demands, system regulations, and constrained resources, those living and working with dementia in the long-term care sector are vulnerable to oppressive care practices. This is true so long as our understanding of how social power affects the ways in which dementia care knowledge is created, shared, and enacted remains limited. Based on prolonged field observations and on informal and formal interviews with care recipients, family members, and staff, the aim of this critical qualitative research was to examine the culture of dementia care knowledge in two sites: a specialized dementia care unit in a long-term …
A New Approach To An Old Problem: Defining Nursing’S Role In Successful Transitions To Long-Term Residential Care, Kyleen Aldrich
A New Approach To An Old Problem: Defining Nursing’S Role In Successful Transitions To Long-Term Residential Care, Kyleen Aldrich
Honors College Theses
A growing body of nursing research addresses the transitional period for older adults entering long-term residential care. However, gaps exist in our understanding of nursing’s role in the transition process. Our aim is to examine the available evidence and develop a model of nursing strategies and interventions to ease the transition to long-term care. This model describes interventions that nurses can incorporate into everyday practice.
A literature review was conducted to examine the transitional care needs and interventions for older adults with a goal of developing a model addressing transitions to long-term care.
Most nursing studies provided descriptive information about …
The Relationship Of Financial Performance, Quality Indicators, And The Role Of Nurse Executives In Virginia Nursing Homes, Jeany V. Murphy
The Relationship Of Financial Performance, Quality Indicators, And The Role Of Nurse Executives In Virginia Nursing Homes, Jeany V. Murphy
Health Services Research Dissertations
Problem statement. The dynamic nature of the healthcare industry has triggered changes in nurse executive functions. The job has expanded into entrepreneurial roles to be able to provide the most cost effective services while maintaining good quality outcomes for the residents. The new responsibility requires a different set of knowledge and competencies that is usually achieved through advanced education. It is not known whether nurse executives in long term care in Virginia possess the skills to influence both the financial and quality outcomes of the facility.
Methods. This descriptive research study examined the relationship of the nurse executives' technical, human, …

Llmhs Elderly Services Outreach Program: Lincoln, Lyon & Murray Human Services, Jamie Olson
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Right now there is a lack of professional and community knowledge regarding the services LLMHS provides to those over age 65. Thus, there are elderly who are in need of help who are not getting connected to a county long term care social worker. The elderly may need help to simply get connected to resources, have questions answered, correct misconceptions about long term care, get recommendations, or assistance paying for home and community based services. There are also many providers and professionals with questions about what LLMHS does and does not do as well as what the assistance programs can …
Nursing Home Ownership And Public Policy: An Historical Analysis, K. R. Kaffenberger
Nursing Home Ownership And Public Policy: An Historical Analysis, K. R. Kaffenberger
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
In the early days of the United States, care of the disabled elderly outside the home meant the public almshouse. By the 1920s, private, nonprofit homes for the aged were prevalent. More recently, private, for-profit facilities have grown to dominate the field.
For-profit ownership has been controversial. Underlying the controversy is the concern that quality might be lowered in order to enhance profit.
This study asks why most nursing homes are privately owned and why most privately owned nursing homes are operated for profit. It does so with reference to The Nonprofit Economy, in which Burton Weisbrod describes a …
The Meaning Of Quality In Living Service Environments: An Analysis Of The Experiences Of People With Disabilities, Elderly People And Service Workers, Ruth Marquis
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of the study was to examine the experiences of both people with disabilities and elderly people and to identify their perceptions of quality as it relates to living in a service or being supported by a service to live in the community. The study was naturalistic in design and used a phenomenological approach and inductive analysis. It involved immersion in living services for a two year period, in-depth interviews with people living and working in services and participant observation. Fifty service users between the ages of twenty-one and ninety-six, and twenty-six service workers between the ages of twenty-six …
