Comparisons Of Eating Disorder Presentation, Research Participation, And Treatment Utilization Between Racial And Ethnic Groups Of College Women With Eating Disorders, Grace Monterubio
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The inclusion of racial and ethnic minority individuals in research is imperative in furthering generalizable and comprehensive research on eating disorder (ED) populations and improving the disparities for minorities with EDs. The current study investigates such disparities by 1) assessing the presentation of EDs and comorbidities across racial and ethnic groups, as well as 2) assessing whether minority individuals are less likely to participate in a research study, or utilize the offered interventions versus their majority counterparts in the Healthy Body Image Program (HBI), a study of an online, guided self-help, ED intervention vs. referral to in-person care among college …

Identifying And Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Colorectal Cancer, Amber Harnett
Identifying And Targeting Cancer Stem Cells In Colorectal Cancer, Amber Harnett
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The cancer stem cell hypothesis posits that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are the driving force behind tumour progression and metastasis, making them ideal therapeutic targets. Previous research identified Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (Lgr5) as a marker of CSCs in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it is not known whether more than one CSC population exists in CRC. Identifying and targeting CSCs in CRC is important for effective treatment of cancer patients. Here, I show that Keratin-19 (K19) labels intestinal CSCs in mouse tumours that recapitulate the early stages of CRC. Moreover, selective ablation of Lgr5 has no effect on tumour …

Effect Of Strong Electrolyte Containing Gelling Aids On The Sol-Gel Transition Temperature Of Hypromellose 2910, Elnaz Sadeghi
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Hypromellose, or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) - has been widely used for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications due to its advantages, including that it is modifiable in terms of viscosity, and it has the ability to form thermally reversible hydrogels. The thermal gelation temperature (TGel) of a given HPMC solution strongly depends on its characteristic grade and the solution concentration. Applying certain additives can modify the TGel even further; depending on their nature and concentration. With the addition of said additives, a lower or higher TGel can be obtained. For example, the addition of sodium chloride (NaCl) reduces …
The Effects Of Inhibiting Pi3k On Tumor Suppressor Gene P53 And Cell Proliferation, Kelsi Peters
The Effects Of Inhibiting Pi3k On Tumor Suppressor Gene P53 And Cell Proliferation, Kelsi Peters
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
When the cell surface molecule, Human EGF Receptor (HER2), is overexpressed, the cell can become cancerous. MDA-MB-453 is an established breast cancer cell line made cancerous by HER2 overexpression. This mutation that causes HER2 overexpression affects the cell signaling pathway of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt, MDM2, and p53. We predicted that PI3K would be inhibited with the compound, LY294002, sending signals for Akt and MDM2 to be deactivated in MDA-MB-453 cells. Deactivated MDM2 signals for p53 to be activated. P53 is a tumor suppressor protein that exists in low quantities in normal cells, but when damage …

Nursing ETDs
Military sexual trauma (MST) is a significant problem in U.S. military service branches, service academies, and National Guard units, with both immediate and longer term traumatic effects on survivors who are disproportionately female. MST includes sexual harassment or assault during military service and the ensuing consequences for physical health and psychosocial well-being of service members and veterans. The Department of Defense is committed to reducing the incidence of sexual assault and harassment among service members, encouraging victims to report, and mitigating the impact of MST. However, the estimated prevalence of sexual assault among active duty service members remains unacceptably high, …

Hypochondria, which is now broadly known as health anxiety, is the fear of a serious illness that continues despite evidence to the contrary from laboratory tests and the reassurance of physicians. In the past people with this disorder would go from doctor to doctor seeking an answer, but now many people rely solely upon online information.
For people with health anxiety, the Internet provides a lot of fodder. Researchers have recently coined the term "cyberchondria" to describe the phenomenon of increased health anxiety due to online health searches.

Women Are Being Cut During Childbirth Without Need Or Consent, Molly Cora Enking
Capstones
An episiotomy, a surgical cut used to enlarge the vaginal opening during childbirth, can be extremely painful, hard to recover from and can increase the risk of severe complications. In 2018, episiotomies are rarely necessary, but at some U.S. hospitals they happen much more than they should. And in the course reporting this story, New York City News Service found that it is common for doctors to cut women without the mother’s consent.

The Effectiveness Of Bispectral Index Monitoring On Intraoperative Awareness In Adult Surgical Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia, Eugene D. Lee
The Effectiveness Of Bispectral Index Monitoring On Intraoperative Awareness In Adult Surgical Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia, Eugene D. Lee
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
Intraoperative awareness (IA), or the unexpected and explicit recall by patients of events that occurred intraoperatively, is a rare but serious event. Incidences of IA have been associated with extreme anxiety, physiologic stress, and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder. Anesthesia has debated the efficacy of brain monitoring devices, such as the Bispectral (BIS) index monitor, to reduce the incidence of IA. By analyzing EEG waves, these monitors can be used to alert the anesthesia provider when the patient may not be sufficiently anesthetized. An integrative review was conducted to evaluate the current evidence on the use of BIS monitoring …

Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson
Neural And Behavioral Associations Of Drinking And Empathic Processing, Charles Samuel Henry Robinson
Psychology ETDs
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a major health problem, yet most individuals with AUD do not perceive a need for formal treatment and do not receive treatment. The lack of treatment seeking among individuals with AUD may suggest a lack of self-awareness and insight into the seriousness of AUD related problems. Moreover, individuals who have lost or are at risk of losing major relationships are especially likely to perceive the need for help. Thus, it may be the case that awareness of the influence of one’s drinking on social relationships and the feelings of others (i.e., empathy) could improve treatment …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
The 21st century has seen a dramatic acceleration in the evolution of bacterial resistance. Many classes of commercial antibiotics, including most current commercial β-lactams, were structurally optimized to counter 20th century pathogens. The carbapenems represent the most potent and broadest spectrum of the β-lactams, representing crucial last line agents to treat lifethreatening infections. While the 21st century has seen the appearance of carbapenem-resistant strains, the basic substitution pattern of commercial carbapenem antibiotics has remained constant, other than minor modifications at the C2 position. This research will investigate whether substitution at an atypical carbapenem position, the C5 position, can improve the …

Use Of Telemedicine To Improve Cpap Non-Adherence In Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea, A Pilot Study, Kristin L. Hanger
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
Abstract
The aim of this project is to improve continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) non-adherence in patients newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by recurrent collapse of the upper airway during sleep. Untreated, OSA is associated with co-morbidity and decreased quality of life. The standard for OSA treatment is CPAP. Adherence to CPAP is not optimal. Applying telemedicine technology to monitor adherence of CPAP treatment, allows for early intervention. Prior research has shown mixed results with use of telemedicine on non-adherence rates.
This is a pilot study using telemedicine to monitor adherence data to …

The author implemented a translational project to develop and evaluate a video-based diabetes health education intervention …
An Analysis Of Interprofessional Rounds Effect On Readmission Rates And Patient Satisfaction, Cynthia Atkinson
An Analysis Of Interprofessional Rounds Effect On Readmission Rates And Patient Satisfaction, Cynthia Atkinson
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
Evidence supports an interprofessional approach to patient care reduces readmissions, mortality, costs, and length of stay while simultaneously increasing communication, collaboration, and satisfaction of care providers and patients (Vazirani, S., et al, 2005). The health care team in an acute care setting, especially direct patient care providers such as nurses and ancillary disciplines must assess the discharge needs of patients from admission to the hospital until discharge disposition (Zakzesky, Klink, McAndrew, Schroeter, & Johnson, 2015). The purpose of this study was to determine if interprofessional rounds improved patient satisfaction and reduced readmission rates. The interprofessional team consisted of the hospitalists, …
Cocoa, Postprandial Lipoproteins, And Inflammation In Type 2 Diabetes: A Secondary Data Analysis, Rickelle Tallent
Cocoa, Postprandial Lipoproteins, And Inflammation In Type 2 Diabetes: A Secondary Data Analysis, Rickelle Tallent
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is associated with dyslipidemia and chronic low-grade inflammation, which greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in this population. Hyperlipidemia and inflammation in the postprandial state substantially contribute to atherosclerosis development and CVD risk, and have shown to be exacerbated by high-fat meals. Dietary cocoa is a rich source of flavanols that is associated with favorable effects on cardiovascular health, such as improvements in the lipid profile and chronic inflammation, in non-diabetic adults.
Objective: To conduct a secondary data analysis using unpublished data from a previously conducted clinical study to determine whether acute cocoa …
Sequence Analysis Methods For The Design Of Cancer Vaccines That Target Tumor-Specific Mutant Antigens (Neoantigens), Jasreet Hundal
Sequence Analysis Methods For The Design Of Cancer Vaccines That Target Tumor-Specific Mutant Antigens (Neoantigens), Jasreet Hundal
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The human adaptive immune system is programmed to distinguish between self and non-self proteins and if trained to recognize markers unique to a cancer, it may be possible to stimulate the selective destruction of cancer cells. Therapeutic cancer vaccines aim to boost the immune system by selectively increasing the population of T cells specifically targeted to the tumor-unique antigens, thereby initiating cancer cell death.. In the past, this approach has primarily focused on targeted selection of ‘shared’ tumor antigens, found across many patients. The advent of massively parallel sequencing and specialized analytical approaches has enabled more efficient characterization of tumor-specific …
