The Extent And Impact Of The Incorporation Of Employee Health Promotion Programs In The Central Florida Business Community, Thomas Berlin Jan 1990

The Extent And Impact Of The Incorporation Of Employee Health Promotion Programs In The Central Florida Business Community, Thomas Berlin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Employee health insurance premiums continue to rise exponentially despite stagnant inflation rates. The national trend in recent years has been to decrease benefit usage by attempting to establish a healthier workforce. The incorporation of employee health promotion programs either within, or outside of the worksite, is the favored means of providing a solution. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of employee health promotion program usage in Central Florida, and the economic impact, if any, of these programs. The basic research questions for this study are:

1. What percentage of the corporations surveyed have instituted employee health …

Utilization Of Ambulatory Services By The Health Maintenance Organization Of Florida, Thomas Harold Hansen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of ambulatory services by the health maintenance organization of Florida (HMO), independent practice association (IPA) model, was compared to a fee-for-service population. Each randomly selected group consisted of 250 patients being cared for by the same providers, at the same clinic, during the calendar year 1986. Demographic and clinical data was gathered from the office charts. Frequencies were evaluated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and t-tests were run to substantiate variance at the 0.05 level of confidence. The HMO group is a younger population (t = 0.017), and the males are responsible for the increased …

Effect Of Visual Reminder On The Ttr And Mlu-W Of Oral Hearing-Impaired Students During High/Scope Recall Sessions, Joan S. Kissel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Language samples of sixteen oral hearing-impaired students, aged 3.8 to 10.6 years with a mean SRT average of 27dB, were taken during High/Scope recall sessions under two conditions: with visual reminder (a videotape replay of their session work-time) or without visual reminder (no videotape replay of their work-time). These language samples, taken over a three month period, were analyzed with SALT (Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts) for flexibility (using TTR) and structure (using MLU-W), and for five other SALT analyses. In each of the seven SALT analyses, improvement was shown for both groups with a trend for greater improvement shown …

Criteria For Referral Of Pre-School Children By Pediatricians And Family Practice Physicians To Audiologists And Otolaryngologists, Janet Celia James

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pediatricians and family practice physicians were using standard criteria referring pre-school children to otolaryngologists and/or audiologists. Data was collected regarding the types of instruments and procedures used in the referral, in addition to the etiologies most frequently referred. Comparisons of referral criteria were made between pediatricians and family practice physicians.

A 17-item questionnaire regarding audiological tests, procedures and pathologies was sent to 108 pediatricians and 112 familiar practice physicians in the Central Florida area. Similarities in tests and procedures used by the two groups of physicians were limited to the use …

Development Of A Prototype Auditory Training Computer Program For Hearing Impaired Preschoolers, Leslie R. Doster Jan 1987

Development Of A Prototype Auditory Training Computer Program For Hearing Impaired Preschoolers, Leslie R. Doster

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer program which pairs auditory stimuli with visual stimuli was developed for the purpose of providing auditory training for the hearing impaired. It utilizes a Texas Instruments 99 /4A computer and Extended BASIC programming language which allows considerable graphics and sound capability. The lessons make full use of the sixteen colors available and the sound is provided three ways: Texas Instruments speech synthesizer, the computer itself (musical tones and noise), and by tape recorder which is controlled by the computer.

Focus of the lessons, which are designed for children ages three to five, is awareness of sound, environmental sounds, …

Comparison Of Performance Of Adolescent Hearing And Hearing-Impaired Children On Metalinguistic Tasks, Julia W. Reynolds Jan 1987

Comparison Of Performance Of Adolescent Hearing And Hearing-Impaired Children On Metalinguistic Tasks, Julia W. Reynolds

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Various researchers have viewed metalinguistics as the ability to consciously reflect upon language (Van Kleeck 1984a; Franklin 1979; Cazden 1975; Dale 1976). Prior to schooling, children use language as a means of functional communication through developing an interaction with the environment. They are aware of the content of their messages but not the language they are using to communicate their ideas. The emergence of language is developed primarily through concrete operations according to Van Kleeck (1984a). However, Allan (1982) states that when children enter school and begin to read, metalinguistics is emphasized and the language evolves from an unconscious, experimental …

Influence Of Stellate Ganglion Stimulation On Morphology Of Alveolar Type Ii Cells, Lori Ann Alexander Jan 1987

Influence Of Stellate Ganglion Stimulation On Morphology Of Alveolar Type Ii Cells, Lori Ann Alexander

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research provides ultrastructural information regarding pulmonary surfactant secretion from stimulation of adrenergic pathways to the lung via the stellate ganglion. This information will help clarify the important role of the sympathetic nervous system in surfactant disorders. It also provides insight into sympathetic mechanisms causing surfactant derangement in adult and infant respiratory distress syndromes (RDS). Basic cellular mechanisms of surfactant metabolism, including synthesis and packaging in lamellar bodies, were studied. Results shed light on these basic processes of lung cell function.

The results of this study provide new avenues for studying a problem in health care that has long resisted …

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez Jan 1985

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory and feral lineages of mice were subjected to cephalad (+GZ) accelerations, for 1.8 seconds, aboard a solid fuel rocket. Spectrophotometric analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage retrieved post launch revealed significant (p < .001) elevations of protein in the lungs of experimental mice. Sudden transient imposition of a mean +GZ acceleration of 6.22 ± .47 (SD) G, at lift-off, may have induced hypervolemia of basilar pulmonary microvasculature with concomitant migration of fluid and protein from intravascular to juxta-alveolar perivascular compartments. Exudates may have entered bronchiolar airways subsequently gravitating toward alveoli.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an especially designed small-stepped treatment program utilizing the Apple II microcomputer on the graphic output of eight chronically aphasic adults. The subjects manifested moderate/ severe to severe communicative impairment as determined by performance on the Aphasic Language Performance Scales (ALPS) (Keenan and Brassell, 1974) and were receiving management at the Communicative disorders Clinic at the University of Central Florida. Pretreatment status of each subject was measured via a visual and hearing screening. In addition, the Aphasia Language Performance Scales were administered as an indicant of overall communicative ability. Spelling …
