Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the publication rate of free paper abstracts presented by the postgraduate (PG) trainees and determine the reasons for non-publication. A mixed methods study was conducted. PG trainees presenting free papers at the at the Pakistan Society of Chemical Pathologist conferences from 2012 to 2018 were included. Three databases were searched to identify if the abstracts were published or not. The PG trainee authors of abstracts not published as full manuscript, were surveyed to determine the barriers and challenges in publishing a manuscript.
Results: The average rate of full manuscript publication was 51.8% (n = …

Abstract To Publication Conversion In Pediatric Critical Care Medicine In Pakistan, Anwarul Haque, Mohammad Shahzad, Humaira Jurair, Naveed Ur Rehman Siddiqui, Sidra Ishaque, Qalab Abbas
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: To determine the rate of conversion of abstracts presented at conferences into full-text articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of pediatric critical care medicine (PCCM) in a developing country.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed PCCM abstracts from Pakistan presented at national and international pediatric and critical care conferences over 10 years (January 2010 to March 2020). Data included abstract characteristics, such as presentation (poster/oral), presenter (fellow/resident), time of meeting (month and year), type of meeting, study design and topic; and publication characteristics, such as journal name, time (month and year) and first author. The primary outcome was publication …
Publication Status Of Unpublished Research Manuscripts On Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applications After 30 Months, J. T. Barnes
Publication Status Of Unpublished Research Manuscripts On Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applications After 30 Months, J. T. Barnes
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Objectives: The orthopaedic surgery residency applicant class of 2016 had a nationwide match rate of 67.8%. This institution received 573 applications for four residency spots. As orthopaedic surgery residency becomes more competitive, so does the drive among applicants to improve their residency applications. Research experience, in particular, is becoming an increasingly common component of applications. Previous research has demonstrated that the requirement for a PubMed Identification number on all published citations on residency applications since 2014 has led to a drastic decrease in misrepresentation of published research. While publication is the ultimate goal of most research projects, not all manuscripts …

Selecting A Journal For Your Manuscript: A 4-Step Process, Claire Olivia Sharifi, Robin Buccheri
Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship
Background Identifying the most appropriate journal for a manuscript can be challenging for both experienced and novice nurse authors. Several factors should be considered when selecting a journal (e.g., peer-reviewed, target audience, type of manuscripts accepted, type of copyright and publishing model used). Selecting the most appropriate journal can save time for both authors and publishers.
Purpose The purpose of this article is to provide nurses, particularly those new to scholarly publishing, with clear, plain language guidance on the processes and considerations involved in selecting a journal for publication.
Methods A librarian and a nurse educator collaborated to develop an …

Implementation Of Continuous Quality Improvement In Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care In Australia: A Scoping Systematic Review, Karen Gardner, Beverly Sibthorpe, Mier Chan, Ginny Sargent, Michelle Dowden, Daniel Mcaullay
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
BACKGROUND: Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs have been taken up widely by Indigenous primary health care (PHC) services in Australia and there has been national policy commitment to support this. However, international evidence shows that implementing CQI is challenging, impacts are variable and little is known about the factors that impede or enhance effectiveness. A scoping review was undertaken to explore uptake and implementation in Indigenous PHC, including barriers and enablers to embedding CQI in routine practice. We provide guidance on how research and evaluation might be intensified to support implementation.
METHODS: Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL and the …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Publishing a manuscript in an academic journal represents more than just 'promotional currency.' It provides the opportunity to provoke debate, share your experiences, and challenge the status quo on provider practices. Writing a manuscript relies on collaboration and shared responsibility from a research team, which can often challenge mentors as they supervise and guide its development. While there are numerous online resources and peer-reviewed journal articles on 'How to write a scientific article,' we aim to tackle an even larger and overarching theme that transcends specific journal categories, writing styles, and citation formatting. In order to guide new researchers in …

Educating Students To Play The Publication Game, Kathryn M. Weston
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The rise and rise of predatory publishers (Beall, 2016) suggests the unwary in the research world are still being conned. Yet, for emerging researchers, this rogue behaviour is only one of the threats encountered when playing the 'publication game'

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Mass Media Coverage Of Genomics Medicine In China: A Call For Science Journalism In The Developing World, Feifei Zhao, Yan Chen, Siqi Ge, Xinwei Yu, Shuang Shao, Michael Black, Youxin Wang, Jie Zhang, Manshu Song, Wei Wang
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Science journalism is a previously neglected but rapidly growing area of scholarship in postgenomics medicine and socio-technical studies of knowledge-based innovations. Science journalism can help evaluate the quantity and quality of information flux between traditional scientific expert communities and the broader public, for example, in personalized medicine education. Newspapers can play a crucial role in science and health communication, and more importantly, in framing public engagement. However, research on the role of newspaper coverage of genomics-related articles has not been readily available in resource-limited settings. As genomics is rapidly expanding worldwide, this gap in newspaper reportage in China is therefore …

Publication Bias, The File Drawer Problem, And How Innovative Publication Models Can Help, D Apthorp
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
One of the topics that has come up frequently in the discussions on open science has been the "filedrawer problem", otherwise known as publication bias (Rosenthal, 1979 Psychological Bulletin 86(3), 638-641). Traditional publishing practices have tended to favour positive results that reject the null hypothesis, leading some researchers to suggest that, in the extreme case, "most published results are false" (Ioannidis, 2005 PLoS Medicine 2(8), e124). What does this mean for vision science, and how can an open science framework help address this problem? I will suggest that innovative publishing initiatives such as PsychFileDrawer.org and the Reproducibility Project can harness …
