A Critical Hermeneutic Analysis Of Presence In Nursing Practice, Alicia L. Bright
A Critical Hermeneutic Analysis Of Presence In Nursing Practice, Alicia L. Bright
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Nursing presence, although it involves action at times, is a humanitarian quality of relating to a patient that is known to have powerful and positive implications for both nurse and patient. However, this phenomenon has not been well understood. Three theories, drawn from the work of Paul Ricoeur and Hans-Georg Gadamer, served as the boundaries for both data collection and analysis. The theories were narrative identity, play and solicitude. This study follows a critical hermeneutic approach to field research and data analysis. Literature regarding nursing presence is reviewed and discussed, and in-depth conversations with eleven participants are recorded. Examining the …

Background: To address the shortage of PhD-prepared nursing faculty, universities in the United States of America offer direct entry BSN-to-PhD nursing programs. Little research has been done to explore students’ perceptions of these programs and formally evaluate the successes and opportunities for growth of this academic track. Methods: Focusing on the perceptions and experiential reflection of BSN-to-PhD education, a survey with open-ended questions was distributed among voluntary participants who are current BSN-to-PhD students or recent graduates (years) from various universities in the country. Textual data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach with thematic analysis. Results: This article elaborates on …

Interprofessional Collaboration And Interprofessional Education, Marcia R. Gardner Ph.D., Rn, Cpnp, Cpn
Faculty Works: NUR (2010-2023)
The recent re-affirmation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by the U.S. Supreme Court reassures many of us that we are moving in the direction of better access to health care in the U.S. Whether there is adequate access to the highest quality and safest health care is a different question. What else is needed to grow and solidify quality and safety in health care? The U.S. Institute of Medicine,1,2 emphasized the need for more, and more effective, interprofessional collaboration to achieve improved healthcare quality and safety standards. According to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) expert panel, representing nursing, medicine, …

Aim: The aim of this study was to report a study protocol that examines feasibility, preliminary efficacy and satisfaction of a text message intervention on the outcome of medication adherence in adult patients prescribed oral anti-cancer agents.
Background: Administration of oral anti-cancer agents occurs in the home setting, requiring patients to self-manage the regimen as prescribed. However, many barriers to medication adherence exist: regimens are often complex, with cycling of two or more medications; side effects of treatment; most cancer patients are older with comorbid conditions and competing demands; and cognitive decline and forgetfulness may occur. Research indicates patients miss …

To address commonly cited organizational and personal outcomes in the nursing industry, it is important to identify factors that may mitigate the relationship between workplace stressors and strains such as turnover intentions, job satisfaction, burnout, and injuries. The purpose of the current study is to explore the role of trait resilience on the emotion-centered model of job stress in a sample of U.S. nurses. The study uses a multiwave design to examine the mitigating role of trait resilience on work strains in nurses. In a sample of 185 nurses and 97 multiwave pairs, resilience was found to be significantly related …
Cultural Humility: A Lifelong Process For Professional Nurses, Jenny Adelstein
Cultural Humility: A Lifelong Process For Professional Nurses, Jenny Adelstein
Senior Honors Projects
Cultural humility is necessary for all nurses in order to provide the best quality patient care. It is a life-long process of self-reflection and self-critique, which allows nurses to examine differences and similarities between their own beliefs, values, and health care goals with those of their patients (Schuessler et al., 2012). Cultural humility helps nurses to recognize potential differences in the meaning of health and wellness among their patients, and to begin to understand the many challenges to accessing quality health care. Cultural immersion programs is one educational strategy to allow nursing students to develop cultural humility through acquiring critical …
Impact Of Prior Healthcare Experience On Self-Reported Confidence And Competency Among Third Year Clinical Nursing Students, Conrad N. Bukoski, Jennifer Fuvich
Impact Of Prior Healthcare Experience On Self-Reported Confidence And Competency Among Third Year Clinical Nursing Students, Conrad N. Bukoski, Jennifer Fuvich
Senior Honors Projects
There is a long-running debate amongst nurse educators if prior healthcare experience facilitates or encumbers a nursing student’s clinical training and education. Nursing students with prior healthcare experience have often worked as home health aids (HHAs), certified nursing assistants (CNAs), patient care technicians (PCTs), emergency medical technicians (EMTs), electrocardiogram technicians (EKG tech), student nurse associates (SNAs), and paramedics. The psychomotor and cognitive nursing skills utilized in these healthcare positions vary and some overlap with nursing skills. All of these positions interact with other healthcare positions to deliver patient care.
Some educators feel that inadequate skills and training may be acquired …
The Cost Of Caring: Compassion Fatigue In Hospice Nursing, Stephanie O'Neil
The Cost Of Caring: Compassion Fatigue In Hospice Nursing, Stephanie O'Neil
Senior Honors Projects
Compassion fatigue is a concept that is often referred to as the “cost of caring.” Hospice nurses, who regularly care for patients at the end of life, are most susceptible to this sense of helplessness, isolation, and confusion, as each day they are faced with bearing witness to the tragic loss of their patients. Compassion fatigue has detrimental effects on the health and wellbeing of nurses, and impacts on the safety and dignity preservation of patients. The purpose of this project was to explore the concept of compassion fatigue in Hospice nursing practice. Kim and Schwartz-Barcott’s Hybrid Model is a …

The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) fully supports timely and complete immunization of all infants, children, adolescents, and adults to maximize the health and well-being of all people. Routine childhood immunizations prevent approximately 2.5 million deaths every year (World Health Organization, 2012). Maintaining the highest immunization rates possible is essential to prevent outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases across the nation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). The CDC recommends that all children, adolescents, and adults be immunized to protect children who are most vulnerable to serious illness and death (CDC, 2014). In concert with the American …

OVERVIEW: In 2014, the authors published the results of a study investigating nurses' use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the care of a live simulated patient requiring contact and airborne precautions. The 24 participants were video-recorded as they donned and doffed PPE. Variations in practices that had the potential to cause contamination were noted. In this article, the authors comment on those variations, analyzing each element of proper PPE protocols and examining why the behaviors are a safety concern for the nurse and a potential risk for disease transmission in the hospital or other clinical area. The authors note …

Are you making a difference? Christian values and caring are at the heart of nursing practice. However, it seems there is little talk about caring values with nursing students, even though nurse educators can share these important messages with their students. Demonstrating compassion and caring in an environment of mutual respect can truly make a difference to future nurses.

Nurses' Perceptions Of Barriers To Pediatric Patient Advocacy In End-Of-Life Care, Layla J. Eaton
Honors College
Nurses responsible for caring for pediatric patients during end-of-life care find themselves in any number of ethical dilemmas as they attempt to balance providing care, educating family and patients spanning a large developmental spectrum, working collaboratively with extensive medical teams, ensuring proper therapy and bereavement services for parents and siblings, as well as advocating for the voices of their patients who do not yet have legal authority to make decisions regarding their care. These issues are multifaceted and require considerations from multiple disciplines if proper assessment of potential barriers to patient advocacy is desired. This thesis explored the barriers perceived …

Abstract Related to Algorithm:
Description/Background
Improving pain management is a priority for all healthcare providers, yet the process for how pain is assessed, reported and resolved often lacks a defined process. This lack of structure can lead to delays in pain control for patients and frustrations within healthcare teams. In an effort to facilitate patient-centered care, an interdisciplinary workgroup was constructed to address this process.
Action
In order to eliminate delays and define a process for pain management, an interdisciplinary workgroup utilized performance improvement processes to develop a communication algorithm. The group membership included nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing …
