Finding My Path: Transitioning From Clinician To Professor, Jordan Tinsley

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This manuscript is a reflection on the author’s transition from practicing as a clinical speech-language pathologist (SLP) to entering the academic arena as a clinical assistant professor. The author considers various steps that may be supportive of the transition from clinical practice to academia for SLPs without a research degree (i.e., Ph.D.). Lessons learned throughout the job transition process are shared to illuminate the path for SLPs who are curious entering a university setting. Additionally, the author’s experience in the TLCSD SoTL Fellows Program is discussed.

Exploration Of Student Reflections Using The Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (Rtss) As An Intervention Planning Framework, Tracey E. Recigno, Alison Bell, M. Ferraro

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Teaching intervention planning is enhanced with an intentional course design that incorporates critical thinking in order to prepare the next generation of occupational therapy practitioners. The context for this study was a physical disabilities intervention course for an entry-level occupational therapy program that used Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning as a basis for learning outcomes. A novel formative intervention planning assignment required students to use the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) as a framework to guide their thinking. A qualitative retrospective content analysis of student reflections at the end of the course revealed that the RTSS added value to their …

Using Self-Assessment And Reflection To Develop Self-Efficacy In Occupational Therapy Assistant Fieldwork Students, Kristy Meyer, Julie Hunley

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Many occupational therapy students navigate the transition to the Level II fieldwork experience effortlessly, while others require support due to a lack of perceived self-efficacy. This perception dramatically impacts fieldwork performance and challenges academic fieldwork coordinators to support students struggling to believe in their own capabilities. This study utilized a quantitative quasi-experimental research design with a purposive sample of 16 occupational therapy assistant students to determine if an educational intervention increased perceived self-efficacy and overall confidence. Data collected from the Student Confidence Questionnaire (SCQ) pre, and post-intervention provided insight into the students’ report of perceived self-efficacy and overall confidence during …

The Weight Of The World, Tobin Chakkala Oct 2021

The Weight Of The World, Tobin Chakkala

be Still

Studying for board exams can be a rewarding but taxing process. There will always be more books to read, questions to do, and flashcards to memorize. I think every medical student remembers that moment of internal reflection, where they had to set realistic expectations that wouldn’t compromise their physical and mental health.

This drawing is a personal reminder that when we neglect other areas in our lives, we compromise the the balance needed to succeed. Thus, making time for yourself is not a sign of weakness, but rather an understanding of how to achieve sustainable progress during this medical journey.

Collaborating With A Transitional Care Unit To Provide Student Hands-On Time: A Win-Win For Hospital And Academic Institution, Emily Grattan, Amanda K. Giles

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy students crave hands-on learning experiences that take place in authentic environments. This study describes an innovative experiential learning activity involving collaboration between an academic institution and an inpatient transitional care unit (TCU). Three cohorts of second year occupational therapy students (N=138) participated in the TCU learning activity, which involved reviewing the electronic medical record, planning and delivering a treatment, documenting the therapy session, and intentionally reflecting on the experience. Based on an optional, anonymous survey, one hundred percent of students reported that “this learning experience was valuable” and “provided opportunity to practice clinical reasoning.” Ninety-nine percent of students …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The Occupation-Centered Intervention Assessment (OCIA) was created to assist occupational therapy practitioners and students to apply knowledge of the core theoretical constructs of occupation from didactic education to clinical practice. This study investigated how the OCIA influenced students’ professional reasoning and supported students’ transition from academic education to clinical practice during fieldwork. Using an inductive qualitative approach, researchers analyzed master’s level students’ (n=61) reflection on using the OCIA to analyze an intervention they had reported providing during fieldwork. Collaborative data analysis produced 48 initial codes. Ongoing peer briefing led to grouping of coded data into three themes and 15 subthemes, …

A Career Eulogy Reflective Exercise: A View Into Early Professional Identity Formation, William Crump, R. Steve Fricker, Allison Crump-Rogers

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Beginning medical students have a very early idea of what their physician identity will be. Providing a brief structured opportunity to reflect on the end of their career can be an important first step in identity formation.

Methods

A reflective exercise was used in the summer prior to beginning medical school as each class of students at a regional rural medical school began a summer prematriculation program from 2015-2019. Students wrote what they wished to be said about them at the end of their career using a “Career Eulogy.” Identifiers were removed and narratives were coded into recurring text …

Self-Reflection And Measurement Of Professional Behavior Growth In Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students, Brenda S. Howard, Rebecca Barton Jan 2019

Self-Reflection And Measurement Of Professional Behavior Growth In Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students, Brenda S. Howard, Rebecca Barton

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy (OT) educators have recognized the need to facilitate student professional development along a continuum of behavior that leads them toward professionalism. Reflection has often been a tool assisting in that process. The teaching of professional behavior has been a curricular thread throughout entry-level OT programs. Few studies exist, however, that have measured use of a self-assessment tool for reflection and development of professional behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine how self-perception of professional behaviors changed in two cohorts of an entry-level occupational therapy program. Investigators compared two cohorts of students at two points in time …

The Gift Of Pain With Transformative Possibilities, Richard B. Hovey

Patient Experience Journal

This personal narrative explores the experiences of pain metaphorically as a gift. The intention of this article is to offer alternative ways to reflect on pain, life and taking risks to move from health literacy toward health agency with help. I describe my approach to decision making using the hermeneutic wager which provides a means to imagine possibilities while mindfully assessing risk. Learning to manage pain and learning to live well with pain is a gift that we are not always aware is within our grasp.
