Clinical Characteristics, Antimicrobial Resistance And Treatment Outcomes Of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli Infection In Dogs And Cats At A Veterinary Teaching Hospital In Thailand, Jeerawat Soonthornsit, Sukanya Apiratwarrasakul, Nathita Phumthanakorn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli and its antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and analyzed the treatment outcomes of MDR E. coli infection in dogs and cats. The medical data of dogs and cats diagnosed in 2020 with E. coli infection at a veterinary teaching hospital were analyzed. Of 94 cases, the frequency of MDR E. coli (66%) infection was higher than that of non-MDR E. coli (34%). MDR E. coli was significantly more frequently detected in female dogs than non-MDR E. coli (P < 0.026). The most frequent MDR E. coli isolation sites were the urinary tract in dogs and skin wounds in cats. MDR E. coli isolates from dogs were highly resistant to ampicillin (96.1%), enrofloxacin (80.4%) and tetracycline (78.4%). Resistance to ampicillin (100%), enrofloxacin (90.9%), marbofloxacin (72.7%) and tetracycline (72.7%) occurred frequently in MDR E. coli isolates from cats. Low resistance to amikacin was detected in the MDR E. coli isolates from dogs and cats. The rates of clinical cure and non-clinical cure of the MDR E. coli and non-MDR E. coli cases were not significantly different. The duration of antimicrobial treatment for MDR E. coli was significantly longer in cats (12.6 ± 5.85 days) than in non-MDR E. coli cases (7 ± 0 days) (P < 0.048). Adjunctive therapy was prescribed more frequently in MDR E. coli (20%) than non-MDR E. coli cases (8.3%). The presence of MDR E. coli was high in this study. High resistance to commonly used antimicrobial drugs and treatment complications was observed in this study.

Retrospective Analysis Of The Incidence, Aetiology And Risk Factors Of Sepsis Based On Post-Mortem Examination Records In Ruminants, Batrisyia Syazana Faridon, Mohd Zamri-Saad, Annas Salleh

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Sepsis is an important disease in both humans and animals. In animals, it is usually caused by septicaemia after infection and has not been well-studied. This article describes a retrospective analysis of sepsis cases in small and large ruminants submitted to the Post-Mortem Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia between the years 2007 and 2017. The incidence of sepsis was found to be at 40.5% in small ruminants and 38.6% in large ruminants. In both small and large ruminants, sepsis was mainly caused by bacterial infection, which was significantly (p<0.05) higher compared to parasitic and viral infections. Most cases of sepsis occur due to infections originating from the gastrointestinal tract and this is followed by the respiratory tract. Escherichia coli has been found to be the most common bacterial pathogen of sepsis in ruminants; significantly (p<0.05) higher compared to other bacterial pathogens like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella sp., and Staphylococcus aureus. Sepsis involving E. coli has often resulted in pure isolation of the pathogen, thus being suggestive of a single infection. Underlying or concurrent infection is the most important risk factor leading to sepsis in ruminants, with significant difference (p<0.05) compared to other risk factors such as stress or malnutrition. Associations between the gastrointestinal system as the point of entry and sepsis caused by either E. coli or K. pneumoniae have been noted. This study provides an insight into a basic understanding of sepsis in ruminants.

Characterization Of The Role That Alternative Ribonucleotide Reductases Play In Restoring Replication In The Presence Of Hydroxyurea In Escherichia Coli, Michael Sadek Jun 2015

Characterization Of The Role That Alternative Ribonucleotide Reductases Play In Restoring Replication In The Presence Of Hydroxyurea In Escherichia Coli, Michael Sadek

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

DNA replication is essential for cells to grow and divide. Ribonucleotide reductase is an essential enzyme that is responsible for the formation of deoxyribonucleotides that are used in DNA synthesis during replication. Hydroxyurea is a chemotherapeutic agent that is thought to work by specifically inhibiting the ribonuceotide reductase to prevent replication. However, recent studies in E. coli have shown that following an initial period of inhibition, DNA synthesis then recovers in the presence of hydroxyurea, suggesting that the mode of death and cellular response to hydroxyurea is more complex than originally proposed. The E.coli genome encodes three ribonucleotide reductases that …

Serum Pharmacokinetics And Tissue Concentrations Of A Newrecrystallized Enrofloxacin Hydrochloride-Dihydrate In Hamsters, Alma Carrascosa, Alejandro De La Peña, Lilia Gutierrez, Hector Sumano

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and PK/PD ratios of a new solvate of enrofloxacin (enrofloxacin hydrochloride-dihydrate; enro-C), were studied in hamsters. Enrofloxacin from Baytril1397904493 5% (enroR) served as the reference preparation. Two groups of 60 Syrian golden hamsters were intramuscularly injected individually with 10 mg/kg of enroR or with enro-C. Tissue and serum samples were obtained for 72 h; enrofloxacin concentrations were determined by HPLC with UV detection. Ninety percent minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC90) were determined for strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira interrogans, and Escherichia coli. All PK variables were statistically different between groups (P < 0.01). CMAX of enrofloxacin for enro-C was 17.3 μg/mL and it was 2.6 μg/mL for enroR. AUC was considerably higher for enro-C (459.2 μg/mL h vs. 19.9 μg/mL h). There were no statistically significant differences in MIC90 values between enroR and enro-C. Tissue concentrations of enro-C in all cases were higher and remained above the MIC for longer periods than those of enroR. Relevant PK/PD ratios for enrofloxacin (AUC/MIC ? 125 and CMAX > MIC = 10-12) are consequently …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The present work, among other previous studies done in our lab, aimed to highlight the histopathological effect of S. xylosus peptidoglycan in comparison to LPS of E. coli. Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty urine specimens were collected from urinary tract infection patients visiting Baghdad hospitals. The histopathological effects of S. xylosus S24 peptidoglycan was studied in the urinary tract of female mice by injecting 5 animal groups at the following concentrations: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 µg/mL. Another 5 groups were injected with 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 ng/mL of E. coli (serotype 0128:B12) LPS. Results: …

Prevalence Of The Cellular And Molecular Antimicrobial Resistance Against E. Coli Isolated From Thai Broilers, Sarawoot Mooljuntee, Piyarat Chansiripornchai, Niwat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The antimicrobial resistant characteristics both of the cellular and molecular levels of Escherichia coli in broilers were performed by disk diffusion test and polymerase chain reaction technique. Specific primers for the aadA, aac(3)-IV, cmlA, cat1, tetA, sul1, SHV, CITM, ereA and dhfrV gene were used to detect resistance to gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, cephalothin, ampicillin, erythromycin, sulfonamide+trimetroprim. The 30 samples of E. coli were found to be 100% antimicrobial disk resistant to tetracycline, ampicillin and erythromycin and revealed a 90%, 93.3% and 73.3% resistant gene to tetA, CITM and ereA, respectively. While resistance to 73.3% cephalothin and 26.7% sulfonamide+trimethoprim was revealed …
