Diagnosis And Excision Of A Solitary Trichoepithelioma, Leonid Skorin Jr., Do, Od, Ms Oct 2022

Diagnosis And Excision Of A Solitary Trichoepithelioma, Leonid Skorin Jr., Do, Od, Ms

Optometric Clinical Practice

Abstract

Background: Solitary trichoepithelioma is a rare benign tumor of hair follicle origin. Although trichoepithelioma has a predilection for the face and neck, it is not usually found on the eyelids. It has similar clinicopathological features to basal cell carcinoma. Surgical excision and histopathologic analysis is helpful for correct diagnosis.

Case Report: A 59-year-old Caucasian female presented with a raised, reddish oval mass on the right lower eyelid. The mass had telangiectatic blood vessels on its surface, was non-pigmented and slightly umbilicated. It was in close approximation of the eyelid margin causing distortion and poor apposition of the lid to …

Odor Detection Of Cancer Cell Metabolites By Scent-Detection Dogs, Geontae Park, Dongwook Kim, Seongsoo Jeong, Dongsun Park, Gonhyung Kim Sep 2022

Odor Detection Of Cancer Cell Metabolites By Scent-Detection Dogs, Geontae Park, Dongwook Kim, Seongsoo Jeong, Dongsun Park, Gonhyung Kim

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Dogs have a superior olfactory system; thus, they have been trained and used to detect various nonbiological and biological scents. In addition, many studies have recently reported dogs’ ability to detect the odor of certain cancers or cancer cells. A previous study documented that a dog trained to detect a certain malignant cancer cell could also detect another, unfamiliar malignant cancer cell well, implying that these two cancer cells share a certain specific odor. Thus, given the hypothesis that malignant cancer cells of different origins may contain a common cancer-specific odor, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate …

Treatment Of Basal Cell Carcinoma With Vismodegib, Sunitha Johns, Katlyn Brown, Emily Loudermilk, Crystal Zheng, Anh Dao Le, Sophocles Chrissobolis

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

The most prevalent nonmelanoma skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (aBCC). Current, effective first-line treatments for BCC aim to remove and destroy cancerous skin cells through excision surgery, Mohs surgery, radiation therapy and cryotherapy, while treatment of aBCC remains limited. An emerging treatment option for aBCC that promotes tumor size reduction is vismodegib, a pharmaceutical product approved in 2012 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Vismodegib was approved for the treatment of aBCC, metastasized HCC (mBCC) or recurrent BCC after surgery as well as for use in adults who are not …

Programmed Death Pathway Inhibition: Emerging Therapeutic Options For Treatment Of Advanced Or Refractory Cancers, Katherine Elsass, Morgan Homan, Jana Randolph, Brendan Rasor, David Kinder

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

The programmed death-1 (PD-1) pathway has a significant role in the promotion of immune tolerance. The PD-1 receptor ligands are normally expressed on various inactive immune cells. When cancer cells express these ligands, they are able to interact with active T and B lymphocytes to induce this tolerance. Nivolumab and pembrolizumab are two recently approved agents that act to disrupt this binding and facilitate an immune response against cancer cells. Numerous trials, including KEYNOTE-002 and CheckMate 063, have demonstrated the superior safety and efficacy of these drugs in patients with advanced or refractory cancers. Initially approved for the treatment of …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background : Renal cell carcinomas (RCC) represent about 1 - 3% of all visceral cancers and 85% of renal cancers in adults. The tumors occur most often in old age, usually in sixth and seventh decades of life, and more predominantly in males. There are different prognosis between each subtype of RCC and different targeted therapy of choice for clear cell and non-clear cell subtypes of RCC. Subtype differentiation of RCC is quite important for guided treatments and predicted prognosis. (according to the NCCN's Clinical Practice Guideline for Renal Cancer 2009). Objective : This study aims to differentiate clear cell …
