Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is commonly used to treat sports-related tendinopathy or tendon injury. However, scientific evidence of the effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of tendinopathy treatment remained limited. Tendon healing requires tenocyte migration to the repair site, followed by proliferation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix, including collagens. The study was designed to determine the effect of laser on the metabolism of collagen for injuried tendon repair, furthermore, become a foundation of the LLLT for tendon repair. Methods: Tendon cells from rat Achilles tendons were obtained to investigate the effect of LLLT on collagen metabolism in tendon repair. …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

The critical need for students to learn to be effective members of interprofessional teams in preparation for collaborative practice-ready care provision now and in the future has been well documented1. There are increasing opportunities for students to observe interprofessional events to assist them in doing so, but often their role is passive and the teams may not demonstrate the highest level of patient-centered care, minimizing the student learning.

Developing An Open Educational Resource For Interprofessional Education (Ipe), Susanne P. Boyle, Bsc, Msc, Phd, Fhea, Matthew Ramirez, Lynn Sheridan

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

A recent review of pre-qualifying interprofessional education in the UK reported the practical challenges of synchronising interprofessional education1. Whilst it was noted that online interprofessional courses were developed primarily to overcome timetabling conflicts of students and clinicians from various health professions, it was recognised that a blended learning approach with appropriate student support could enable an effective interprofessional education experience with lower running costs and reduced disruption. It was found, however, that despite the ubiquity of e-learning in interprofessional education there seemed to be less sharing than expected1.

Earlier this year, members of the medical intensive care unit (MICU) attended an interprofessional workshop that utilized Awakening/Breathing/Choice of Sedation/Delirium/Early Mobility (ABCDE) bundle simulation combined with TeamSTEPPS training to empower care givers to advocate for patient safety while optimizing patient care. The ABCDE bundle is an evidence-based tool designed to implement pain, agitation, and delirium guideline recommendations into routine practice. To further improve patient safety and outcomes and build upon the ABCDE concept, the MICU team developed an interprofession-al practice project by adding routine assessment of need for indwelling Foley catheters to their daily work list, creating the “ABCDEF” bundle.

Examination Of Capital Murder Jurors’ Deliberations: Methods And Issues, Keith Price, Susan Coleman, Gary R. Byrd

Administrative Issues Journal

The study of capital juries remains a subject of critical interest for the public and for legislative and judicial policy makers as well as legal scholars and social scientists. Cowan, Thompson, and Ellsworth established one of the standard methodologies for examination of this topic in their 1984 seminal study by observing the subjects’ debate about conviction in a death penalty case utilizing mock juries; other scholars employed different techniques to add more information in the late 1990s. Yet, the question of death qualification and prosecutorial bias remains open to inquiry. This preliminary study found evidence to support bias toward conviction …

Timing For Male Reproductive Tract Gene Expression And Gonopore Complex Development Of Giant Freshwater Prawn (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii), Prapruddee Piyaviriyakul, Damri Darawiroj

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Mono-sex culture of giant freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) gives more benefits than mixed-sex culture because of high market demand for male prawns. Unfortunately, sex differentiation in crustaceans could not obviously be observed in their early larval stage. Therefore, sex segregation or sex reversal techniques need to be developed and timing for sex differentiation in M. rosenbergii during larval development needs to be examined. In this study, three genes related to male reproductive hormone (IAG, MRR and MAL) were isolated and amplified from terminal ampulae (TA) of adult male M. rosenbergii. The male specific transcripts demonstrated that they could be used …

Understanding, Selecting, And Integrating A Theoretical Framework In Dissertation Research: Creating The Blueprint For Your “House”, Cynthia Grant, Azadeh Osanloo

Administrative Issues Journal

The theoretical framework is one of the most important aspects in the research process, yet is often misunderstood by doctoral candidates as they prepare their dissertation research study. The importance of theory-driven thinking and acting is emphasized in relation to the selection of a topic, the development of research questions, the conceptualization of the literature review, the design approach, and the analysis plan for the dissertation study. Using a metaphor of the “blueprint” of a house, this article explains the application of a theoretical framework in a dissertation. Steps for how to select and integrate a theoretical framework to structure …

That, That, But Not That… Using A Cafeteria Plan To Enhance Writing Skills, Tina T. Fields, Jeffrey J. Hatala

Administrative Issues Journal

College students have difficulty in written communication, despite attempts by universities to place English courses in the “core curriculum.” Although many companies indicate that writing is an expected competency, and many companies consider writing when they promote, students still enter the workforce with poor grammar skills. Clear and concise communication is especially important in the health professions, where life-and-death decisions may be made based on written communication. Instructors in a large southwestern university used the concept of “selection” to provide more opportunities for students to practice their writing skills. Students could self-select up to 19 written assignments throughout the semester, …

Psychologists and psychoanalysts distinguish between testimony, or personal accounts, and discourse, a fixed societal account. Because genocide, for the survivor, is not a subject of study, we must not only look at the various discourses concerning the genocide, but at their effect on the survivors. We describe how the post-G-Gacaca therapy groups, established to help survivors who had participated in Gacaca assemblies, demonstrated how expression is only effective when it is directed at someone and this person agrees to hear it and be affected by it.
