Mental health is a major burden on residents of Vermont. Access to care is the most commonly cited cause. An evidence-based pamphlet was designed to empower providers to quickly and easily help patients start a meditation practice to help address such concerns.

Mental health illness is a pervasive and incurs tremendous cost onto society. Patients benefit from a multi factorial approach to treatment including non-pharmacological methods. This project includes development of a handout utilizing compiled resources and motivational interviewing to facilitate patient use of these interventions.

Hidden Adolescent Risks: Provider Education On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Bailey Fay

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been shown to be a strong risk factor for suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. One study has shown over 50% of people engaging in NSSI have at least one suicide attempt in their lifetime. The 2015 Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey found 17% of high school students reported non-suicidal self-injury at least once in the past year. This reflects roughly one in four females and one in ten males. Furthermore, these numbers have increased significantly since 2013. It is estimated that 2.6 million adolescents suffer from major depressive episodes each year. Research has noted that symptoms in youth have become indicators of mental health complications later in life. Studies reveal that low income is a risk factor for depression and that socioeconomically-disadvantaged teenagers are more than twice as likely to develop mental illnesses. Only roughly 25% of children with mental illnesses receive adequate help and 80% of these resources come from schools. This study focuses on establishing the importance of depression intervention programs in low-income high schools and on designing novel guidelines for effective protocols. A compilation …

At least 20% of all primary care visits are related to mental health. A limited number of patients are being referred to therapy, even though therapy is shown to be as effective as medication for disorders like depression and anxiety. A pamphlet was designed to explain what psychotherapy is to patients and to describe several common therapy modalities.
