Background/aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) may cause modifications in body composition, particularly for body fat associated with obesity and some biochemical parameters such as lipid profiles. We investigated whether there is a link between the inflammatory contents of diets and body composition and lipid profiles in patients with MS. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study that included 85 MS patients. The study data of the patients were collected in the Neurology Clinic of Ondokuz Mayıs University?s Health Practice and Research Center. The data included demographic characteristics; anthropometric measurements such as body weight, height, body mass index, waist circumference, hip …

The Effect Of Immunonutrition On Tumor Infiltrative T Lymphocytes And Regulatory T Cells In Rectal Tumor Patients Receiving Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Study, Mehmet Onur Gül, Cebrai̇l Akyüz, Selvi̇naz Özkara Jan 2022

The Effect Of Immunonutrition On Tumor Infiltrative T Lymphocytes And Regulatory T Cells In Rectal Tumor Patients Receiving Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Study, Mehmet Onur Gül, Cebrai̇l Akyüz, Selvi̇naz Özkara

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The rationale behind using immunonutrition in cancer patients is to prevent malnutrition, manage the host's immune response, and keep cancer under control by utilizing the potential immune system available in the host against the tumor. This prospective- study aims to assess the impact of immunonutrition on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Materials and methods: This is a single-center, prospective study. Forty patients diagnosed with middle and lower rectal tumors were enrolled in the study between March 2018 and December 2019. Nutrition protocols were given to all study subjects prior …

Serum Growth Differentiation Factor-15 Analysis As A Malnutrition Marker Inhemodialysis Patients, Di̇dem Turgut, Deni̇z İlhan Topcu, Cemi̇le Cansu Alperen, Sidika Esra Baskin Jan 2021

Serum Growth Differentiation Factor-15 Analysis As A Malnutrition Marker Inhemodialysis Patients, Di̇dem Turgut, Deni̇z İlhan Topcu, Cemi̇le Cansu Alperen, Sidika Esra Baskin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Growth differentiation factor (GDF)-15 is related to inflammation and mortality in many conditions. We aimed to determine if an elevated serum GDF-15 level is related to nutritional status of patients on hemodialysis (HD) and mortality. Materials and methods: Routine HD patients (n = 158) were included in the study and followed for 18 months. Some malnutrition/ inflammation scoring indexes (malnutrition/inflammation score (MIS), controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, and prognostic nutritional index (PNI)), biochemical parameters, and GDF-15 were used to build Cox regression multivariate models to study the association with mortality. Results: Among the patients, 90 (57 %) had a …

Early Pregnancy After Bariatric Surgery: A Single-Institute Preliminary Experience, Emre Günakan, Hakan Buluş, Yusuf Aytaç Tohma Jan 2020

Early Pregnancy After Bariatric Surgery: A Single-Institute Preliminary Experience, Emre Günakan, Hakan Buluş, Yusuf Aytaç Tohma

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pregnancy after bariatric surgery is an issue of growing importance with increasing number of women undergoing bariatric surgery. Therefore, in this study we present patients who conceived after sleeve gastrectomy and evaluate the obstetric outcomes. Materials and methods: This retrospective case-control study includes 23 women who conceived after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Patients were evaluated in two groups according to the number of months between surgery and conception (group 1: ≤12 months; group 2: >12 months). Results: The mean body mass index of patients before surgery and at the time of conception was 46.6 kg/m2 and 29.7 kg/m2, respectively. Nine …

Glycemic Index Values Of Monofloral Turkish Honeys And The Effect Oftheir Consumption On Glucose Metabolism*, Ali̇ Ti̇muçi̇n Atayoğlu, Meltem Soylu, Si̇bel Si̇li̇ci̇, Neri̇man İnanç Jan 2016

Glycemic Index Values Of Monofloral Turkish Honeys And The Effect Oftheir Consumption On Glucose Metabolism*, Ali̇ Ti̇muçi̇n Atayoğlu, Meltem Soylu, Si̇bel Si̇li̇ci̇, Neri̇man İnanç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Clinical trials have shown that low glycemic index (GI) nutrition reduces mean blood glucose concentrations and insulin secretions. The aim of the present study was to determine the GI values of various monofloral (citrus, milk-vetch, chestnut, thyme, lime, pine) honeys of Turkey, and the effect of their consumption on glucose metabolism. Materials and methods: Processing data from 20 healthy volunteers, GI values were determined from the glycemia values by using the incremental area method. Serum insulin and C-peptide levels were also measured before and 120 min after the test. Results: The GI values of citrus, thyme, lime, chestnut, pine, …

Malnutrition is a common medical condition among intensive care unit patients. It should be monitored carefully, since early management of malnutrition can dramatically improve the medical condition of the patients. A general consideration of enteral feeding shows that it is much more useful than parenteral administration, because it is more physiological and poses a lower risk of hyperalimentation. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, we scanned all files and personal information of patients hospitalized in intensive care units between 2009 and 2012 due to various medical conditions. We evaluated the nutritional status of patients with biochemical parameters that were …

Nutritional Assessment Via Anthropometric And Biochemical Measurements With Stable Copd, Mehmet Meral, Ömer Araz, Eli̇f Yilmazel Uçar, Nusret Yilmaz, Ni̇hal Arzu Mi̇ri̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Nutritional assessment is important for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aims at investigating the relation between the anthropometric and biochemical parameters for nutritional assessment with pulmonary function tests in COPD. Materials and methods: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study. Thirty-nine patients with stable COPD were enrolled the study. We evaluated the anthropometric [body mass index (BMI), skinfold thickness (SFT), and arm muscle circumference (AMC)], biochemical [serum total protein, albumin, transferrin, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN)], and spirometric [forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC] measurements, as well as …

The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

How perfect a food or meal is depends on hedonic and nutritional factors. The hedonic component is influenced by all of our 5 senses. In addition, social, environmental, and cognitive/experiential factors may have an effect on our attitude towards a food. On the other hand, nutrient composition and content, as well as bioavailability, determine how nutritionally perfect a food is. So, does the perfect food exist? What makes a food or a meal perfect? This paper will try to answer these questions by briefly discussing the most important variables.
