Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The field of nanotechnology is rapidly progressing with potential applications in the automobile, healthcare, electronics, cosmetics, textiles, information technology, and environmental sectors. Nanomaterials are engineered structures with at least one dimension of 100 nanometers or less. With increased applications of nanotechnology, there are increased chances of exposure to manufactured nanomaterials. Recent reports on the toxicity of engineered nanomaterials have given scientific and regulatory agencies concerns over the safety of nanomaterials. Specifically, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has identified fourteen high priority nanomaterials for study. Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles are one among the high priority group. Recent data …
Fueling Sport Performance: Increasing Awareness In Female Collegiate Vegetarian Athletes, Rachael Irene Marie Sofie
Fueling Sport Performance: Increasing Awareness In Female Collegiate Vegetarian Athletes, Rachael Irene Marie Sofie
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Vegetarian diets, when well-planned out, have been shown to meet the needs of female athletes. Although the lifestyle provides many benefits, it does not come without risk. Women athletes, in particular, are of the greatest concern. Energy restriction is common among female collegiate athletes. Because athletes are already converting to and practicing a vegetarian lifestyle, it is necessary that athletes and related sport professionals become aware of the risks and benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. By increasing knowledge among related personnel, athletes can use vegetarianism as a performance enhancer. Outlining possible implications of the lifestyle will allow female collegiate athletes …
Visualization Of The Passive Sink Phenomenon In Nonexercising Lower Extremity Muscle Using Two Sampling Sites: Consequences For Assessment And Training, Michelle Elyse Copolo
Visualization Of The Passive Sink Phenomenon In Nonexercising Lower Extremity Muscle Using Two Sampling Sites: Consequences For Assessment And Training, Michelle Elyse Copolo
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In the past, interest in the application of human performance and testing values has been limited to exercise professionals and those who participate in physical activity at high levels. One common method exercise physiologists employ to determine performance is the assessment of blood lactate concentration [La - ] through sampling. Blood lactate has been studied extensively; however, selection of an optimal sample site for drawing blood lactate is still an ongoing concern for exercise physiologists. Site selection can impact the values of blood [La - ] being reported, which can in turn impact the development of the training prescription. Studies …
Nuclear Receptor Expression And Characterization Of The Major Retinoic Acid Target Gene In Melanoma, Linda L. Eastham
Nuclear Receptor Expression And Characterization Of The Major Retinoic Acid Target Gene In Melanoma, Linda L. Eastham
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Malignant melanoma is the primary cause of death from all diseases arising from the skin and it is one of the most resistant tumors to standard treatment options. The increasing incidence of melanoma and its poor prognosis makes the understanding of melanoma cell biology very important. Melanoma progression is a complex, multi-step process, and the molecular events leading to melanoma tumor cell proliferation and invasion still need further examination. This study is focused on measuring the expression and activity of two specific genes and their protein counterparts that are altered during melanoma progression. It also examines the mechanism through which …
It Is Time To Talk About It: Designing A Health Communication Program For Eating Disorder Recovery In An Appalachian University, Erica Lynn Clites
It Is Time To Talk About It: Designing A Health Communication Program For Eating Disorder Recovery In An Appalachian University, Erica Lynn Clites
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the treatments used in current eating disorder programs and to develop a more effective model using two relevant communication theories: the Transtheoretical Model of Change and Social Networking Theory. Further, the thesis explored the need for greater mental health literacy on Appalachian college and university campuses as it relates to the three major eating disorders defined by the DSMIV-TR: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders. The analysis of current treatment revealed an overemphasis on physical health and quantitative medical progress. Applying both the Transtheoretical Model of Change and Social Networking …
The Role Of Ptip In Breast Cancer, Lina Niu
The Role Of Ptip In Breast Cancer, Lina Niu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In the U.S., breast cancer comprises about 30% of all cancer cases (excluding skin cancer) in women. Such a high incidence makes breast cancer a significant health concern, but our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of this disease is still limited. Growing evidence suggests that the development of human breast cancer may involve epigenetics, which attributes changes in phenotype to mechanisms other than changes in the DNA sequence itself. Histones as the chief proteins of chromatin work on gene expression, and methylation of histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) results in transcriptional activation. Lately, Paired box (Pax) trans-activation domain-interacting …
A Mechanistic Study Of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Protection Against Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity, James Michael Brown
A Mechanistic Study Of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Protection Against Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity, James Michael Brown
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Acetaminophen (APAP) toxicity remains the leading cause of drug induced liver failure in the United States. The current therapy for APAP toxicity is N-acetylcysteine (NAC). NAC must be administered within eight hours of APAP overdose for maximum efficacy. That, coupled with the fact that APAP toxicity may not be overtly evident, makes an alternative therapeutic intervention worth exploring. Previous work by our laboratory has demonstrated that S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) prevents APAP toxicity when given following APAP overdose in C57Bl/6 mice at a level comparable to NAC. The focus of the current work was to examine the mechanistic aspects of this protection …
Factors That Motivate Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists To Practice Independently In The Appalachian Region, Michael Lee Frame Jr.
Factors That Motivate Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists To Practice Independently In The Appalachian Region, Michael Lee Frame Jr.
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Independent Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) provide anesthesia services without the supervision or medical direction of anesthesiologists in healthcare facilities throughout the United States. The present literature is limited concerning the factors that motivate CRNAs to choose employment in rural independent practice.
Research Hypothesis: In a sample of CRNAs who practice independently in one of the 13 states of the Appalachian region there will be no differences between the CRNAs from Appalachian and Non-Appalachian counties in their responses to the motivation factors of achievement, recognition, responsibility, advancement, work itself, salary, working conditions, company and administrative policies, supervision, and …

Risk Factors For Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia In The Adult Trauma Patient: A Retrospective Case-Control Study From A Level I Trauma Center, Summer L. Chapman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) continues to be a common complication among the adult trauma population. Little advancements have been made to decrease the incidence, suggesting further research is needed to establish modifiable risk factors. The purpose of this study was to test for an associated link between prehospital intubation and the development of VAP in the adult trauma patient.
Methodology: A retrospective, case-control study design was utilized. The sample included 494 adult trauma patients who required endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation for a minimum of 24 hours. All patients presented as a priority one or two trauma to the Charleston …
Current Practices Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Treating Presbyphonia, Erin Taylor Carey
Current Practices Of Speech-Language Pathologists In Treating Presbyphonia, Erin Taylor Carey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of the research was to determine the current practices of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who treat presbyphonia, deterioration of the voice resulting from age-related changes in the larynx, observed mostly in elderly males. Recent research indicates voice therapy may hold promise for treatment of presbyphonia. However, concern exists for finding the best method of voice therapy for this condition. Several physiologic methods have been shown efficacious in the treatment of voice disorders, yet only one physiologic treatment has been examined in the treatment of presbyphonia. Information about SLPs’ treatment choices will expand the knowledge base of the field. The …
The Use Of Cerium Oxide And Curcumin Nanoparticles As Therapeutic Agents For The Treatment Of Ventricular Hypertrophy Following Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Madhukar Babu Kolli
The Use Of Cerium Oxide And Curcumin Nanoparticles As Therapeutic Agents For The Treatment Of Ventricular Hypertrophy Following Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Madhukar Babu Kolli
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and fatal disease characterized by inflammation, increased pulmonary vascular resistance, right ventricular failure and premature death. Monocrotaline (MCT) has been used to induce PAH in laboratory rats. Previous in vitro and in vivo work suggested that cerium oxide (CeO2)-and curcumin nanoparticles exhibit anti-inflammatory activity; however, it is unknown if these materials are effective for the treatment of PAH induced cardiac hypertrophy. To determine the efficacy of CeO2 nanoparticle treatment in preventing MCT-induced RV hypertrophy, male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into one of three groups (control, MCT, or MCT + CeO2 nanoparticle, n=6/group). …
The Effect Of An Elastic Eccentric Extensor Mechanism On Hamstring Function, Anna Elizabeth Sutton
The Effect Of An Elastic Eccentric Extensor Mechanism On Hamstring Function, Anna Elizabeth Sutton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Hamstring strains have a long recovery time, a high rate of recurrence, and are very common injuries in sports. Fatigue, improper warm-up, previous injury, strength imbalance, and poor flexibility have all been linked to hamstring injuries. Initial treatment of the hamstring typically consists of rest, ice, compression, elevation, and pain relief. However, no optimal treatment regimen has been developed based on carefully designed clinical trials. This study tested fourteen college-aged male and female subjects. Their gait was recorded using video tracking software with and without an elastic band (Theraband® Akron, Ohio) attached to the anterior surface of their waist and …
The Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor At The Blood-Brain Barrier In Diabetes, Aileen J. Marcelo
The Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor At The Blood-Brain Barrier In Diabetes, Aileen J. Marcelo
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Diabetes is a risk factor for stroke and vascular dementia. Clinical studies using gadolinium-magnetic resonance imaging techniques have shown diabetic patients exhibit a permeability increase at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) (Starr et al, 2003). The BBB, a vascular interface at the level of brain microvascular vessels, functions to provide nutrients and oxygen from the peripheral circulation, mediates waste efflux from the brain, and protects the brain from toxins. These functions are due to the presence of tight junction proteins. Animal studies have shown increased BBB permeability is due to a decrease in these proteins (Hawkins et al, 2007). Based on …

Redox Regulation Of Differentiation In Neuroblastoma, Anne Marie Silvis
Redox Regulation Of Differentiation In Neuroblastoma, Anne Marie Silvis
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in childhood, ranking third in prevalence among infant cancers. Despite intensive therapy with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, there is a high chance of tumor recurrence. These children are therefore given retinoids in the maintenance phase to differentiate the tumor cells and to avoid/lessen this incidence. Although 13-cis retinoic acid (13-cis RA) is currently used to treat neuroblastoma, there is much evidence supporting the prevalence of its metabolite, all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), to be the main signaling retinoid in vivo.
The SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cell line, which is composed of three sub-types: sympatheoadrenal neuroblasts …
