Correlates Of Tobacco Cessation Counseling Among Hispanic Physicians In The Us: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study., Francisco G Soto Mas, Héctor G Balcázar, Julia Valderrama Alberola, Chiehwen Ed Hsu

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Physician advice is an important motivator for attempting to stop smoking. However, physicians' lack of intervention with smokers has only modestly improved in the last decade. Although the literature includes extensive research in the area of the smoking intervention practices of clinicians, few studies have focused on Hispanic physicians. The purpose of this study was to explore the correlates of tobacco cessation counseling practices among Hispanic physicians in the US. METHODS: Data were collected through a validated survey instrument among a cross-sectional sample of self-reported Hispanic physicians practicing in New Mexico, and who were members of the New Mexico …

Using Technology To Teach Technology: Design And Evaluation Of Bilingual Online Physician Education About Electronic Medical Records., Sarah R. Edmonson, Adol Esquivel, Pallavi Mokkarala, Craig W. Johnson, Cynthia L. Phelps Jan 2005

Using Technology To Teach Technology: Design And Evaluation Of Bilingual Online Physician Education About Electronic Medical Records., Sarah R. Edmonson, Adol Esquivel, Pallavi Mokkarala, Craig W. Johnson, Cynthia L. Phelps

Journal Articles

The "EMR Tutorial" is designed to be a bilingual online physician education environment about electronic medical records. After iterative assessment and redesign, the tutorial was tested in two groups: U.S. physicians and Mexican medical students. Split-plot ANOVA revealed significantly different pre-test scores in the two groups, significant cognitive gains for the two groups overall, and no significant difference in the gains made by the two groups. Users rated the module positively on a satisfaction questionnaire.

Extending In Vitro Conditioning In Aplysia To Analyze Operant And Classical Processes In The Same Preparation, Björn Brembs, Douglas A. Baxter, John H. Byrne Jul 2004

Extending In Vitro Conditioning In Aplysia To Analyze Operant And Classical Processes In The Same Preparation, Björn Brembs, Douglas A. Baxter, John H. Byrne

Journal Articles

Operant and classical conditioning are major processes shaping behavioral responses in all animals. Although the understanding of the mechanisms of classical conditioning has expanded significantly, the understanding of the mechanisms of operant conditioning is more limited. Recent developments in Aplysia are helping to narrow the gap in the level of understanding between operant and classical conditioning, and have raised the possibility of studying the neuronal processes underlying the interaction of operant and classical components in a relatively complex learning task. In the present study, we describe a first step toward realizing this goal, by developing a single in vitro preparation …

Encouraging Adolescents Toward Mental Health Careers Via Website Biographies., Irmi U. Willcockson, Prabhu R. Shankar, Cynthia L. Phelps, Craig W. Johnson Jan 2003

Encouraging Adolescents Toward Mental Health Careers Via Website Biographies., Irmi U. Willcockson, Prabhu R. Shankar, Cynthia L. Phelps, Craig W. Johnson

Journal Articles

This project designed, developed, implemented and is currently evaluating the effectiveness of an interactive, multi-media website designed to encourage adolescents to consider careers in mental health. This Web-based learning environment features biographies of mental health scientists. Evaluation is conducted in a systematic, structured way using cognitive achievement, usability (ease of use), and affective scales (e.g., fun to use) as outcome measures

Comparing Communication Technology On Chinese, English, And Spanish Diabetes Web Sites., Yanko F Michea, Karen Pancheri, Yang Gong, Elmer Bernstam Jan 2002

Comparing Communication Technology On Chinese, English, And Spanish Diabetes Web Sites., Yanko F Michea, Karen Pancheri, Yang Gong, Elmer Bernstam

Journal Articles

Technological and cultural factors influence access to health information on the web in multifarious ways. We evaluated structural differences and availability of communication services on the web in three diverse language and cultural groups: Chinese, English, and Spanish. A total of 382 web sites were analyzed: 144 were English language sites (38%), 129 were Chinese language sites (34%), and 108 were Spanish language sites (28%). We did not find technical differences in the number of outgoing links per domain or the total availability of communication services between the three groups. There were differences in the distribution of available services between …

Detection Of Nonrandom Association Of Alleles From The Distribution Of The Number Of Heterozygous Loci In A Sample., R Chakraborty

Journal Articles

The distribution of the number of heterozygous loci in two randomly chosen gametes or in a random diploid zygote provides information regarding the nonrandom association of alleles among different genetic loci. Two alternative statistics may be employed for detection of nonrandom association of genes of different loci when observations are made on these distributions: observed variance of the number of heterozygous loci (s2k) and a goodness-of-fit criterion (X2) to contrast the observed distribution with that expected under the hypothesis of random association of genes. It is shown, by simulation, that s2k is statistically more efficient than X2 to detect a …
