Presurgical Ct Evaluation Of Congenital Aural Atresia, V. T. Nguyen, G. Paek, J. Hu, L. P. Smith

Journal Articles

Congenital aural atresia occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000‐20,000 births and may be surgically repaired if the middle ear malformation is limited in character. External auditory canal atresia is difficult to repair surgically, with significant risks and complications. Surgical candidacy in congenital aural atresia is based on multiple factors, central to which are the anatomy of the temporal bone and audiometric findings. High-resolution multidetector CT is the imaging technique of choice for anatomy delineation, although there are some specific indications for MR imaging in presurgical assessment. Various CT grading systems have been developed to determine surgical candidacy and are described …

INTRODUCTION: Multiple scoring systems have been proposed for prostate MRI reporting. We sought to review the clinical impact of the new Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System v2 (PI-RADS) and compare those results to our proposed Simplified Qualitative System (SQS) score with respect to detection of prostate cancers and clinically significant prostate cancers. METHODS: All patients who underwent multiparametric prostate MRI (mpMRI) had their images interpreted using PI-RADS v1 and SQS score. PI-RADS v2 was calculated from prospectively collected data points. Patients with positive mpMRIs were then referred by their urologists for enrollment in an IRB-approved prospective phase III trial …

Journal Articles

Sebaceous-gland carcinoma can occur alone or as one of the defining features of the Muir-Torre syndrome. Cases occurring below the head and neck are extremely rare. Here we describe the case of a 70-year-old male with Muir-Torre syndrome who had a recurrent sebaceous-gland carcinoma in the left lower extremity that demonstrated 18F-FDG avidity. An 18F-FDG-avid lower-extremity sebaceous-gland carcinoma has not been previously reported.

Evaluating Ct Perfusion Deficits In Global Cerebral Edema After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, H. Baradaran, V. Fodera, D. Mir, K. Kesavobhotla, J. Ivanidze, U. Ozbek, A. Gupta, J. Claassen, P. C. Sanelli

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Global cerebral edema is an independent predictor of mortality and poor outcomes after aneurysmal SAH. Global cerebral edema, a complex disease process, is thought to be associated with an altered cerebral autoregulatory response. We studied the association between cerebral hemodynamics and early global cerebral edema by using CTP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied consecutive patients with aneurysmal SAH with admission CTP performed at days 0-3. Two neuroradiologists classified global cerebral edema and hydrocephalus on NCCT performed concurrently with CTP. Global cerebral edema was defined as diffuse effacement of the sulci and/or basal cisterns or diffuse disruption …

Radionuclide Imaging: Past, Present And Future Outlook In The Diagnosis Of Infected Prosthetic Joints, L. Brammen, C. Palestro, H. Sinzinger

Journal Articles

Objective: A serious complication of joint replacement surgery is infection, which results in prolonged invalidity as well as removal and subsequent re-implantation after lengthy antibiotic therapy. In terms of diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine has presented several tracers and imaging modalities over the years to be used in prosthetic joint infection. The PubMed/MEDLINE literature database was systematically examined for publications on infection, arthroplasty, joint replacement, prosthetic joint, gallium, labeled leukocytes, sulfur colloid, antimicrobial peptides, Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18-FDG), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET-CT), and single-photon emission (SPET-CT). This was determined to be a comprehensive review, not a meta-analysis of prosthetic joint infection and …

Acute brain diseases such as acute strokes and transit ischemic attacks are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, responsible for 9% of total death every year. "Time is brain" is a widely accepted concept in acute cerebrovascular disease treatment. Efficient and accurate computational framework for hemodynamic parameters estimation can save critical time for thrombolytic therapy. Meanwhile the high level of accumulated radiation dosage due to continuous image acquisition in CT perfusion (CTP) raised concerns on patient safety and public health. However, low-radiation leads to increased noise and artifacts which require more sophisticated and time-consuming algorithms for robust estimation. …

Detection Of Symptomatic Carotid Plaque Using Source Data From Mr And Ct Angiography: A Correlative Study, A. Gupta, H. Baradaran, E. E. Mtui, H. Kamel, A. Pandya, A. Giambrone, C. Iadecola, P. C. Sanelli

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Carotid plaque MRI has been a useful method to characterize vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque elements. Recent investigations have suggested that source images from CT angiography (CTA) and MR angiography (MRA) can identify the simple high-risk features of symptom-producing carotid artery plaque. We studied the correlation and relative diagnostic accuracies of CTA and MRA source images in detecting symptomatic carotid artery plaque. METHODS: Subjects were eligible if they had carotid stenosis between 50 and 99% and had MRA and CTA exams performed within 10 days of one another. We measured the soft (non-calcified) plaque and hard (calcified) plaque thickness on CTA …

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ultrasonographic plaque echolucency has been studied as a stroke risk marker in carotid atherosclerotic disease. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the association between ultrasound-determined carotid plaque echolucency and future ipsilateral stroke risk. METHODS: We searched the medical literature for studies evaluating the association between carotid plaque echolucency and future stroke in asymptomatic patients. We included prospective observational studies with stroke outcome ascertainment after baseline carotid plaque echolucency assessment. We performed a meta-analysis and assessed study heterogeneity and publication bias. We also performed subgroup analyses limited to patients with stenosis >/=50%, studies in which …

Effect Of Reconstruction Algorithms On The Accuracy Of (99m)Tc Sestamibi Spect/Ct Parathyroid Imaging, K. J. Nichols, G. G. Tronco, C. J. Palestro

Journal Articles

The superiority of SPECT/CT over SPECT for (99m)Tc-sestamibi parathyroid imaging often is assumed to be due to improved lesion localization provided by the anatomic component (computed tomography) of the examination. It also is possible that this superiority may be related to the algorithms used for SPECT data reconstruction. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of SPECT reconstruction algorithms on the accuracy of MIBI SPECT/CT parathyroid imaging. We retrospectively analyzed preoperative MIBI SPECT/CT parathyroid imaging studies performed on 106 patients. SPECT data were reconstructed by filtered back projection (FBP) and by iterative reconstruction with corrections for collimator …
