Among college students, flu vaccination rates are abysmal. The unique barriers students face are numerous. This effort explores the value of a multidisciplinary approach to increasing flu vaccination. To improve vaccine rates, several departments have teamed up for a multidisciplinary approach to flu education and prevention. Plans for the entire semester are in place to highlight the importance flu prevention. Events include vaccination clinics, a library exhibit, talks, movie screenings, student work, themed menu items at the student café, and a competition. Vaccination rates will be assessed at the end of the fall semester and reported. We expect using a …

Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Osteoporosis is known as a pediatric disease with geriatric consequences. The need forbone health, awareness of controllable risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis begins duringone’s youth (Campbell, 2012; Cannada, 2016; Evenson & Sanders, 2016; Edmonds, Turner, &Usdan, 2012; Ford et al., 2011; Gammage et al., 2009; Gammage et al., 2012). Currently, mosthealth information and health campaigns focus on older adults. To promote measurableimprovements in reducing the number of cases of osteoporosis, the focus for change needs tostart as early as teenage and young adult age. In addition to the general population trends, ratesspecifically associated with the nonwhite U.S. population are …

This study assessed whether and how self-explanation reading training, provided by iSTART (Interactive Strategy Training for Active Reading and Thinking), improves the effectiveness of comprehension processes. iSTART teaches students how to self-explain and which strategies will most effectively aid comprehension from moment-to-moment. We used RSAT (Reading Strategy Assessment Tool) to assess how iSTART changes the relation between important selfexplanation reading strategies—bridging and elaboration—and online comprehension, and how often they are produced. College and high school students received iSTART and were administered RSAT prior to and post-training. Results from three experiments showed that iSTART primarily benefits bridging inferences when self explaining. …

Articulation Rate And Its Relationship To Disfluency Type, Duration, And Temperament In Preschool Children Who Stutter, Victoria Tumanova, Patricia Zebrowski, Rebecca Throneburg, Mavis Kulak Kayikci
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between articulation rate, frequency and duration of disfluencies of different types, and temperament in preschool children who stutter (CWS). In spontaneous speech samples from 19 children CWS (mean age = 3:9; years: months), we measured articulation rate, the frequency and duration of (a) sound prolongations; (b) soundsyllable repetitions; (c) single syllable whole word repetitions; and (d) clusters. Temperament was assessed with the Children’s Behavior Questionnaire (Rothbart et al., 2001). There was a significant negative correlation between articulation rate and average duration of sound prolongations (p<0.01), and between articulation rate and frequency of stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) (p<0.05). No other relationships proved statistically significant. Results do not support models of stuttering development that implicate particular characteristics of temperament as proximal contributors to stuttering; however, this is likely due to the fact that current methods, including the ones used in the present study, do not allow for the identification of a functional relationship between temperament and speech production. Findings do indicate that for some CWS, relatively longer sound prolongations co-occur with relatively slower speech rate, which suggests that sound prolongations, across a range of durations, may represent a distinct type of SLD, not just in their obvious perceptual characteristics, but in their potential influence on overall speech production at multiple levels.

Believing In Both Genetic Determinism And Behavioral Action: A Materialist Framework And Implications, Celeste Condit, Marita Gronnvoll, Jamie Landau, Lijiang Shen, Lanelle Wright, Tina Harris
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
A disparity exists between studies reporting that genetics discourse produces deterministic or fatalistic responses and studies reporting that the majority of laypeople do not hold or adopt genetically deterministic views. This article reports data from an interview study (n = 50), and an interpretation of those data grounded in materialist understandings of discourse, that explains at least part of the disparity. The article employs a detailed reading of an illustrative transcript embedded in a quantitative content analysis to suggest that laypeople have incorporated two sets of public discourses—one that describes genetic causation and another that describes behavioral causation. These different …

Durational, Proportionate, And Absolute Frequency Characteristics Of Disfluencies: A Longitudinal Study Regarding Persistence And Recovery, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
The main objective of this study was to investigate developmental aspects of disfluencies over time as stuttering persists or ameliorates for 2 groups of preschool age children who stutter. Results indicated that the frequency, type, and duration of disfluencies remained relatively constant instead of increasing as expected in the persistent group over a 3-year period. In contrast, the recovered group's initially higher frequency of disfluency decreased over time, as did their number of repetition units and proportion of disrhythmic phonations, while the duration of silent intervals between repetition units and proportion of monosyllabic word repetitions increased.

Relation Between Phonologic Difficulty And The Occurrence Of Disfluencies In The Early Stage Of Stuttering, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi, Elaine P. Paden
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
People who stutter, especially children, have often been reported to exhibit a wide range of concomitant communication problems including articulation and phonologic deficiencies. This study investigated the relation between the phonologic difficulty of words and the point at which stuttering-like disfluencies occurred in the speech of preschool children identified as having a stuttering problem (n = 24). The children were divided into subgroups according to stuttering severity and phonologic ability. A spontaneous speech sample of approximately 1,000 words was tape-recorded from each child, and perceived disfluencies were identified. The phonologic difficulty of each word on which there was a stuttering-like …
