Background: Population-based data regarding stroke among women are scarce in developing countries. This study was designed to determine whether sex differences exist in stroke incidence, mortality, and recurrence.
Methods: The Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study is a population-based cohort study in Iran. For a period of 1 year, all patients with stroke in 3 geographical regions in Mashhad were recruited and then followed up for 5 years. Age- and sex-specific crude incidence rates were standardized to the World Health Organization New World Population. Male-to-female incidence rate ratios were assessed for all age groups and all subtypes of first-ever stroke (FES). …
Catheter Ablation For Atrial Fibrillation: Predicting Recurrence, Kendra Thomas
Catheter Ablation For Atrial Fibrillation: Predicting Recurrence, Kendra Thomas
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Background
Catheter ablation has emerged as treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Health care-related variables have not been explored as predictors of first ablation outcome. Determining factors associated with arrhythmia recurrence may help select patients likely to benefit. The objective was to identify variables associated with recurrence following AF ablation.
Methods
Retrospective cohort design of 314 AF patients who had undergone first ablation. Follow-up visits occurred at 3, 6 and 12 months. Variables and the outcome of recurrence were modeled with Cox proportional hazards analysis.
Results/Conclusions
After mean follow-up of 239+/-125 days, 110/314 patients (35.0%) experienced recurrence. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards …

Seizures are relatively common in children and are a risk factor for subsequent temporal lobe epilepsy. To investigate whether early-life seizures themselves are detrimental to the proper function of the adult brain, we studied whether dendritic excitation and inhibition in the hippocampus of adult rats were altered after hyperthermia-induced seizures in immature rats. In particular, we hypothesized that apical dendritic inhibition in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells would be disrupted following hyperthermia-induced seizures in early life. Seizure rats were given three hyperthermia-induced seizures per day for three days from postnatal day (PND) 13 to 15; control rats were handled similarly but …
