Non-Nursing Courses' Impact On Nclex-Rn Pass-Rates In Associate Degree Nursing Programs, Nicole A. Garner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nurse educators make decisions regarding the inclusion or exclusion of non-nursing courses in a curriculum. The current literature lacks research regarding which courses have the most impact on first-time nursing licensing examination pass-rates. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate if there is a specific combination of courses that enhance first-time licensing examination pass-rates, using 161 randomly selected accredited associate degree nursing programs. General systems theory applied to nursing education was the framework for the study. ANOVA and independent t-tests were used to address the questions of non-nursing courses or discipline-specific set of non-nursing courses' impact on first-time …

Improving Advanced Practice Nurses' Knowledge Of Cerebral Hemorrhage Assessment And Management, Kimberly Marie Lombardo Jan 2018

Improving Advanced Practice Nurses' Knowledge Of Cerebral Hemorrhage Assessment And Management, Kimberly Marie Lombardo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cerebral hemorrhages are a type of stroke causing bleeding in the brain from a ruptured brain vessel or an aneurysm. In the emergency department (ED), advanced practice nurses (APNs') play a pivotal role in identifying cerebral hemorrhages. Many APNs' lack the skills necessary to assess, diagnose, and manage this type of stroke. A delay in diagnosis of cerebral hemorrhages carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality and can lead to lifelong disability or death. The framework of this project is the Patricia Benner theory of novice-to-expert, which is a 5-step approach designed to strengthen nursing skills with the goal …

Socioeconomic Status And Cancer Risks In Employer-Insured Cancer Survivors, Christine Clinton Jan 2018

Socioeconomic Status And Cancer Risks In Employer-Insured Cancer Survivors, Christine Clinton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Chronic illnesses such as cancer continue to be among the costliest for employers who provide health insurance to their employees. Despite efforts to incorporate health improvement programs in the workplace, there are concerns about the effectiveness of these programs that do not always deliver a positive return on investment. Little is known about the specific socioeconomic status of employees for whom these workplace health improvement programs are designed for. Guided by the social-ecological model, this study sought to understand the relationship between cancer health risks about socioeconomic factors among cancer survivors in the employer-insured population. Data were extracted from the …

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Disparity In Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Valencia L. Beckley Hildreth

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to be a challenge in the men who have sex with men (MSM) population. Initiatives to decrease rates of new HIV infections have proven less than optimal. Despite evidence-based interventions to curtail the prevalence and incidence rates of HIV infection, Black MSM have been most impacted with increased HIV incidence. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore the relationship, if any, between age, online and physical venues attended by participants within the last thirty days, neighborhood's perceived social environment, and HIV incidence in the non-Hispanic Black MSM population in a metropolitan statistical area …

How Relationship Quality Influences Male Condom Use In College Women, Nikki Hall Jan 2018

How Relationship Quality Influences Male Condom Use In College Women, Nikki Hall

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Young adult women in their first and second year of college are a group more commonly impacted by health-related concerns associated with condom use. Due to lack of consistent condom use and the increase in sexual partners, STIs remain an epidemic. Various types of studies have been conducted to investigate condom use among women college students. One factor that may influence condom use is the partner relationship. The literature on safe sex practices shows a gap regarding relationship quality and its potential influence on condom use. Guided by the Fletcher et al. model and Sternberg's triangular theory of love, the …

Nurse Navigator Role Description And Processes For Best Outcomes Among At-Risk Patients, Judean Leroy Jan 2018

Nurse Navigator Role Description And Processes For Best Outcomes Among At-Risk Patients, Judean Leroy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The nurse navigator role developed in the 1990s to support African American female oncology patients' access to services. Successful in oncology, the role has expanded to support patients with diabetes, heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A unique cost-effective opportunity exists for nurse navigators to fill the gap in transitional care, between the acute care setting and home, for chronically ill and other at-risk patients who are often readmitted within 30 days for treatment of the same disease. The purpose of the project was to refine the job description of the nurse navigators in a Midwestern acute care hospital. …

Program To Prevent Subsequent Fragility Fractures, Kathleen Jean Forti-Gallant

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

One out of 2 women and 1 out of 5 men over age 50 will sustain a fragility fracture (FF) in their lifetime. The risk of a 2nd FF increases dramatically after the 1st fracture and can lead to pain, disability, and mortality. Despite the evidence that secondary prevention programs are effective, the local facility did not have a formal mechanism to address this need. The purpose of this project was to design a program for secondary prevention of FFs and to address the need for a program for secondary FF prevention that was sustainable locally. The program was designed …
