Under contract with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and in accordance with the requirements of Senate Bill (SB)1258, the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI), University of South Florida, is conducting an ongoing formative evaluation of the financing strategies authorized to be implemented by the legislation. The demonstration sites that were selected were DCF District 1, including Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton Counties and DCF District 8, including Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties. FMHI’s role is to help identify the most effective methods and techniques used to manage, integrate, and deliver behavioral …

Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell Apr 2002

Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

The nature of the plant-animal interaction between wood-boring isopods and the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle L. has been controversial, with discussion ranging from the damage caused by the isopod being detrimental to beneficial for the mangroves they attack. Initiation of lateral roots by the mangrove in response to isopod burrowing has been one of the most commonly cited examples as support for the concept of beneficial herbivory. In this study, the possibility of root repair as a response of Rhizophora to burrowing by Sphaeroma terebrans Bate was evaluated. Previously burrowed prop roots were tagged in the field and the fate …

Span Span Away! Creating One Unique Record For Overlapping Admissions And Discharges From Multiple Inpatient Hospital Stays, Shabnam Mehra, Robyn Spittle, Rebecca Larsen, Diane Haynes, Kathleen Dailey Apr 2002

The Policy and Services Research Data Center (PSRDC) in the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy at The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute performs research with a variety of secondary mental health datasets. The data format is often manipulated to accommodate our research objectives. One example of this manipulation is “span coding” using SAS®. This code is specifically designed to transform overlapping inpatient hospital stays into one unique record by means of the admission and discharge dates. The techniques in this paper apply to health care agencies and the pharmaceutical industry but may easily …

The Herbicide Paraquat Causes Up-Regulation And Aggregation Of Α-Synuclein In Mice: Paraquat And Α-Synuclein, Amy B. Manning-Bog, Alison L. Mccormack, Jie Li, Vladimir N. Uversky, Anthony L. Fink, Donato A. Di Monte Jan 2002

The Herbicide Paraquat Causes Up-Regulation And Aggregation Of Α-Synuclein In Mice: Paraquat And Α-Synuclein, Amy B. Manning-Bog, Alison L. Mccormack, Jie Li, Vladimir N. Uversky, Anthony L. Fink, Donato A. Di Monte

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

α-Synuclein-containing aggregates represent a feature of a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). However, mechanisms that promote intraneuronal α-synuclein assembly remain poorly understood. Because pesticides, particularly the herbicide paraquat, have been suggested to play a role as PD risk factors, the hypothesis that interactions between α-synuclein and these environmental agents may contribute to aggregate formation was tested in this study. Paraquat markedly accelerated the in vitro rate of α-synuclein fibril formation in a dose-dependent fashion. When mice were exposed to the herbicide, brain levels of α-synuclein were significantly increased. This up-regulation followed a consistent pattern, with higher α-synuclein …

Elucidation Of The Molecular Mechanism During The Early Events In Immunoglobulin Light Chain Amyloid Fibrillation: Evidence For An Off-Pathway Oligomer At Acidic Ph, Pierre O. Souillac, Vladimir N. Uversky, Ian S. Millett, Ritu Khurana, Sebastian Doniach, Anthony L. Fink Jan 2002

Fink

Light chain amyloidosis involves the systemic pathologic deposition of monoclonal light chain variable domains of immunoglobulins as insoluble fibrils. The variable domain LEN was obtained from a patient who had no overt amyloidosis; however, LEN forms fibrils in vitro, under mildly destabilizing conditions. The in vitro kinetics of fibrillation were investigated using a wide variety of probes. The rate of fibril formation was highly dependent on the initial protein concentration. In contrast to most amyloid systems, the kinetics became slower with increasing LEN concentrations. At high protein concentrations a significant lag in time was observed between the conformational changes …

Biophysical Properties Of The Synucleins And Their Propensities To Fibrillate: Inhibition Of Α-Synuclein Assembly By Β- And Γ-Synucleins, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Pierre O. Souillac, Ian S. Millett, Sebastian Doniach, Ross Jakes, Michael Goedert, Anthony L. Fink Jan 2002

Biophysical Properties Of The Synucleins And Their Propensities To Fibrillate: Inhibition Of Α-Synuclein Assembly By Β- And Γ-Synucleins, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Pierre O. Souillac, Ian S. Millett, Sebastian Doniach, Ross Jakes, Michael Goedert, Anthony L. Fink

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the presence of intracellular inclusions, Lewy bodies, and Lewy neurites, in the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and several other brain regions. Filamentous α-synuclein is the major component of these deposits and its aggregation is believed to play an important role in Parkinson's disease and several other neurodegenerative diseases. Two homologous proteins, β- and γ-synucleins, are also abundant in the brain. The synucleins are natively unfolded proteins. β-Synuclein, which lacks 11 central hydrophobic residues compared with its homologs, exhibited the properties of a random coil, whereas α- and γ-synucleins were slightly more …

In this stage (which will be discussed in Module 8 in more detail) the client has achieved abstinence for at least six months. As relapse of substance use and gambling disorders is common, one important goal is to help maintain an awareness that relapse is possible and to take steps to minimize the chan ces of relapse occurring. A second goal of this stage is to expand the client’s recovery to other areas of functioning such as social relationships and health. Comm on strategies include developi ng a relapse prevention plan, participating in self-help groups , and working on rehabilitation.

This manual was created over a period of several months through the efforts of a working group comprised of substance abuse treatment practitioners and researchers affiliated with the Tampa PIC/Suncoast Practice and Research Collaborative project. The manual was field tested in several treatment agencies in the Tampa Bay area, and was then refined through feedback received by practitioners and clients regarding the manual’s utility, ease of comprehension, and perceived relevance of the material to their needs.

This manual provides a guide for conducting treatment groups related to co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. Counselors should feel free to adapt …
