The Meaning Of A Family History Of Colorectal Cancer In Black Families In The United States, Cassandra Loggins Nov 2018

The Meaning Of A Family History Of Colorectal Cancer In Black Families In The United States, Cassandra Loggins

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of a family history of colorectal cancer (CRC) for first-degree relatives of Blacks diagnosed with CRC. Even though CRC is more preventable than other cancers because of effective screening tests for prevention and early detection, Blacks experience a disproportionate burden of CRC compared to other groups. Interventions to increase CRC screening among Blacks have not produced a significant reduction in CRC disparity. Underutilization of CRC screening and low perceived risk of CRC are major factors contributing to CRC disparity. The informing methodological approach employed in this study was hermeneutic phenomenology, …

Transcriptomics Of Learning, Pablo Iturralde Jul 2018

Transcriptomics Of Learning, Pablo Iturralde

Theses

Learning is a basic and important component of behavior yet we have very little empirical information about the interaction between mechanisms of learning and evolution. In our work, we are testing hypotheses about the neurogenetic mechanisms through which animal learning abilities evolve. We are able to test this directly by using experimentally evolved populations of flies, which differ in learning ability. These populations were previously evolved within the lab by creating worlds with different patterns of change following theoretically predicted effects on which enhanced learning will evolve. How has evolution acted to modulate genes and gene expression in the brain …

Accreditation standards, such as those of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education’s program indicators, require pre-licensure programs of nursing to report outcome metrics which includes program completion rates. In response to regulatory requirements and accreditation standards, pre-licensure programs of nursing have an interest in selecting applicants most likely to meet outcomes standards. Attrition is a serious issue with implications for students, pre-licensure programs of nursing, the nursing workforce, and populations requiring nursing care. Academic failure due to insufficient cognitive aptitude often contributes to the attrition rate. Pre-licensure programs of nursing may consider interviews, essays, …

Interactions And Pathogen Transmission Between Carnivores In Madagascar, Fidisoa Rasambainarivo Apr 2018

Interactions And Pathogen Transmission Between Carnivores In Madagascar, Fidisoa Rasambainarivo

Dissertations

Introduced carnivores exert considerable pressure on native predators through predation, competition and disease transmission. Improved understanding of determinant factors of interactions and pathogen transmission between introduced and endemic wildlife may help to predict disease emergence, avoid pathogen spillover and help control outbreaks. Using non-invasive camera traps, I identified areas where transmission of pathogens might happen through records of shared space-use within a protected area in Eastern Madagascar. I showed that indirect interactions between animals were more likely to occur near the research station which may constitute a disease transmission hotspot for carnivores in the landscape. Secondly, I investigated the associations …
