Background Previous studies have demonstrated conflicting results with regard to differences in asthma control between the sexes.

Objective We sought to identify sex differences in short-term and long-term measures of asthma control in adults from the National Asthma Survey.

Methods This study analyzed data from the National Asthma Survey (Four-State sample) sponsored by the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Asthma control was compared between the sexes based on short-term (recent symptoms, asthma attacks, and albuterol use) and long-term (asthma attacks, work days lost, and urgent-care visits and hospitalizations in the prior year) measures.
