Feasible ways are needed to screen for dietary behaviors and taste preferences in clinical settings. We examined the internal validity and reliability of a brief survey to assess food preferences and dietary behaviors among morbidly obese individuals considering bariatric surgery. Survey-reported liking is a proxy for dietary intake, correlating with reported food intake and biomarkers of nutritional status (Sharafi et al, 2015) and linking taste genetics with diet and health (Pallister et al, 2015). Methods –Enrolled were 138 morbidly obese patients awaiting bariatric surgery, who completed a 100-item liking survey of foods/beverages, physical/sedentary activities, and pleasurable/unpleasurable experiences. INTRODUCTION: While animal studies consistently show a preventive role of statin use in colon cancer development, evidence from human studies is conflicting with recent reports suggesting an increased risk of aberrant crypt foci and adenoma. We hypothesize that insufficient control of confounding due to indication bias for prescribing of statins, particularly obesity-induced physiologic dysregulation, might partly explain discrepant results. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients receiving standard colonoscopy at the Colon Cancer Prevention Program of the University of Connecticut Health Center, which was followed by chromoendoscopy for ACF detection. Statement of problem: Correctional facilities are stressful, unhealthy and dangerous working environments, which increase the risk of chronic diseases and a shortened lifespan for employees, particularly corrections officers. The need exists for effective worksite interventions to lower chronic disease risk and improve health of correctional employees. Objective: The primary aim was to pilot test eight-week worksite nutrition and physical activity educationalintervention for correctional employees and to determine baseline indicators of weight loss success. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are the most prevalent occupational injuries in nursing home employees. Most of the research and interventions in the past 30 years have focused on teaching and training nursing home staff proper lifting and body mechanics to reduce the risk of injury. The weight of the nursing home staff and patients have increased dramatically in recent years parallel to the significant growth of adiposity in the general population with two out of three adults overweight, and one of four obese (Body mass index (BMI) > 30). Background Dysregulation of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system, a common consequence of adiposity-induced insulin resistance, may be a key underlying mechanism linking excess body weight with colon cancer. Evidence has been derived from studies of cancer and polyps. Supporting data about aberrant crypt foci (ACF), putative pre-polyp changes, have been generated only from animal studies to date. Methods We randomly selected 26 patients with sex-specific elevated waist-hip-ratio (WHR) and 26 with normal values from a series of 150 patients seeking routine colonoscopy at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Cross-sectional analyses were performed of ACF number (<5, ≥5) in relation to total IGF1, IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP3), insulin, body mass index (BMI), WHR and waist circumference (WC). Obesity and other related metabolic disorders are a common problem in the United States. Consequently, several drug therapies have been developed in an attempt to address this problem. Many older appetite suppressants, such as amphetamines, were dangerous and potentially addictive. For the last few years, the endocannabinoid system was investigated as a potential target for appetite suppression. Unfortunately, early cannabinoid CB1 antagonists came with an unacceptable side effect profile of their own, which is largely due to central actions of these drugs.
