Post-Hemicolectomy Latrogenic Femoral Nerve Damage-Casereport, Sau-Chin Mei, Yung-Szu Huang, I-Ping Liu Jun 1995

Post-Hemicolectomy Latrogenic Femoral Nerve Damage-Casereport, Sau-Chin Mei, Yung-Szu Huang, I-Ping Liu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Iatrogenic femoral nerve damage has already been described after retroperitoneal tumor resection, hysterectomy, abdominal rectoplexy and total hip arthroplasty etc., but never after ascending colon carcinoma resection. We report the occurrence of femoral nerve injury in a 76 years old male patients after the procedure of right hemicolectomy and debulking of the tumor. Neurological symptoms appeared immediately after surgery. Sensory deficit was evident with reduced sensation of the anterior surface of right thigh and knee. Weakness of quadriceps and iliopsoas muscles was obvious. Serial post-surgical (3 weeks, 2 months, and 6 months respectively) EMG examinations revealed severe denervations of R’t …

H-Reflex Study In Patients With C7 Radiculopathy, Sau-Chin Mei, I-Ping Liu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu Jun 1995

H-Reflex Study In Patients With C7 Radiculopathy, Sau-Chin Mei, I-Ping Liu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

H-reflexes of the flexor carpi radialis muscle were studied in 60 controls and 42 patients with C7 radiculopathy. Reflex parameters were compared to normal standards and correlated with clinical evaluations, radiologic and other electrophysiologic findings. The surface recording technique used was similar to that described in the previous report for the study of normal subjects. The present data reveled: 1) Patients with C7 radiculopathy showed an abnormally prolonged latency of the FCR H-reflex. It increased from an average of 16.8±1.9 msec in normal subjects to 22.4±1.7 msec, p<0.05. 2) The peak-to-peak amplitude of the H-reflex was significantly decreased from a normal …

Urinary Retention After Stroke, Jen-Wen Hung, Tsu-Kung Lin, Chau-Peng Leong, May-Kuen Wong Jun 1995

Urinary Retention After Stroke, Jen-Wen Hung, Tsu-Kung Lin, Chau-Peng Leong, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The major voiding problems in patients with CVA are urinary incontinence, frequency, urgency and retention. We tend to regard the stroke patients who have spontaneous voiding as being “normal”, however, some of these patients have occult incomplete emptying or silent urinary retention would not have been discovered until complication developed. We prospectively evaluated the bladder emptying status in stroke patients, and collected the data of brain CT or MRI, functional status, motor status, posture of urination and so on, to define the characteristics and risk factors of urinary retention after stoke. Eighty-six stroke patients, admitted to the rehabilitation department of CGMH …

The Development Of Non-Invasive Lumbar Spinal Mobility Transformation Model And Assessment Tools For Clinical Applications, My Lee, Wk Chiou, Yh Lee, Wj Chen, Yh Lin Jun 1995

The Development Of Non-Invasive Lumbar Spinal Mobility Transformation Model And Assessment Tools For Clinical Applications, My Lee, Wk Chiou, Yh Lee, Wj Chen, Yh Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Lumbar spinal flexion and extension motion was measured radiographically and from the back surface curvature (using motion analysis system) for evaluating lumbar spinal mobility (LSM). Twenty-four volunteers participated in this study and underwent lateral spinal radiographs and photographs in three postures (neutral, flexion and extension). The lumbar sacral angles (LSA) and the angles of each vertebral segment were obtained both from skin surface curvature and picture of X-ray. The results showed that the LSA and LSM remained the same either calculated based on Cobb angle or overly angle definition. To transform skin marker coordinates into corresponding vertebral body coordinates, a …

Is The Motor Point Better In Reproducibility Of Surface Emg Signal?, Alice May-Kuen Wong, Fuk-Tan Tang, Shiu-Ching Lee, Wen-Ko Chiou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The EMG signals acquired from acupoint Fu Tu (a motor point in rectus femoris) were reported to be more stable and reproducible than those from the middle point between greater trochanter to tibio-femoral junction of knee in standing position. It was different from the concept of better surface EMG signal from muscle belly than motor point. For studying whether the motor point is a better surface electrode location for stability and reproducibility of EMG signal, 6 normal subjects were examined at right quadriceps in isometric and isokinetic contractions by Cybex 340 dynamometer. The active electrodes of surface electromyography (S-EMG) were placed …

Low Back Pain In Chinese Pregnant Women, Ta-Shen Kuan, Tzung-Cheng Kuo, Kuo-Chuan Kuo, Tse-Chieh Hsueh Jun 1995

Low Back Pain In Chinese Pregnant Women, Ta-Shen Kuan, Tzung-Cheng Kuo, Kuo-Chuan Kuo, Tse-Chieh Hsueh

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This study is aimed at assessing ””Low back pain of pregnant women”” which had been neglected for a long time.Among 755 effective questionnaires, 452 (58.3% of the cases) suffered from low back pain during pregnancy. The average age was 28 +4.2 years. The severity of back pain, which was evaluated according to Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), lay mostly between 2 degree to 6 degree. The most frequent back pain pattern was soreness. As for location of back pain, low back took the most part, the buttock the second and the thigh the least. Related factors of backache included age, weeks …

Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures Presenting With An Acute Ileus-- A Casereport, Chin-Man Wang, Ji-Yih Chen, Choon-Khim Chong, Alice May-Kuen Wong Jun 1995

Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures Presenting With An Acute Ileus-- A Casereport, Chin-Man Wang, Ji-Yih Chen, Choon-Khim Chong, Alice May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

We report a 76year-old female of T11and T12 vertebral compression fracture, presenting with abdominal pain and acute ileus but minimal back symptom within 24hours of onset. The treatment was focused on the abdominal condition, exploratory lapartotmy was done with normal intra-abdominal organ, except diffuse moderate distention of intestines. Gallium-67scan was arranged to differentiate recent fromold fracture. The mechanism of thoracolumbar compression fractures presenting with an acute ileus is possible due to the retroperitoneal hemorrhage or structure change irritating the sympathetic chains which innervate the intestines. Treatment of acute ileus were reviewed and discussed.

Cervical Spondylosis With Unilateral Symmptomatic Radiculopathy And Radiculopathy On The Asymptomatic Side, Hwa-Lin Shou, Shei-Song Hsu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chan Hsu Jun 1995

Cervical Spondylosis With Unilateral Symmptomatic Radiculopathy And Radiculopathy On The Asymptomatic Side, Hwa-Lin Shou, Shei-Song Hsu, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chan Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This study has the following purposes: (1) to inquire the incidence of radiculopathy on the asymptomatic side in the cervical spondylotic patients with unilateral symptomatic radiculopathy. (2) to inquire the relationship between asymptomatic side and symptomatic side in the unilateral symptomatic radiculopathic patients due to cervical spondylosis. All subjects has been studied by motor and sensory nerve conduction test, and electromyography (EMG) for muscles supplied by roots from C-5 to T-l levels bilaterally. The results showed that the incidence of radiculopathy and the EMG abnormalities on the asymptomatic side correlated well with the EMG abnormalities on the symptomatic side, but …
