We present herein a case in which salmonella infected a pre-existing chronic subdural hematoma. A one-year-old male infant was admitted to our hospital with complaints of loss of consciousness, seizure, and left hemiparesis. Irrigation and drainage through two burr-holes were performed to the left frontoparietal region with the diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma according to CT findings. Operative findings revealed an infected subdural hematoma. Salmonella typhi grew in cultures of the subdural hematoma. According to the result of the culture antibiogram, ciprofloxacin therapy was initiated. Because of continued lethargy six days after the operation, a contrasted MRI was performed. The …

Recurrent Breast Abscess Caused By Corynebacterium Amycolatum And Rewiev Of The Literature, İsmet Özaydin, Mustafa Yildirim, İdri̇s Şahi̇n, Sami̇ Doğan

Corynebacterium species are an uncommon cause of breast abscess, and Corynebacterium amycolatum is rarely described in the literature. In the present case, we report recurrent breast abscess caused by C. amycolatum in a 39-year-old patient with normal immune function. Pathological diagnosis was granulomatous mastitis. The patient was treated with incision and drainage and ampicillin-sulbactam treatment. To our knowledge, this is the second report of breast abscess caused by C. amycolatum.

Aim: Homocysteine is known to inhibit endothelial cell proliferation, which is a key event in angiogenesis. Factors responsible for the presence or absence of coronary collateral circulation are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effect of plasma homocysteine level on the early formation of angiographically visible collaterals after acute myocardial infarction. Aim: Studies have shown that no booster dose was required at least 10 to 15 years after a primary vaccination for individuals who developed protective anti-hepatitis B surface (anti-HBs) antibodies. In this study, booster dose requirement for HBV after primary immunization was investigated. Materials and Methods: Seventeen individuals vaccinated previously were enrolled in the study. They had once developed a protective level of anti-HBs antibody after immunization and their anti-HBs titer had declined to an underprotective level. Aim: To evaluate the use of tumor markers in the differentiation of malignant and benign ovarian cysts in the postmenopausal period. Materials and Methods: The study included postmenopausal 46 patients with ovarian cysts that were assessed pre- and postoperatively using CA125 levels, ultrasonographic findings, and histopathological examination at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, Ankara Atatürk Training and Research Hospital. Results: Mean age of menopause onset was 46 years and mean duration of menopause was 11 years. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility of Fuhrman nuclear grading of renal cell carcinoma. Methods: Pathology slides from 46 cases of renal cell carcinoma were rescored by 2 pathologists according to the Fuhrman system. Both intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility were assessed using kappa statistics. Results: The initial Fuhrman grade was grade 1 in 4 of the cases (8.7%), grade 2 in 30 (65.2%), grade 3 in 11 (23.9%), and grade 4 in 1 (2.2%). A 13-year-old girl presented with a three-month history of generalized blisters on her body following a traumatic injury to her leg with a piece of wood while farming. The lesions were hemorrhagic, itchy and tender on pressure. The patient was non-diabetic, non-leukemic, non-neutropenic, and not previously on immunosuppressive drugs, nor was there any evidence of immunosuppression. Culture and microscopic examination of scrapings from the skin lesions revealed growth of a Mucor spp. She was initially placed on potassium iodide and responded well for about a month, then relapsed. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole monotherapy.

Linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis (LWNH) is a reticulate pigmentary disorder with a sporadic occurrence, generally representing a genetic mosaicism. In this case, we describe a two-month-old girl with trisomy 13, who presented with various systemic anomalies such as congenital ventricular septal defect, microcephaly, auricular deformities, flatness of nasal root, overlapping fingers, umbilical hernia, and LWNH. G-banding chromosomal analyses were performed on cultured peripheral blood lymphocytes of the patient and the parents. The karyotype of the patient was 47, XX,+13[100], with no mosaicism. Background: Pilomatricoma is a rare, benign adnexal tumor differentiating toward elements of the hair matrix and shaft. It typically presents as a solitary, deep, dermal nodule. In addition, bullous changes can be rarely seen. Methods: A 16-year-old girl with firm, mobile, multilobule and non-tender mass that has a soft, hemorrhagic blister-like formation on the left infraclavicular region is described. Results: The histopathologic findings were consistent with pilomatricoma. In the dermis above the tumor, there were numerous dilated lymphatic and blood vessels. Malignant infantile osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a rare inherited bone disease characterized by reduced or dysregulated activity of osteoclasts, which results in generalized osteosclerosis. This leads to abnormal bone marrow cavity formation and to the clinical signs and symptoms of bone marrow failure and nerve compression. Symptoms related to early or late hypocalcemia may appear as the first presentation of MIOP in a newborn. We present a 14-day-old boy with neonatal hypocalcaemia due to MIOP.

A 37-year-old male patient with fever, mild respiratory distress, diffuse goiter, and hepatosplenomegaly was admitted to our hospital. Clinical and laboratory findings showed that he had recurrent respiratory tract infections-namely bronchiectasis-due to common variable immunodeficiency disease (CVID) and AA-type amyloid deposition in the thyroid gland. Although recurrent infections as a consequence of inadequate gammaglobulin (IVIG) substitution therapy are regarded as the main cause of the development of amyloidosis, amyloidosis in a patient with hypo/agammaglobulinemia is extremely rare. Immunosuppression facilitates varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation in immunocompromised patients. Atypical presentation such as disseminated disease of herpes zoster infection has been described in immunosuppressed patients. One of the best choices of therapy in herpes zoster infection is acyclovir, but long-term therapy may cause resistance to it. In this report a disseminated herpes zoster infection is described in a patient with T cell lymphoma after acyclovir/valacyclovir therapy. The infection was irresponsive to acyclovir and valacyclovir and we were unable to control the infection because it was not possible to obtain foscarnet and the patient died due to Staphylococcus epidermis sepsis.

Aim: To investigate annexin A2 (ANXA2), annexin A7 (ANXA7), and annexin A11 (ANXA11) expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Although overexpression of ANXA2 has been reported in HNSCC, there are no studies on ANXA7 or ANXA11 in the same region. Materials and Methods: ANXA2, ANXA7, and ANXA11 were immunohistochemically studied in paraffin-embedded sections obtained from 43 patients with HNSCC. Aim: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been used for many years due to their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. They have also been used for postoperative analgesia. We aimed to study the effects of etofenamate, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on the healing of colonic anastomoses in rats. Materials and methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. Resection and anastomosis were performed on the distal colon. Aim: To analyze the current practice of neonatal conjunctivitis (ophthalmia neonatorum) prophylaxis in Turkey. Materials and methods: A standard questionnaire that collected information regarding the name and location of the clinical setting, the name and dosage of the medication used to prevent neonatal conjunctivitis (if there was any), and the department and preference concerning which health workers should administer the agent (gynecologist, pediatrician, or midwife) was prepared and administered to 24 university hospitals as well as to 24 registered community hospitals that had both pediatric and obstetric units. Effect Of Docking And Diet Energy On Carcass Fat Characteristics In Fat-Tailed Baluchian Sheep, Ali̇ Moharrery

Effects of docking on carcass fat characteristics were studied in fat-tailed sheep. Male lambs were randomly divided into 2 groups. One group was docked after birth using rubber rings, and the tails of the other group were left intact (control). After weaning, 20 lambs from each group were divided into 2 subgroups; one subgroup was fed with a normal energy diet (10.25 MJ/kg ME) and the other one with a high-energy diet (11.42 MJ/kg ME) for 84 days. Two experiments were conducted to study the silage characteristics and nutritive value of Damascus rose extraction residue (RER) which is a by-product remained after the extraction of rose water in some parts of Iran. In the first experiment, RER was ensiled together with different amounts of effluent absorbents, using a completely randomised design with 10 treatments and 4 replicates. In the second experiment, RER was ensiled together with dry sugar beet pulp, wheat straw, and limestone. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of phosalone on the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. The effect was assessed on the basis of the results of acute toxicity tests and comparison of results of haematological examination of a control and an experimental group exposed to phosalone. The 96 h LC_{50} is the basic value in the acute toxicity test and it was 0.26 mg/L for phosalone against the test fish. A study was conducted on the impact of aflatoxin (AF) and mycotoxin binders on immunization against Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) and Infectious Bronchitis (IB) in chickens. Gaoyou duck (Chinese indigenous breed) is famous for double-yolked egg. In the present study, SNP of prolactin (PRL) gene intron 1 of Gaoyou duck was detected by PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing. The results indicated that there were 2 Dra I recognition sites in intron 1 of the PRL gene, but only 1 was of polymorphism. A T/C mutation at the position of the 1326 bp of the PRL gene was found by DNA sequencing, and resulted in 3 genotypes AA, AB, and BB. The frequencies of genotype BB and allele B were the highest. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in the eastern Anatolian border province of Van and its villages and to collect the preliminary data required for programs for the prevention and control of this zoonotic disease. The tuberculin test was performed on 210 cattle. Nasal swab and milk samples were obtained from the animals tested. Three cattle that had a positive tuberculin test also tested positive for the DNA target, a 580-bp fragment of IS6110 specific for members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. This study was carried out to determine the effects of oxalic acid (OA) on reducing Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) populations in honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies in the fall. Twenty honeybee colonies, in wooden Langstroth hives, were used in this experiment. Average Varroa infestation levels (%) of the OA and control groups were 25.87% and 24.57% on adult workers before the treatments. The OA treatments were applied twice, on 3 November and 13 November 2006.
