We have modified a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure for homocysteine assay using 7-fluoro-2, 1, 3-benzoxadiazole-4-sulfonamide (ABD-F) pre-column derivatization. In this study, the thiol compounds were liberated from plasma proteins by reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol (BME) and derivatized with a thiol-specific fluoregenic marker, ABD-F. The derivatives were separated by reversed-phase HPLC on a Hypersil C 18 column (4.6 x 150 mm; 5 µ) using isocratic elution with 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 6.0 containing 8% methanol and fluorescence detection. Elevated plasma homocysteine concentration either in fasting state or after methionine loading is an independent risk factor for vascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fasting total homocysteine (tHcy) and post-methionine load tHcy in healthy control subjects and in patients with angiographically defined coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic importance of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) in lambs with white muscle disease (WMD) and the changes in some serum parameters (glucose, creatinine, total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride, Ca, inorganic P, Na, K, Cl, AST, ALT, ALP, LDH and CPK) in healthy and white muscle diseased lambs. A total of 426 serum samples were examined from 9 broiler and 7 broiler breeder flocks showing clinical signs of swollen head syndrome (SHS). Turkey rhinotracheitis virus antibodies in 8 broiler flocks were between 31.8 and 75.9% and in broiler breeder flocks between 5.4 and 48.6%, with a commercial ELISA. Typical clinical symptoms were observed for SHS in broilers and broiler breeders. During the study, turkey flocks showing clinical signs were not detected. Determination Of Fatty Acid Compositions Of Five Different Tilapia Species From The Çukurova (Adana/Turkey) Region, Mehmet Çeli̇k, Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe

The fatty acid compositions of Tilapia rendalli, T. zilli and Oreochromis aurea reared in cages located in Seyhan Dam Lake, O. niloticus reared in freshwater ponds and Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were compared. The fatty acid levels of Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). Total \omega-3 fatty acid values were significantly different for all groups and the highest level were found in Tilapia spp. (p < 0.05). The ratio of \omega-3/ \omega-6 for Tilapia spp., O. aurea, T. rendalli, T. zilli and O. niloticus were 1.95, 1.37, 1.29, 1.21 and 1.12, respectively.

At the end of the spawning season, semen was collected without anesthesia by abdominal massage from 37 rainbow trout according to different age groups. In collected semens, color, volume, motility, activity time (duration of motility), concentration, total spermatozoa and pH were recorded. Furthermore, body weight and body length were measured and correlations beetween spermatological properties and these parameters were assessed. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of age, sex and season change on electrocardiograms of Van cats. Thirty-eight (male and female) healthy Van cats, 3-15 months old were used. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) and heart radiographs were obtained from cats seperately in summer, autumn, winter and spring. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of maturity on the range quality and weight gain of male and female lambs, and the time at which supplementation is needed. The experiment was conducted at TİGEM Altındere Agricultural experiment station. Our purpose in this study was to investigate and compare the morphological relationship between the true chordae tendineae (CT) and the false chordae tendineae (FCT). One hundred and forty-seven hearts (8 humans, 23 dogs, 91 sheep, 25 goats) were investigated in our study. In terms of CT number, while the difference between humans and sheep and goats, and dogs and sheep and goats was significant statistically (p < 0.05), the difference between humans and dogs was less significant than the others. The difference between sheep and goats was not significant statistically (p > 0.05). The faeces of 464 horses and 110 donkeys were cOllected and examined by the flotation, sedimentation and Baermenn-Wetzel methods in a parasitology laboratory. The examinations showed that 327 of 464 (70.5%) horses and 85 of 110 (77.3%) donkeys were infected with the following species: in horses, Strongylidae sp. 62.7%, Strongyloides westeri 5.8%, Parascaris equorum 3.2%, Anoplocephalidae sp. 2.4 %, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.6%, and Paranoplocephala mamillana 0.2%; and in donkeys; Strongylidae sp. 72.7%, Strongyloides westeri 13.6%, Parascaris equorum 2.7%, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.9% and Dicrocoelium dendriticum 0.9%.

In this study, 627 live freshwater mussels collected from the Koçkale and Pertek regions of Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. Homogenates prepared from the soft tissue of mussels, after pre-enrichment in Rappaport Vasilliadis, were inoculated onto Brilliant Green Phenol Red Lactose agar and Salmonella-Shigella selective media. Biochemical tests and DNA extraction were carried out on isolates suspected of containing Salmonella. Quality changes in common guitarfish fillets vacuum packed and non-vacuum packed in polyethylene material were investigated during 6 months' cold storage at -18 ^oC. Total yield of the common guitar fish was around 65%. pH, TVB-N, crude protein, moisture, crude ash and fat were 6.50-6.82, 19.87-48.62 mg/100 g, 16.63-22.63%, 75.83-79.88%, 1.00-1.65% and 0.2-0.7%, respectively. This study sought to determine the roles and effectiveness of findings obtained from radiographic examinations of lungs in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases and to place radiographic findings into routine practice in dogs and cats. Fifty-eight dogs and 27 cats of different breeds, sexes and ages suspected of having pulmonary disease were used as the study materials after clinical examination and anamnesis. In this study, the matrix (M) gene of the RBOK vaccine strain of rinderpest (RPV) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into TOPO^R XL cloning vector. For this purpose, Vero cells were infected with the RBOK vaccine strain of RPV and total RNA was obtained from the infected cells. cDNA of the matrix gene was obtained by reverse transcription from the total RNA. This study was carried out to determine the effect of transcervical and intravaginal artificial insemination on the pregnancy rate in dogs. Semen was collected by the massage method from dogs brought to our department. Collected semen was examined in the laboratory and stored in liquid nitrogen after dilution with Tris extender. During the study 31 bitches brought to our department for artificial insemination were used. One of the bitches was not evaluated. In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. Intrauterine swabs taken from 56 mares with metritis, and semen samples and swabs of urethral fossa from 27 stallions were investigated. In this study, Rinderpest virus (RPV) recombinant hemagglutinine protein (rH) fused with protein A region of Staphylococcus aureus was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified by IgG affinity chromatography. rH protein was also used to establish enzyme immunoassay. Therefore, to prevent IgG binding to the protein A the wells coated with the rH proteins were blocked by human serum. Afterwards, RPV antigens were added to the wells to evaluate this assay. This study was carried out to investigate the fertility traits, survival rate and growth characteristics of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka B_1) genotypes. Karayaka and Bafra genotypes are raised in the Black Sea region of Turkey. In the study, fertility results for Karayaka and Bafra were determined to be 92.3 and 93.7% for birth rates, and 1.08 and 1.78 for litter size, respectively. The survival rates of Karayaka and Bafra lambs at weaning (90 days) were 93.6 and 91.9%, respectively. Microalbuminuria is considered to be an early indicator of diabetic nephropathy. We have previously reported the establishment of A-HAlb/98 hybridoma secreting monoclonal antibody that specifically recognizes human serum albumin (HSA). In this report, an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using this antibody for the measurement of urinary albumin (UA) and UA was examined in 24 different samples. In this study, quantification levels were investigated to define alterations in the expression of the FLI1 gene on acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), which is characterized by a reciprocal t(15,17) translocation of fusing the PML gene to the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RAR alpha) gene. The FLI1 gene plays an important role in several signal transduction pathways, and is involved in the normal regulation of myeloid hematopoiesis and leukomogenesis.
