Contralateral White Noise-Induced Enhancement In The Guinea Pigõs Mlr: A Possible Link To Direc- Tional Hearing, Cüneyt Göksoy, Rezzan Utkuçal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The evoked potential components in a time window of 10-50 ms following an acoustic stimulus are called middle latency responses (MLRs). It is known that an amplitude enlargement occurs in guinea pig MLRs to monaural clicks when continuous white noise is applied to the other ear. This study was undertaken to see whether this enlargement is due simply to an overall, generalised effect of contralateral white noise (WN), or whether it may have some connection to directional hearing. Recordings were made from chronic guinea pig preparations with epidural electrodes in the temporal regions. Parallel to the results in the literature, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This study was performed to compare the effects of 4 different hormone replacement therapy (HRT) protocols on certain cardiovascular risk factors. Eighty- nine postmenopausal women were treated with oral conjugated estrogens, transdermal 17 beta-E2, cyclic oral E2-17- valerate+cyproterone acetate (E2-17-V+CA) or tibolone. Blood pressure (BP) measurements, fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and triglyceride levels at the 12th month were compared with the pretreatment values in each treatment group. There were no significant changes in the systolic BP, FBG, serum total and LDL-cholesterol levels in any group. Diastolic BP …

Hvj-Liposome-Mediated Gene Transfer To Healing Rat Meniscal Tissue, İlhan Özkan, Norimasa Nakamura, Konsei Shino, Takashi Natsu-Ume, Tetsuya Tomita, Yasufumi Kaneda, Takahiro Ochi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The success rate of a repaired torn meniscus is not more than 70%. Gene transfer to healing soft tissues appears to be a feasible method for manipulating the healing process. In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of gene transfer to meniscal tissue we tried to transfer a reporter gene ( Echerichia coli, b-galactosidase gene) by using HVJ-liposome mediated gene transfer. After performing complete radial tear on the medial meniscus of fifty 14-week-old male Wistar rats, HVJ-liposomes with DNA were injected into the femoral artery of 15 rats and into the knee joint of the other 15 rats. HVJ- liposomes …

The patients were randomly selected and received a continuous infusion of dopamine, 3 µg/kg/min (Group I), mannitol, 1 mg/kg/h (Group II), no medication (Group III) before the induction of anaesthesia. Urine N- acetyl-\beta-D-glucosaminidase activities, serum and urinary creatinine and BUN were determined preoperatively after aortic cross- clamping, and on the first and second postoperative days. Changes in urine N-acetyl- …

Mechanical And Thermal Properties Of Hydroxyapatite-Impregnated Bone Cement, Kemal Şerbetçi̇, Feza Korkusuz, Nesri̇n Hasirci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Self-curing acrylic cements, consisting mainly of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), are widely used in dentistry and orthopedic surgery. One of the major side effects of the standard PMMA application is tissue necrosis at the bone-cement interface due to the rise of temperature during the polymerization reaction. This may also lead to aseptic loosening over time. Therefore, intense research is being carried out in the development of bone cements with new compositions. In this study, the aim was to develop new bone cement compositions that would have low setting temperature and high mechanical strength and be comparable with the commercially available ones. For …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Over the past decade, there has been considerable growth in interest in the application of stress management techniques for the preparation of patients needing to undergo noxious medical procedures. Here, we studied state-trait anxiety in women awaiting three different radiological examinations; abdominal ultrasonography, mammography, and hysterosalpingography, which involved various degrees of intrusiveness, and low, intermediate, and high levels of pain and physical/emotional discomfort respectively. We aimed to investigate whether the degree of anxiety corresponded to the level of invasiveness. In addition, we examined the impact of demographic variables on the degree of anxiety and conducted three months of follow-up measurements. …

Levels of aerobic mezophilic bacteria, coliform, Escherichia coli and the incidence of Salmonella were determined prechill and postchill. The level of coliform and E. coli were reduced by immersion chilling (P0.05) but there was an increase in Salmonella incidence in carcasses exiting the immersion chiller indicating that this may be the point of most significant cross contamination in broiler processing plants. Experiments on microbial decontamination of poultry carcasses with lactic acid were performed. The microbial levels of poultry carcasses were reduced significantly …
