Single nucleotide polymorphisms of the 5' regulatory region of the FSHR gene were detected in 3 goat breeds (Jining Grey, Boer, and Inner Mongolia Cashmere) by the polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism method, and its effects on litter size in Jining Grey goats were also evaluated. Concerning primer P1, 2 genotypes (AA and BB) were detected in Boer goats, while only the AA genotype was identified in Jining Grey and Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats. Sequencing revealed a T->A transversion at the 26th position and an A->C transversion at the 61st position of the amplified region in genotype BB …

The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of mycoplasmas in the respiratory system of sheep and goat populations managed under extensive production systems. Specific culture and polymerase chain reaction techniques were performed on a total of 88 lung tissue samples and 142 nasal swabs obtained from multiple herds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 29 samples (12.6%) were found to be positive for mycoplasmas. Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae was detected in the nasal swabs and lungs of affected sheep (n = 19) and in the lungs of asymptomatic goat kids (n = 2), while M. arginini (n = …

Epibulbar Melanocytoma In A Goat, Annahita Rezaie, Hannaneh Golshahi, Mohammad Rahim Haji Hajikolaie

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Melanocytoma is a benign tumor arising from the melanocytes. A 2-year-old female crossbreed goat that was suffering from respiratory insufficiency, emaciation, depression diffuse corneal opacity, and anemia was euthanized. There was a mass on the dorsal interface of the cornea and sclera of the left eye. It was raised, dark, and 2 mm in diameter. The histopathologic evaluation revealed melanocytoma and immunolabeling for Melan-A was positive. According to gross and microscopic evaluations, epibulbar melanocytoma was diagnosed and the authors think that the present case is the first recorded case of epibulbar melanocytoma in a goat.

Stage-Specific Developmental Gene Expression Of Goat Preimplantation Embryos Produced In Vitro, Y. J. Li, H. Ao, G. J. Sun, L. Zhang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Single preimplantation embryo mRNA differential display was used to study the gene expression of 2-cell,4-cell, and 8-16-cell stage goat embryos produced in vitro, and 16 different stage specific bands in total were screened. In these specific bands, 5 were in 2-cell stage, 4 were in 4-cell stage, and 7 were in 8-16-cell stage, respectively. The sequencing and alignment results suggested that 4 differential expression bands were homologous with human petidylarginine deiminase (PAD), bovine insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP3), bovine NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex 4 (NDUFA4), and dog cyclin B3 (CCNB3) genes, respectively. All these 4 genes had …

Congenital Cardiac Defect In A Pygmy Goat (Capra Hircus), Fulvio Laus, Ilenia Copponi, Matteo Cerquetella, Alessandro Fruganti

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Congenital cardiac defects are anatomic conditions present at birth. Few references to such conditions in goats are available in the current scientific literature. This report describes, for the first time, a congenital cardiac disease clinically characterized by polypnea from birth and exercise intolerance in a 2-month-old pygmy goat. An atrioventricular dysplasia known as Ebstein's anomaly, an atrial septal defect, and a mild subaortic stenosis were ultrasonographically diagnosed.

Double-Layer Mesh Hernioplasty For Repairing Umbilical Hernias In 10 Goats*, Jose M. Vilar, Juan A. Corbera, Giuseppe Spinella

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Umbilical hernias in goats are uncommon and can vary in their etiology and management. Hernioplasty can be done by closing the abdominal wall with a horizontal mattress pattern using absorbable sutures. However, larger defects (hernial ring size >3 cm) generally require the use of prosthetic materials that allow for a tension-free repair. In this study, 10 young female goats with umbilical hernias and hernial ring sizes ranging from 7-10 cm in width were treated using a double-layer polypropylene mesh. An ultrasonographic examination was performed to assess healing and connective tissue production.

Recovered oocytes from both sources were cultured in microdrops of IVM medium in the presence of CO2 (5%) at 38.5 °C in a CO2 incubator for 27 h. The ICSI was performed with immobilized sperm on the lid of a culture dish (35 mm) under an …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists atipamezole and yohimbine were used to antagonize medetomidine-induced sedation in 6-8-month-old native breed female goats. Intramuscular injection of medetomidine at the dose rate of 40 \mu g/kg body weight induced sedation and recumbency within 10-20 min in the goats. After recumbency, the goats were injected with saline (5 ml) (control group), atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg), or yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg) via the jugular vein. The duration of recumbency in the control group was 90 ± 9 min (mean ± SE). The effects of sedation continued in the control group goats even after regaining the righting reflex and standing. …
