Clarifying Analysis And Interpretation In Grounded Theory: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen W. Scott, Dana M. Howell
Clarifying Analysis And Interpretation In Grounded Theory: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen W. Scott, Dana M. Howell
Dana Howell
Although qualitative methods, grounded theory included, cannot be reduced to formulaic procedures, research tools can clarify the process. The authors discuss two instruments supporting grounded theory analysis and interpretation using two examples from doctoral students. The conditional relationship guide contextualizes the central phenomenon and relates categories linking structure with process. The reflective coding matrix serves as a bridge to the final phase of grounded theory analysis, selective coding and interpretation, and, ultimately, to substantive theory generation.

The purpose of this ethnonursing research study was to discover the care expressions, patterns, and practices of nursing faculty related to teaching culture care within the environmental context of urban and rural baccalaureate nursing programs in the Southeastern United States. The goal of the study was to discover faculty caring that facilitated teaching nursing students to provide culturally congruent and competent care. Four major themes with universal and diverse patterns which supported the themes were discovered. The themes were faculty care as embedded in Christian religious values, beliefs, and practices; faculty teaching culture care without an organizing conceptual framework; faculty …

Life Trajectories Of Female Child Abuse Survivors Thriving In Adulthood, Sandra Thomas, J.M. Hall
Life Trajectories Of Female Child Abuse Survivors Thriving In Adulthood, Sandra Thomas, J.M. Hall
Sandra Thomas
A narrative study of thriving adult female survivors of childhood maltreatment was undertaken to discover how they had achieved success. Life trajectory patterns, turning points, and setbacks were identified. Data consisted of 81 interview transcripts derived from a series of three interviews, spaced over 6 to 12 months, with 27 survivors. The childhood abuse was intrafamilial, beginning as early as infancy and continuing, in most cases, until participants left home. The onset and pace of the healing trajectory were quite variable, including a roller-coaster pattern as well as patterns of slow, steady progress and continued struggle. Four types of redemption …
How Patients And Nurses Experience The Acute Care Psychiatric Environment, M.M. Shattell, M. Andes, Sandra Thomas
How Patients And Nurses Experience The Acute Care Psychiatric Environment, M.M. Shattell, M. Andes, Sandra Thomas
Sandra Thomas
The concept of the therapeutic milieu was developed when patients’ hospitalizations were long, medications were few, and oneto- one nurse–patient interactions were the norm. However, it is not clear how the notion of ‘therapeutic milieu’ is experienced in American acute psychiatric environments today. This phenomenological study explored the experience of patients and nurses in an acute care psychiatric unit in the USA, by asking them, ‘What stands out to you about this psychiatric hospital environment?’ Three figural themes emerged, contextualized by time, which was a source of stress to both groups: for patients there was boredom, and for nurses, pressure …

Disparities In Use Of Mental Health And Substance Abuse Services By Asian And Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander Women, Van M. Ta Park, H. S. Juon, A. C. Gielen, D. Steinwachs, A. Duggan
Van M. Ta Park
The purpose of this study was to determine if disparities exist in lifetime utilization of mental health/substance abuse services among Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) and white mothers. The study sample was comprised of mothers assessed to be at-risk (n = 491) and not at-risk (n = 218) for child maltreatment in the Hawaii Healthy Start Program study. Multiple logistic regression models were used to test the effects of predisposing, need, and enabling factors on utilization of services. Results revealed that, among mothers with depressive symptoms, compared with whites, Asians and NHOPI were significantly less likely to have received …

Lessons Learned: Acting As Guardian/Special Master In The Bad Newz Kennels Case, Rebecca J. Huss
Rebecca J. Huss
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia appointed Rebecca Huss as the guardian/special master of the pit bulls that were the subject of the case against Michael Vick relating to dog fighting. In April of 2007, the Surry County Sheriff's Department seized fifty-three pit bulls from Vick's home in Virginia. According to the facts set forth in the plea agreement, dogs on the property were killed and subjected to violent dog fights. Similar to human victims of abuse, the dogs needed someone to represent their best interests during litigation. Huss was in charge of determining whether …

Managing Heteronormativity And Homonegativity In Athletic Training: In And Beyond The Classroom, Suanne Maurer-Starks, Heather L. Clemons, Shannon Whalen
Suanne Maurer-Starks
Context: As an allied health professional working in various settings, an athletic trainer (AT) is responsible for the health care of a highly diverse population. More often than not, this diversity is defined by the visible, such as race or sex. However, diversity encompasses many more variables than these observable factors and includes sexual orientation. Efforts have been made to educate ATs about issues related to sex and race; however, sexual orientation typically has not been addressed, although ATs have treated and will continue to treat lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) patients.
Objective: To introduce ATs (educators and practicing clinicians) …

Effect Of Short-Term Failure Versus Nonfailure Training On Lower Body Muscular Endurance, Jeffrey Willardson, John Emmett, Jon A. Oliver, Eadric Bressel
Jeffrey Willardson
This study compared failure versus nonfailure training with equated intensity and volume on lower body muscular endurance in trained men. Methods: Each subject performed one lower body workout per week for 6 weeks; the Failure group performed 3 sets of the squat, leg curl, and leg extension exercises to the point of voluntary exhaustion, while the Nonfailure group performed 4 sets for each of these exercises, but with a submaximal number of repetitions that did not allow failure to occur on any set. All subjects performed a pre- and postintervention muscular endurance test that involved 3 sets each for the …
