Zika virus (ZIKV) is associated with severe neurodeve- lopmental impairments in human fetuses, including microencephaly. Previous reports examining neural progenitor tropism of ZIKV in organoid and animal models did not address whether the virus infects all neural progenitors uniformly. To explore this, ZIKV was injected into the neural tube of 2-day-old chicken embryos, resulting in nonuniform periventricular infec- tion 3 days later. Recurrent foci of intense infection were present at specific signaling centers that influ- ence neuroepithelial patterning at a distance through secretion of morphogens. We demonstrate a novel inorganic-organic crystalline nanoconstruct, where gold atoms were imbedded in the crystal lattices as defects of camptothecin nanocrystals, suggesting its potential use as simultaneous agents for cancer therapy and bioimaging. The incorporation of gold, a potential computed tomography (CT) contrast agent, in the nanocrystals of camptothecin was detected by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and further quantified by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES). Due to gold's high attenuation coefficient, only a relatively small amount needs to be present in order to create a good noise-to-contrast ratio in CT imaging. The imbedded …

MicroRNA-223 is known as a myeloid-enriched anti-inflammatory microRNA that is dysregulated in numerous inflammatory conditions. Here, we report that neutrophilic inflammation (wound response) is augmented in miR-223-deficient zebrafish, due pri- marily to elevated activation of the canonical nuclear factor kB (NF-kB) pathway. NF-kB over-activation is restricted to the basal layer of the surface epithelium, although miR-223 is detected throughout the epithe- lium and in phagocytes. Not only phagocytes but also epithelial cells are involved in miR-223-medi- ated regulation of neutrophils’ wound response and NF-kB activation. Exposure to extreme environments is both mentally and physically taxing, leading to suboptimal performance and even life-threatening emergencies. Physiological and cognitive monitoring could provide the earliest indicator of performance decline and inform appropriate therapeutic intervention, yet little research has explored the relationship between these markers in strenuous settings. The Rim-to-Rim Wearables at the Canyon for Health (R2RWATCH) study is a research project at Sandia National Laboratories funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to identify which physiological and cognitive phenomena collected by non-invasive wearable devices are the most related to performance in extreme environments. Several studies have confirmed that the gaze velocity of the human eye can be utilized as a behavioral biometric or personalized biomarker. In this study, we leverage the local feature representation capacity of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for eye gaze velocity analysis as the basis for biometric identification of radiologists performing breast cancer screening. Using gaze data collected from 10 radiologists reading 100 mammograms of various diagnoses, we compared the performance of a CNN-based classification algorithm with two deep learning classifiers, deep neural network and deep belief network, and a previously presented hidden Markov model classifier. Objective:

To evaluate student perceptions of a service-learning experience for potential implementation in the curriculum.

Method:

A new 3-week intensive elective course was piloted in the Spring of 2017 at Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Seven third professional year students were included in the pilot and were divided into three groups. Each group of 2-3 students was assigned to one of 3 predetermined community partner sites. Students were taught how to perform a needs assessment and then designed a project targeted to improve safety at their site. There are 6 million people living with HIV; 70% reside in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Furthermore, 1.1 million deaths occur due to opportunistic infections (OIs) that can be minimized with antiretroviral therapy. In Kenya, Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is an especially debilitating OI that presents with dermatologic lesions; magnifying the stigma that patients with HIV face physically and psychosocially. Dermatology research is underway to determine the effectiveness of an unna boot (medicated, layered compression dressing) to speed the healing of these lesions with anecdotal success. After attending this session, participants will be appreciate the power of music and witness the level of engagement that street youth in a resource-limited country have as they unite behind a common goal. Street youth in Eldoret, Kenya are at a high risk of experiencing psychological conditions like Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with contributing factors including homelessness, an unstable family structure, and exposure to alcoholism and drug abuse in parent figures. Music therapy has shown benefits in children to alleviate and manage some of the symptoms of emotional disturbances. The goal was to create a sustainable music program in Eldoret, Kenya …
