Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a severe hyperinflammatory condition characterized by fever, systemic inflammation, and multiorgan dysfunction that manifests late in the course of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). MIS-C generally occurs 2 to 6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The incidence of MIS-C is unknown, although it appears to occur in less than 1 percent of children with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. MIS-C has overlapping clinical features of toxic shock syndrome and Kawasaki disease, although the pathogenesis is unclear.
