OBJECTIVE: To describe the etiology, functional status and short term outcome of patients with pituitary lesions (PL).

METHODS: Brain or pituitary MRI reports of 3753 patients were analyzed for PL over the period of 2000 to 2007, done at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Karachi, Pakistan. MRIs with reported PL and all those ordered by Endocrinologists with or without pituitary abnormalities, were included in the analysis. This made a total of 338 (9%) MRI reports. Background:The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and practices of primary care physicians in diagnosis and management of Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori) infection in developing country.

Methods: This convenient sample based, cross sectional study was conducted in primary care physicians of Karachi, Pakistan from March 2008 to August 2008 through a pretested self-designed questionnaire, which contained 11 items pertaining to H. pylori route of transmission, diagnosis, indication for testing, treatment options, follow up and source of information.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility and cost effectiveness of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) as part of stroke workup in a developing country.

METHODS: All patients over the age of 14 years with acute stroke were prospectively enrolled in Aga Khan University stroke databank from August 1999 to May 2001 (22 month period). All patients were evaluated by a consultant neurologist and underwent standard stroke work up such as neuroimaging, TTE, carotid doppler sonography and blood tests e.g. serum glucose, lipid profile, blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. Background: Systolic heart failure (SHF), particularly when requiring hospital admission carries a poor prognosis. There is a paucity of data in Indo-Asians on outcomes of SHF, among whom the burden of cardiovascular disease is consistently rising. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and predictors of mortality and morbidity amongst patients admitted with new-onset SHF at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan.

Psychomotor Skills For The Undergraduate Medical Curriculum In A Developing Country--Pakistan, Rashida Ahmed, Zoon Naqvi, Ineke Wolfhagen

Objective: To identify essential psychomotor skills for all the medical graduates of an undergraduate programme in Pakistan.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-five physicians practising in a tertiary care centre and ninety primary care physicians used a Likert's scale, ranging from "very essential" to"not required at all", to mark 99 psychomotor skills in the undergraduate medical curriculum in Pakistan.
Results: Overall the opinions of both the groups about the essential skills matched except for a few areas.

OBJECTIVES: Peer review of trauma deaths can be used to evaluate the efficacy of trauma systems. The objective of this study was to estimate teh proportion of preventable trauma deaths and the factors contributing to poor outcome using peer review in a tertiary care hospital in a developing country.

In order to determine the prevalence of glucose intolerance in pregnancy, 1267 consecutive women attending the antenatal clinic of the Aga khan University Medical Centre were subjected to a 75g glucose challenge followed 2hr later by plasma glucose determination irrespective of gestation on the first antenatal visit. The test was repeated at 28-32 weeks of gestation if the patients had an abnormal initial screen at < 28 weeks gestation and a normal glucose tolerance test on diagnostic follow-up and for those who had a risk factor for gestational diabetes and a normal initial screen at < 28 weeks gestation. The glucose challenge test was abnormal (2hr plasma glucose> 1 40mg%) in 8.6% of the screened population. Follow-up oral glucose tolerance test on these patients revealed a prevalence of 3.2% of gestationat diabetes and 1.9% of impaired glucose tolerance test based on the modified …
