Dementia refers to a range of disorders characterized by declining memory, multiple cognitive deficits and eventual mortality due to progressive and irreversible brain damage1. Disease entities comprising dementia characteristically affect mainly the geriatric population. Together, they constitute a major component of global disease burden in general and geriatric disease burden in particular2. In 2005, it was estimated that 24.3 million people in the world were living with dementia; 4.6 million cases have been added each year ever since3. Epilepsy is a disease that affects more than 65 million people around the world. In Pakistan prevalence of epilepsy is 9.99/1000 people, thus around 2million people in Pakistan suffering from epilepsy1,2.The prevalence in children is much higher 14.6/10003,4,5.Prof. Charles Newton in the lancet quotes 50,000 deaths from epilepsy annually in the US6. The death rate in the developing countries is much higher. The exact figures are difficult to assess due to lack of epidemiological surveys and incomplete data collection. However it is thought that the number will be greater and considered at least twice …

Asymptomatic Unilateral Cerebellar Hypoplasia In An Adult Patient - A Unique Presentation., Pari Gul, Bushra Rehan, Saleha Anwar, Ambreen Majeed, Ayub Mansoor

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia is a relatively rare malformation. We report a case of 54 year old female patient who presented with single episode of sudden unconsciousness and slurring of speech. Imaging finding suggests the diagnosis of unilateral cerebellar hypoplasia. The patient recovered with conservative management probably because the symptoms were due to Transient ischemic attack not due to hypoplasia.

We present a lady who developed confusion, paresthesiae and visual hallucinations while on tacrolimus following a renal transplant. Her tacrolimus level was high and she improved on stopping the drug. This case highlights the reversible encephalopathy induced by tacrolimus.

Efficacy Of Interferon In Multiple Sclerosis, Evangelos A, , Nikolaos Ch. Syrmos, Anastasios Orologas

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Introduction of interferon b-1b in the therapeutic strategy against Multiple Sclerosis has resulted in a great amelioration of treatment in various terms. Relapse rates, delaying progression of the activity, improvement of imaging outcomes as well as reduction of disease activity itself consist great achievements against a pathological condition that challenged medical effectiveness throughout decades. Two recombinant human IFN-1a and an IFN-1b preparations have been proved effected and well tolerated. We reviewed the most important literature concerning pharmacodynamics, medical efficacy, tolerability and adverse effects of interferon-b usage. In parallel, despite the wide range of trials referring to INF-b treatment, we tried …

Review of the studies done in this region, dose not provide a detail account of patients understanding about the disease. Majority of patients when interviewed in clinics do not know the right answer to cause, level of desired sugar, possible complication. Material and methods: Hospital-based cross-sectional KAP study was conducted on diabetic patients visiting the diabetic clinic in two tertiary care Hospitals and a diabetic poly clinic in different areas of Karachi during the month of September 2012. Glue sniffing neuropathy commonly known as n-hexane neuropathy. It is well documented that industrial exposure to n-hexane causes neuropathy, however it is less well recognized that inhalation of n-hexane present in the vapors can also cause neuropathy However such patients are not seen that frequently. The acute worsening also generates differential diagnosis of GBS. Most of literature is reported from west .We report such case for the first time from Saudi Arabia. Not All Asymptomatic Carotid Plaques Are Equal: Some Require Intervention, Iram Naz Jan 2013

Not All Asymptomatic Carotid Plaques Are Equal: Some Require Intervention, Iram Naz

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Ischemic stroke represents a major health hazard around the world, which has a severe impact on society and the health-care systems. Roughly, 15% of all strokes can be attributed to significant atherosclerotic disease of the carotid arteries. Some patients presenting with disabling strokes for the first time cannot benefit from carotid revascularization having lost the opportunity of prevention. We know that all symptomatic patients were once asymptomatic. Hence, after identifying high risk carotid plaques and patient’s characteristics suitable for interventions, they should be offered carotid revascularization at specialized centers (with low perioperative stroke and death rates) to prevent stroke and …

Novel Use Of An Ultrasonic Bone-Cutting Device For Endoscopic-Assisted Craniosynostosis Surgery, Chaichana Kl, Jallo Gi, Dorafshar Ah, Ahn Es Jan 2013

Novel Use Of An Ultrasonic Bone-Cutting Device For Endoscopic-Assisted Craniosynostosis Surgery, Chaichana Kl, Jallo Gi, Dorafshar Ah, Ahn Es

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Endoscopic-assisted craniosynostosis surgery is associated with less blood loss and shorter operative times as compared to open surgery. However, in infants who have low circulating blood volumes, the endoscopic approach is still associated with significant blood loss. A major source of blood loss is the bone that is cut during surgery. We discuss the novel use of an ultrasonic bone-cutting device for craniosynostosis surgery, which decreases bone bleeding. This device, which has primarily only been used for spine and skull base surgery, may help reduce blood loss in these infants.
