The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires Jan 1981

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires

Theses and Dissertations

History can provide some clues concerning the physical abuse of women by men. Beginning in biblical times, women were viewed as the property of men (Steinmetz, 1977). Until 1824 by law, a man was allowed to strike his wife if provoked (Bell, 1977). Under the law, some states still grant "spouse immunity" in cases of assault and battery, where married couples are involved. The focus of this research was to examine the problem of wife abuse through the perspective of social learning theory. Using Roy's theory of adaptation (Roy, 1976), the investigator also examined the area of self-concept as it related …

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree Jan 1981

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

Child Mental Health In Egypt, Nahed Waines Jan 1979

Child Mental Health In Egypt, Nahed Waines

Faculty Book Chapters

We present in this issue of The Cairo Papers a broad spectrum of articles dealing with the children of Egypt and their families; each article has a research base in the real world of childhood and each in its own way suggests trends for further work in both research and applied areas in child development. Ciaccio's paper consists of an integrated set of recommendations based on action-oriented research sponsored by UNICEF- it is clear from a reading of his paper that the International Year of The Child is not simply another 'UN year' but rather a point of departure from …

Changing Concepts Of Deviance, Douglas D. Bond Jan 1969

Changing Concepts Of Deviance, Douglas D. Bond

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

As I look at the list of distinguished Stoneburner Lecturers, I see I am honored by being the first psychiatrist. This is a tribute to the Department of Psychiatry. In thinking about this paper, I at first considered giving a kind of history of psychiatry. What seemed to me more interesting, however, was an examination of our whole perspective on deviance, in general, and what we call “illness”—an example of a certain kind of deviance, or, perhaps more accurately, a certain way of looking at deviance.

Recognition And Management Of Psychiatric Emergencies, John A. Ewing Jan 1969

Recognition And Management Of Psychiatric Emergencies, John A. Ewing

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Emergencies are simply unforeseen occurrences which present themselves to physicians in a variety of ways. Indeed, a physician is not the first person on hand for most emergencies but may merely be called upon for appropriate intervention. Any of us can be presented with an emergency, psychiatric or otherwise, at any moment. However, each of us has his own particular probability of sampling psychiatric emergencies, depending upon who he is and what he does. In actual fact, psychiatric emergencies more often confront people other than psychiatrists, for example, the policeman, the social worker, and the general practitioner (Ewing, 1965). As …

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson Aug 1963

Anxiety And Fear In Personality Structure, Robert Robert Mickelson

Graduate Student Research Papers

The problem to be studied is the effect of anxiety and fear on the personality. Concern with this problem stems from the fact that on many occasions anxiety and fear blocks a person's free approach to experience and often anxiety and fear prevent one from building sound interpersonal and intergroup relations.

Ways To Mental Health: West And East, George F. Melody Jan 1959

Ways To Mental Health: West And East, George F. Melody

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

What is the psychosocial condition of Western man? What has happened to Apollonian man, characterized by order, harmony and leisure? Why has the ideal or Apollonian man (so well described by Nietzsche and Spengler) given way to Dionysian man ... Faustian man? Whence has gone the Apollonian safeguard, essential to measure, constraint, health and love?

How really sick is Western man? Why is he not at peace with himself, his family, his associates, people in other countries who may have political philosophies different from his own ... nay, with God? An inventory of the concrete condition of Western man may …
