Understanding International Immobility Through Internal Migration: ‘Left Behind’ Nurses In The Philippines, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Romeo Luis A. Macabasag
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Migration scholars have tended to portray internal mobility as a step toward broader cross-border movement, reinforcing the notion of ongoing progress toward international migration. This article argues for a need to recognize how internal mobility can also explain international immobility, or why people do not move across national borders. Using the case of Filipino nurses, we argue that while internal migration does allow aspiring migrants to build the potential ability to emigrate, individual trajectories are much more diverse and multi-directional, often prolonging or reinforcing their international immobility. As a result, and in our case study, the costs and burdens of …

Nursing And Allied Health Staff Perceptions And Experiences Of A Volunteer Stroke Peer Support Program: A Qualitative Study, Rosemary Saunders, Kien Chan, Renée M. Graham, Elena Adams, Caroline E. Bulsara, Karla Seaman, Marcella Cranny-Connolly
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Purpose: Stroke brings about physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes and, conse-quently, many stroke survivors feel underprepared for the transition from hospital to home. Nursing and allied health staff have a key role in stroke rehabilitation. Peer support programs have been found effective in supporting stroke survivors, alongside hospital staff caring for stroke patients, by providing experiential knowledge that staff are not able to provide. Aim: This study explored the perceptions and experiences of nursing and allied health staff of a volunteer peer support program for stroke inpatients. Methods: This study utilised a qualitative, evaluative case study design. This study was …
Delegation Practices Between The Registered Nurse And The Assistant In Nursing In The Acute Care Setting In Western Australia, Carol Crevacore
Delegation Practices Between The Registered Nurse And The Assistant In Nursing In The Acute Care Setting In Western Australia, Carol Crevacore
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Background:
Delegation is an essential skill that allows the Registered Nurse (RN) to allocate aspects of patient care to other team members including the unregulated Assistant in Nursing (AIN). Concerns have been raised about the activities delegated to AINs in the acute care environment.
Aim:
The aim of this research was to explore the practice of delegation between the RN and the AIN in the acute care environment. This delegation practice was examined through the lens of both the RN and the AIN.
Methodology:
This study used a mixed method explanatory sequential design. The participants were RNs and AINs working …
Questionnaires To Measure Process And Structure Of Quality Indicators For Pediatric Nursing, Maria Forsner, Evalotte Mörelius, Lena Hanberger
Questionnaires To Measure Process And Structure Of Quality Indicators For Pediatric Nursing, Maria Forsner, Evalotte Mörelius, Lena Hanberger
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Introduction The quality of nursing care has a significant impact on the outcomes of care. The specific needs of children requiring hospital care make it essential to monitor and compare data not only on the medically oriented outcome measure but also on nursing care, structure, and process, requiring perspectives from registered nurses (RNs) and nurse managers (NMs). Thus, this project aimed to evaluate the structure and process of nursing quality indicators in pediatric hospital care with questionnaires distributed to RN and NM. Methods We developed separate questionnaires for NMs and RNs to assess the process and structure of the quality …

Workplace bullying are prevalent among the nursing workforce. Consequences of workplace bullying include psychological stress and workplace accidents and injuries. Psychological hardiness is proposed as a buffer for workplace bullying and psychological stress on workplace accidents and injuries. This study adopted the Affective Events Theory and Conservation of Resources Theory to develop and test a moderated mediated model in two field …

Background: Rapid fluid resuscitation is essential to the management of pediatric shock, but there are many barriers to published guideline adherence. Limited evidence describing emergency department (ED) nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation exists. This study described pediatric ED nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation.
Methods: This single-site descriptive study used survey methodology. A 23-question survey was distributed to nurses in the ED at Boston Children’s Hospital. The survey measured nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to fluid resuscitation.
Results: Findings suggested gaps found between actual and perceived knowledge consistent with prior evidence. There was a 50.9% response …
Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair
Can Nurses Predict Transitions Of Care In Assisted Living?, Emma M. Blair
Honors Theses and Capstones
The older adult population is rising exponentially due to medical advances and the aging of the Baby Boomer Population (Wister, 2005). Many of these older adults are choosing to live in assisted living facilities due to the increased independence and decreased cost of living compared to nursing homes (Grabowski, Stevenson, & Cornell, 2012). Since nurses are the primary directors of care for those in assisted living, the question was asked if they can predict a resident’s length of stay based on their knowledge and clinical judgement. A prospective study was performed at an assisted living facility in Oakland, California to …
