Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient With A Lacunar Stroke And Multiple Comorbidities: A Case Report, Kevin Tachibana
Case Report Posters
Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term disability in the United States. A lacunar infarct is a type of ischemic stroke that occurs within the deepest structures of the brain when one of the small arteries gets blocked. Risk factors for a lacunar stroke include older age, high blood pressure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, and obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this case report was to describe the plan of care for a patient with a lacunar infarct and multiple comorbidities in a long-term care facility with the goal of …

The Use Of Manual Lumbar Traction And Therapeutic Exercise In The Treatment Of A Patient With Low Back Pain: A Case Report, Kyle Rasmussen
Case Report Posters
The prevalence of low back pain (LBP) has been increasing in the United States. Manual lumbar traction and therapeutic exercise are two common treatments by physical therapists (PT) for LBP, but there is limited research investigating the combined effects of these treatments on low back pain. The purpose of this case report was to investigate the combined effects of these treatments on LBP.

Balance & Fall Prevention Rehabilitation Program For A 77-Year-Old Patient Following A Trimalleolar Fracture: A Case Report, Kathryn Judd, Kirsten Buchanan
Case Report Posters
Balance and fall prevention are typical components of a rehab program in the elderly, however, there is limited research investigating the effects of the combination of balance and fall prevention in an elderly person with a trimalleolar fracture. The purpose of this case report was to describe a comprehensive physical therapy program combining balance training and fall prevention strategies for a 77-year-old patient after a trimalleolar fracture.

Physical Therapy On The Function Of A Patient With Stage Iii Parkinson’S Disease: A Case Report, Kelly Trancygier, Michaael Fillyaw
Case Report Posters
Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects 1.5% of the US population over 65 years of age. PD is typically diagnosed in individuals over the age of 60. There is no cure and the disease itself is not fatal, however, its effects can be very debilitating. PD occurs when the neurons in the basal ganglia of the brain stop producing enough dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate body movements and emotions. When there is a reduction of dopamine in the brain, the motor symptoms of PD begin to appear. The purpose of this case was to report the outcomes of …

A Comprehensive Pt Program Utilizing An Alterg Treadmill For A Patient With Lower Extremity Fractures And Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease: A Case Report, Mark Whitsitt, Kirsten Buchanan
Case Report Posters
People with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease have a greater risk of falls and subsequent fractures due to lower extremity stiffness, muscle wasting, and balance impairments. Positive pressure treadmill systems, such as the AlterG®, are commonly utilized for orthopedic patients, as they allow for early mobility with decreased symptoms. Minimal research exists that has investigated use of the AlterG® in patients with lower extremity fractures and CMT. The purpose of this case report was to investigate a comprehensive physical therapy program including the use of the AlterG® treadmill for a patient with multiple lower extremity fractures and CMT disease.

Acute Care Physical Therapy Status Post Colostomy For A Patient With Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report, Elizabeth Race
Case Report Posters
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a malignancy that begins in the colon or rectum. In 2016 there were 724,690 men and 727,350 women living with a history of CRC, with an estimated 135,430 new cases in 2017. Treatment can include local radiation, systemic chemotherapy, and/or surgery to remove the tumor, which can result in the placement of a colostomy. A colostomy entails a surgical resection to a portion of the lower GI tract, which creates an opening in the abdominal wall referred to as a stoma, which provides a new pathway for removal of gas and stool. Clinical Practice Guidelines for …

Physical Therapy For Low Back Pain With A Focus On Mckenzie Method For Diagnosis And Treatment: A Case Report, Macey Berube
Case Report Posters
Low back pain (LBP) is thought to affect 80% of the population. It decreases work attendance, affects daily activity, and decreases quality of life. Physical Therapy (PT) is a noninvasive form of treatment that may include manual therapy, physical exercise, deep heat modalities, or a combination. The purpose of this case report was to review a multifaceted approach to LBP, including a focus on the McKenzie method and paired with conventional PT for a patient with a recurring episode of chronic LBP.

Research Report Posters
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation (MASR) is an adaptive sporting program that relies on volunteers to instruct participants of varying abilities. In order to effectively instruct, volunteers should firmly understand the health condition their participant has. Previously, MASR lacked a formal curriculum to educate their volunteers. The aim of this research project was to create online learning modules & determine whether a massed or distributed learning schedule resulted in better long term retention and confidence. MASR volunteers were placed into two non-randomized groups of eleven. Six video training modules were created to educate volunteers on the most common conditions encountered. …

The purpose of this case report was to investigate both the physical and psychological outcomes after a comprehensive PT rehabilitation program for a patient who sustained multiple foot and ankle injuries.

Texting And Driving: A Grave Mistake, Hayley Trout, Faith Stewart, Zachariah Bevins, Kortney Frederick
Introduction to Public Health Posters
Texting and driving is a more prevalent problem today than most people realize. Even worse is the fact that it's even a problem for those who drive safely; those around them aren't always making the same choices. Some groups of people are more likely to drive than others depending on social factors, individual behavior choices, policy, and biology and genetics. While this might not have anything to do with prescriptions, it does have to do with pharmacy. A pharmacist is responsible for educating the community and keeping those within it healthy. They have the potential to make a lasting impact …

Our poster discusses an overview of antibiotic resistance. It goes into detail about what it is, how it came to be, and what medical professionals can do in their attempt to prevent it, as well as the general public. It also discusses the impact the impact antibiotic resistance has had on pharmacy, as well as the science behind it. A few organizations working towards this problem, and who keep a close eye on this issue are mentioned as well. We also discuss the determinants of health, which is essentially what is being done about it politically, individually, and the health …

Introduction to Public Health Posters
Waste and where it ends up is not a common discussion topic; in fact, it is often treated as a taboo subject. However, it has become necessary to examine this topic due to the growing ecological problems caused by the collection of garbage within our oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage patch, in particular, has grown quite large, and it is now affecting the health of people. This poster explores the ramifications of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It discusses the background of the garbage patches and the impact of the issue. It also mentions the different determinants of health that …

College of Population Health Posters
Background:
In the U.S. Hispanic population overall, heart disease is the leading cause of death. The prevalence of hypertension among Mexican American immigrants is lower than the general population, yet it is on the rise. Health risks among Hispanics vary depending on their length of stay in the US (as proxy measure of acculturation). The purpose of this study was to examine the association between acculturation and the individual's likelihood of being diagnosed with hypertension among Hispanic Americans.
Methods:
We used data from the 2014 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) and performed univariate analysis to examine racial differences in prevalence …
