Background Protein-energy malnutrition is very common in cirrhosis and associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity. Simple bedside parameters to identify malnutrition are essential to diagnose and manage the nutritional deficit early to improve the prognosis of cirrhotic patients. This study aims to assess the nutritional status of hepatic cirrhotic patients using different tools to determine the prevalence of malnutrition among them, and to compare the different used methods of assessment. Objective The aim was to determine the effect of administration of parenteral l-alanyl-l-glutamine-containing formula on occurrence of treatment-related malnutrition and acute radiotherapy (RT)-related toxicities in patients with head and neck cancer. Background Studies have shown that glutamine-containing nutritional therapy can improve the nutritional status of adult patients with cancer. Patients and methods A total of 40 patients with head and neck carcinoma were randomized to receive either parenteral l-alanyl-l-glutamine-containing formula (0.4 mg/kg) during the first 2 weeks of RT (with or without chemotherapy) or placebo. Objective The study aimed to review the different types of nutrition in critically ill pediatric patients. Data sources Medline databases (PubMed, Medscape, Science Direct, EMF-Portal, Google Scholar) and all materials available in the Internet from 2001 to 2014 were searched. Study selection The initial search presented 150 articles of which 50 met the inclusion criteria. The articles studied the role of nutritional management in critically ill pediatric patients. Data extraction If the studies did not fulfill the inclusion criteria, they were excluded.
