Appliccation Of Electroacupuncture For The Treatment Of Psot-Stroke Paresthesia, Baii-Jia Yang, Yih-Sin Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In a prospective study we applied electroacupuncture, according to the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine and previous studies of electrostimulation, to patients suffering from post-stroke paresthesia.Electroacupuncture over the head and limbs was applied to 20 patients with post-stroke paresthesia. All patients received brain CT scan examination of which most revealed subcortical lesions (19 subcorlicai lesions and 1middle cerebral arterial territory infarction). The duration of treatment was thirty minutes and each patient received electroacupuncture treatment once per week for 3 months. The evaluation of the treatment effect was according to the patient's self-estimation using a visual analogue scale. The results demonstrated …

Nasal Ventilator Use In Bronchiectasis With Respiratory Failure: A Casereport, Te-Hsiu Lee, Tyng-Guey Wang, Meng-Yue Chien, Ping-Ing Lee, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
It is not rare for the individuals with bronchiectasis, defining pathologically as a permanently abnormal dilation of subsegmental airways, to develop respiratory insufficiency as respiratory tract infection occurs. In acute stage, intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) via endotracheal tube is often mandatory to maintain their respiration, but most of them could breathe spontaneously later on. However, there are still a small number of patients remaining ventilator dependent cither totally or incompletely, and requiring tracheostomy even though miscellaneous complications, such as chronic bacterial colonization, disturbance of patient's speech and swallow, decreased cough ability, tracheomalacia, tracheal stenosis, perforation, tracheoesoph-ageal fistula, as well …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This is a case of 69-year-old male patient who suffered from cerebral infarction with right-sided hemiplegia, transient motor aphasia, suspected thalamic syndrome, impaired activity of daily living and partial dependence. There were no past history of D.M. psychosis or other significant diseases except mild hypertension under thiazide control, also no family history of suicide or other hereditary diseases.Post-stroke depression had developed progressively since March 1993 including insomnia, fatigue indifference, anorexia, moodiness. Major depression was impressed based upon the diagnostic criteria of DSM-III. Other causes of depression including iatrogenesis and metabolic diseases had been ruled out. Psychological test revealed high score …

Cervical Myelopathy Secondary To Cervical Disc Protrusion In Patient With Dystonic Cerebral Palsy--A Casereport, Huey-Wen Liang, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yen-Ho Wang, Tiffany T. F. Shih, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Cervical myelopathy had been noted in patients with involuntary neck movement, especially in individuals with athetoid-dystonic cerebral palsy(CP). The excessive and repeated neck motions were considered to be responsible for the premature spondylosis, which might be the cause of myelopathy. The exact pathophysiology and managements were still controversial. Here we present a rare case who was a male patient with long-lasting dystonic neck movement developing cervical myelopathy due to protrusion of disc in his relatively young age. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed the protrusion of cervical disc at the level of C3-4, which was correlated well with his clinical symptoms. …

The Effects Of Russian Stimulation To Muscle Power: Comparison Of Cmap And Muscle Strength Test, Huann Chang, Rai-Chi Chan, Chou-Jong Chen, Chi-Han Lee, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The purposes of this study are 1. To monitor the improvement of muscle performance following Russian stimulation training by muscle strength test and compound muscle action potential (CMAP) recording. 2. To investigate the place of quantitative CMAP recording technique in evaluation of muscle power. the APB and ADQ muscles from 20 healthy volunteer were included. Muscle strength was recorded by strain gauge, and CMAP of both muscles were recorded by Viking EMG following supramaximal electrical stimulation at wrist. Two evaluation sequences were done before and after Russian stimulation training of APB and ADQ muscles for 1 month. Results disclosed that, …

An Investigation Of Post-Discharge Stroke Patients In Tainan, Chun-Liang Lu, Tse-Chieh Hseuh
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In order to realize the actual living condition of me stroke patients after discharge, we collected 30 patients who had been admitted to National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) under the diagnosis of cerebral vascular accident from November 1988 to August 1990. We interviewed directly with the families and patients, and followed them for up to more than three years, so as to know the real problems encountered by the patients during the postdischarged period. For the purpose of improving the life quality of patients, we also investigated the adaptability of the living enviorment andthe necessity of persistent rehabilitation at …

Etiological Study Of Global Aphasia, Szu-Fu Chen, Tsan-Hon Liou, Fu-Mei Hsich, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Global aphasia is the most severe form of language impairment that occurs following focal brain damage. Since communication and neurological functions in patients with global aphasia are seriously impaired, it is a real challenge to the rehabilitation team. The study was designed to determine the etiology of global aphasia, to find out any relationship between different etiology and age or sex. Fifty-one patients with global aphasia attending to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of National Taiwan University Hospital from June 1990 to May 1993, were surveyed for the etiology of aphasia. Of the 51 patients (33 males and 15 …

Assessment Of Central Motor Conduction Time In Patients With Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy, Chein-Wei Chang, Swei-Ming Lin, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Motor evoked potential (MEP) study by transcranial electric or magnetic stimulation or the motor cortex has been practically used for clinical evaluation of electrophysiological function of the central motor pathway. By using a percutaneous magnetic stimulation over the motor cortex and F-wave measurement from the median nerve stimulation, central motor conduction time (CMCT) from motor cortex to C8 spinal cord was measured in 25 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and in 16 healthy subjects. Latencies from motor cortex to C8 spinal cord was 10.4±2.1 (mean ±ISD) ms which was significantly longer than 5.3±0.8 ms in controls under the correction …
