Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis); is a parasitic zoonosis with a prevalence of 53.8%, whose intermediate host is mosquitoes (Anopheles, Aedes, Culex, Taeniorhychus, Mansonia and Armigenes), final hosts are carnivores (dog, cat, fox, etc.) and humans. The causative agent settles in the pulmonary arteries and causes pulmonary hypertension, which can progress to congestive heart failure. Cardiac troponins (cTn), which have recently been used in veterinary cardiology, are considered the gold standard because of their high sensitivity and specificity for myocardial injury. In the study, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) levels in healthy …

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the elasticity of the optic nerve (ON) and retinal-choroid-sclera complex (RCSC) in dogs with healthy eyes and secondary glaucoma using ARFI elastography. ARFI elastography was performed on normal eyes (n = 25) and affected by glaucoma (n = 25). The mean values of shear wave velocity (SWV) of the ON and RCSC were compared between groups by the Student?s t-test. The correlation between elastography measurements of the ON and RCSC and the intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured. The SWV of the optic nerve in glaucomatous eyes (4.77 ± 1.59 m/s) …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Primary hypoadrenocorticism is characterized by insufficient adrenocortical hormonal secretion of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, which causes unspecific signs and laboratory alterations such as hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, resulting in a low relation between these two electrolytes. The aim of this work was to carry out a retrospective study with data obtained from the medical records of 32 dogs with a proven diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism between the years 2011 and 2018. The parameters weight, sex, reproductive condition, breed, and age were analyzed, as well as the results of laboratory tests of dogs with confirmed hypoadrenocorticism. There was no breed or sex predisposition. There …

The goal of this study was to describe and compare B mode and elastographic characteristics of the pectineus muscle of healthy dogs with dysplastic dogs. Thirty-one dogs (62 limbs) with hip dysplasia and 17 nondysplastic dogs (34 limbs) were evaluated. The hip dysplasia score was defined according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Using B mode, echotexture and echogenicity of different regions of the pectineus muscle were evaluated. By means of ARFI elastography, qualitative (elastogram) and quantitative (shear wave velocity) tissue stiffness was assessed. B mode findings demonstrated a hyperechoic and heterogeneous pattern of the pectineus tissue in dogs with hip …

Two Cases Of Phacoemulsification In The Presence Of A Small Pupil Using An Iris Expander, Ha-Eun Lee, Joon-Young Kim, Da-Eun Lee, Jin-Gu Kang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A small pupil and poor pupil dilation are well-known risk factors faced by veterinary ophthalmologists during and after cataract surgery. We here describe two cases of phacoemulsification performed using an iris expander (Visitec I-Ring Pupil Expander, Beaver-Visitec International, USA) for treating cataracts in dogs with small pupils. Using this technique, we performed cataract extraction effectively in dogs with insufficiently dilated pupils. This case report provides useful information on the use of an iris expander for phacoemulsification in eyes with a small pupil, which can be applied in veterinary settings.

Proliferation Effects Of Phenylboronic Acid And Boric Acid On Canine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan, Zafer Sayin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of phenylboronic acid (PBA) and boric acid (BA) on the proliferation of canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were investigated. Treatment of PBMCs from mixed breed dogs with PBA or BA (0.05 µg/mL) alone elicited blastogenic responses of 0.478 ± 0.438 and 0.499 ± 0.366, respectively. We observed an additive effect on proliferation when purebred Kangal PBMCs were cultured in a combination of BA (0.001 µg/mL) and the mitogenic lectin concanavalin A (1 µg/mL). However, the effects were not statistically significant. We detected varied IL-2 and IL-4 secretion in response to stimulation with boron-containing compounds. Our findings suggest …

A Geometric Modeling Of Dog Intestine, Hüseyi̇n Yildiz, Kadri̇ Arslan, İhsani̇ye Coşkun, Bahri̇ Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In computer-assisted surgical applications, reconstruction of 3-D morphological peculiarities are required. Herein, we present a geometric modeling of the separate intestinal sections of the canine. The intestine of the dog was considered a tubular shape along a special curve. Seven male Turkish shepherd dogs were used for the modeling study. The length (cm) and diameter (mm) of the intestines were measured with digital calipers and formulated. These models were then compared to their original photographs. It was concluded that the geometric modeling and experimental work were consistent. These kinds of organ modeling techniques will enable medical lecturers to show 3-D …
