Auditory Inhibitory Gating In Medial Prefrontal Cortex: Single Unit And Local Field Potential Analysis, Howard C. Cromwell Dec 2005

Auditory Inhibitory Gating In Medial Prefrontal Cortex: Single Unit And Local Field Potential Analysis, Howard C. Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

Medial prefrontal cortex is a crucial region involved in inhibitory processes. Damage to the medial prefrontal cortex can lead to loss of normal inhibitory control over motor, sensory, emotional and cognitive functions. The goal of the present study was to examine the basic properties of inhibitory gating in this brain region in rats. Inhibitory gating has recently been proposed as a neurophysiological assay for sensory filters in higher brain regions that potentially enable or disable information throughput. This perspective has important clinical relevance due to the findings that gating is dramatically impaired in individuals with emotional and cognitive impairments (i.e. …

The foundation of psychiatric/mental health nursing is the relationship between nurse and patient. Caring for persons with mental illness within the context of this relationship requires knowledge of the individual. To gain this knowledge, understanding the patient’s perceptions and concerns is essential. Research suggests that this understanding does not always occur. The study reported here examined what it means to individuals with mental illness to be understood. In-depth phenomenological interviews revealed three predominant themes: “I was important,” “It really made us connect,” and “They got on my level.” Nurses can use these findings to improve the care of those with …

The Limitations Due To Exposure Detection Limits For Regression Models, Enrique F. Schisterman, Albert Vexler, Brian W. Whitcomb, Aiyi Liu Dec 2005

The Limitations Due To Exposure Detection Limits For Regression Models, Enrique F. Schisterman, Albert Vexler, Brian W. Whitcomb, Aiyi Liu

Brian W. Whitcomb

Biomarker use in exposure assessment is increasingly common and consideration of related issues is of growing importance. Exposure quantification may be compromised when measurement is subject to a lower threshold. Statistical modeling of such data requires a decision regarding the handling of such readings. Various authors have considered this problem. In the context of linear regression analysis, Richardson and Ciampi proposed replacement of data below a threshold by a constant equal to the expectation for such data to yield unbiased estimates. Use of such an imputation has some limitations; distributional assumptions are required, and bias reduction in estimation of regression …

9. Domestic Violence And Child Protection: Confronting The Dilemmas In Moving From Family Court To Dependency Court., Thomas D. Lyon, Mindy B. Mechanic

Thomas D. Lyon

The overlap between domestic violence and child maltreatment has received an enormous amount of attention from domestic violence advocates, child advocates, policymakers, and researchers. The goals of empowering victims of domestic violence, usually women, and protecting children from abuse and neglect, usually by men, are theoretically compatible and mutually reinforcing. However, advocacy for battered mothers and protection for maltreated children have developed along different paths, leading to conflict and distrust (Edleson, 1999).

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of overweight and obesity with physical activity, blood pressure (BP) and serum lipid profiles. METHODS Epidemiologic investigation of 1,450 students, between the ages of 6 and 18, in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG. Data: weight, height, BP, skinfold thickness, waist circumference, physical activity, total cholesterol (TC), LDL-c, HDL-c, and dietary habits. RESULTS The prevalence rates for overweight and obesity were 8.4% and 3.1%, respectively. In relation to the students in the lower quartile (Q1) of the distribution of subscapular skinfold, the students in the upper quartile (Q4) presented a 3.7 times higher risk (odds …

In Search Of The Anglophone Doctor In Jacques Ferron’S Story “Le Petit William”, Vivian C. Mcalister, Christiane I. Mcalister

Vivian C. McAlister

The story of ‘Le Petit William’ (Contes anglais, 1964) is based on Ferron’s experiences as a general practitioner in the Gaspé in 1946. A medical event, use of the maternal left lateral position by a sage-femme to deliver a baby boy, becomes allegory. The sage-femme had learned the technique from a visiting Anglophone doctor. A simple joke, which superficially appears to be the story’s culmination, takes on a sombre political tone when considered in the light of the Latin epigraph. Trips to the Gaspé, a review of the history of obstetrics and speculation are used in this paper to understand …

Use Of Stimulus-Frequency Otoacoustic Emission Latency And Level To Investigate Cochlear Mechanics In Human Ears, Kim Schairer, John C. Ellison, Denis F. Fitzpatrick, Douglas H. Keefe Dec 2005

Use Of Stimulus-Frequency Otoacoustic Emission Latency And Level To Investigate Cochlear Mechanics In Human Ears, Kim Schairer, John C. Ellison, Denis F. Fitzpatrick, Douglas H. Keefe

Kim S. Schairer

Stimulus frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) sound pressure level (SPL) and latency were measured at probe frequencies from 500 to 4000 Hz and probe levels from 40 to 70 dB SPL in 16 normal-hearing adult ears. The main goal was to use SFOAE latency estimates to better understand possible source mechanisms such as linear coherent reflection, nonlinear distortion, and reverse transmission via the cochlear fluid, and how those sources might change as a function of stimulus level. Another goal was to use SFOAE latencies to noninvasively estimate cochlear tuning. SFOAEs were dominated by the reflection source at low stimulus levels, consistent …

Nowhere is the failure of the health care system, as currently managed, more evident than in the surgical care of obesity. A marked contrast has emerged between surgery in the United States and Canada for these patients. It is not clear whether the reluctance to supply surgical services in Canada is due to a bias in favour of “more deserving” patients or whether the considerably higher rate of obesity surgery in the US is due to the excesses of private enterprise. Governments have acknowledged that an element of the former proposition is true by referring obese patients to centres in …

Competency based strategies for educational outcomes have been in development in many health related fields over the past several years. These have the intent of improving the quality and competency of graduates. With many optometric programs in both developed and underdeveloped countries in their infancy, use of these strategies could not only improve educational outcomes but standardize training. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is the accrediting body for all United States medical residencies and fellowships. In 2001, they began the Outcomes Project which mandated specific training and evaluation in the six General Competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, …
