Transcriptional Analysis Of Articularis Genu Sarcopenia In Osteoarthritis, Lauren Guillot, Mallory Crawford, Jose Cruz-Ayala, Cadence Gatterer, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Knee osteoarthritis (kOA) causes atrophy and changes in myofiber distribution in regional musculature, including the Quadriceps femoris (QF) complex and the Articularis genu (AG), a mono-articular muscle that retracts the suprapatellar bursa during extension. The AG shares similar myofiber structure and innervation to the QF and can be easily sampled during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for kOA, allowing its potential use in developing a diagnostics platform for management of peri-articuar muscle health. The differential expression of myosin heavy chains (MHC) in type (T) T1 slow oxidative (MHC7), T2a fast glycolytic (MHC2), T2a/x hybrids (co- expression of MHC2 and MHC1), and …

Adolescent Reproductive Health Education During Covid-19: Evaluation Of A Model For Virtual Reproductive Health Intervention In New Orleans, Je Seay, Margaret Carey, R Dunn, Kelly Chau, R Mehdizadeh, S Greene, J Mecklosky, Ryan Pasternak

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, school-based reproductive health interventions served as a key component of adolescent reproductive healthcare (Lindberg, 2020). Many students received limited reproductive health education prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and even fewer are receiving reproductive health education now due to the constraints of virtual or hybrid learning environments (Lindberg, 2020). Comprehensive reproductive health education through a virtual instruction model could increase access to reproductive education for students in schools employing virtual or hybrid instruction due to COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a model for virtual reproductive health educational intervention …

Views Of Reproductive-Aged Female Cancer Patients On Oncofertility Care, Erin Boudoin, Akshay Goswami, Amelia Jernigan Oct 2021

Views Of Reproductive-Aged Female Cancer Patients On Oncofertility Care, Erin Boudoin, Akshay Goswami, Amelia Jernigan

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

In recent years, there have been many advancements in detection and treatment that have allowed individuals to survive cancer at much higher rates than we have seen in the past. These types of advancements have given patients the opportunity to prioritize issues such as financial burdens and overall quality of life when assessing their options for disease management. Aggressive treatment options have led to higher survival rates but the side effects of said treatments often render female patients infertile due to premature ovarian insufficiency (Northern Children’s Oncology Group, 2017). During the tense period of receiving a diagnosis and treatment/management plan, …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Objectives: Low back pain and neck pain are two very common sources of pain that, without proper treatment, can significantly reduce quality of life and interfere with daily activities.1 It is estimated that up to 84 percent of adults have low back pain at some time in their lives, with 25% of adults reporting low back pain in the last three months.2-4 Additionally, neck pain can often share similar pathology as low back pain, with resultant increasing demand for treatment options. Some studies suggest estimated 1 year incidence of neck pain is between 10.4% and 21.3%,5 with an annual prevalence …

Documentation Of Operative Vaginal Deliveries, Margaret Carey, Stacey Scheib Oct 2021

Documentation Of Operative Vaginal Deliveries, Margaret Carey, Stacey Scheib

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify if physicians are documenting operative vaginal deliveries according to Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) guidelines and to identify the frequency with which each criterion is being documented. BACKGROUND: An operative vaginal delivery is a delivery in which the provider uses forceps, a vacuum, or another device to aid in the extraction of the fetus from the vagina. In some cases, operative vaginal delivery can serve as an alternative to cesarean section when spontaneous vaginal delivery is not possible. Operative vaginal deliveries have a higher mortality than spontaneous vaginal deliveries1; operative vaginal deliveries also have …

Engineering Self-Assembling Vascular Constructs For A Membrane Free-Microphysiological System, Kevin Conrad, Ethan Byrne, Mark Mondrinos

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Microvasculature mediates the pathophysiology of nearly every disease, and there is an urgent need to better understand how it impacts the initiation, progression, and conclusion of disease. To this end, it is essential to have a reliable method for constructing vascular networks in vitro which phenotypically resemble the human body. Here we optimize the morphology of self- assembling microvascular networks in collagen-fibrin hydrogels for use in a perfusable, membrane-free organ chip (MFOC). Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and human lung fibroblasts (HLF) were co-cultured in collagen-fibrin hydrogels and vasculogenesis was observed to begin within 24 hours and continue for …

The Heart Of The Matter: Cardiac Specific Discrepancies Between Human And Mouse Models Of Friedreich Ataxia, Katherine Copenhaver, Ed Grabczyk

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Friedreich Ataxia (FRDA) is a relentlessly progressive neurodegenerative disease that manifests with multiple symptoms, which may include progressive gait and limb ataxia, loss of vibratory and position sense, progressive motor weakness, diabetes mellitus, and scoliosis. This condition also affects the heart, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the cause of death in approximately 60% of patients. FRDA is a DNA repeat disorder, caused by the somatic expansion of GAA•TTC repeats within the first intron of the frataxin (FXN) gene. This leads to decreased FXN mRNA expression. The length of the repeat tract correlates with the severity of FRDA symptoms and inversely with …

Analysis Of Maximal Intramedullary Nail Separation In Pediatric Femur Fractures, John Cooper, Michael Heffernan, Claudia Leonardi, Manaf Younis, William Arnold

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: Pediatric femur fractures are the most common orthopedic surgery requiring hospitalizations along with monitoring for 12-24 months after discharge. Flexible intramedullary (IM) nailing is a common technique for the treatment of pediatric femur fractures and has yielded shorter time to weight-bearing and return to activity when compared to spica casting and external fixation. The nails pass through the medulla in either a ‘C-’ or ‘S-’ shaped configuration and, as a byproduct, produce three points of fixation: the proximal nail crossing, the maximal point of separation, and the distal nail crossing. Recent literature suggests that the point of maximal nail …

Granulomatous Tenosynovitis Of The Hand Due To Mycobacterium Kansasii In An Immune-Competent Host, Sarah Corley, Ellen Ingram, Logan Ledet

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

A 50-year-old male with a past medical history of intravenous drug use and compensated cirrhosis due to treated Hepatitis C infection presented to an orthopedic clinic with a rare form of a Mycobacterium kansasii infection. Normally this infection lends itself to pulmonary manifestations in immunocompromised individuals [1]; however, this immunocompetent patient presented solely with skeletal complaints, specifically in the form of a mass on the dorsal surface of his left wrist which was later diagnosed as severe extensor tenosynovitis. Surgery was suggested as treatment, but the patient did not elect to undergo the procedure as the mass spontaneously resolved. However, …

Differential Expression Of Fibrogenic Biomarkers In Naïve Human Synoviocytes Cultured In Synovial Fluid From Knee Osteoarthritis Patients, Jose Cruz Ayala, Peter Issa, Stefan Sarkovich, Jennifer Simkin, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

The synovium maintains normal joint function by secreting the fundamental components of synovial fluid (SF), but is also susceptible to inflammatory and fibrotic thickening during osteoarthritis (OA), contributing to disease symptomology. We recently published evidence that synovial fibrosis (SFb) presents heterogeneously in a large sample of patients with end-stage OA in association with deficits in range of motion (ROM). During OA, diseased chondrocytes and synoviocytes undergo a dynamic crosstalk that influences severity of cartilage degradation and synoviopathy. Therefore, we aim to test the responses of validated commercial human fibroblast- like synoviocytes (HFLS) after stimulation with SF from high or low …

Parenteral Corticosteroids After Fragility Fracture Increases The Odds Of A Repeat Fracture, Justin David, Marc R. Zucker, Timothy F. Carroll, Ross E. Straughan, Mishra Jaya, Jessie R. Gills, M Westerman

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by porous and low-density bones. Patients with osteoporosis have an increased risk of fragility fractures and subsequent repeat fractures. Due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with fractures, medications that cause high risk of falls and decreased bone density should be used with caution to prevent repeat fractures. Some studies have shown that there is no change in fracture-associated medication use before and after a fracture. This study aims to explore the trends of systemic corticosteroid use, which causes a known physiologic decrease in bone density, before and after primary fracture and their …

Peripheral Immune Cell Pro- And Anti-Nociceptive Gene Expression In Chronicbinge Alcohol Administered Siv-Infected Rhesus Macaques, Michael Dubic, Liz Simon, Patricia Molina

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

People living with HIV (PLWH) have a 2-fold higher prevalence of chronic pain compared to the general population. Reports in the literature indicate that alcohol consumption to self-medicate pain may increase the incidence of at-risk alcohol use. Chronic alcohol use, HIV infection, and anti-retroviral therapy (ART) all independently lead to altered pain states, yet the underlying pathophysiology is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to explore the utility of peripheral blood mono nuclear cells (PBMCs) as indicators of alcohol-, ART-, and HIV- associated alterations in pro and anti- nociceptive pathways in a relevant preclinical model of HIV-infection. Four- …

Notch Dependency In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Mitochondrial Metabolism, Christine Edomwande, Deniz Ucar, Giulia Monticone, Samarpan Majumder, Lucio Miele, Fokhrul Hossain

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) makes up 15 – 20% of breast cancers. It has the worst prognosis amongst the breast cancer carcinomas. TNBC lacks expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and the endocrine receptors for estrogen and progesterone. Because it is negative for all three therapeutic targets, TNBC is difficult to treat. Chemotherapy is the standard for treatment of TNBC, however, about 80% of TNBC patients do not completely respond to chemotherapy. Resistance to therapy and the recurrence of breast cancer is thought to be caused by breast cancer stem cells. Notch signaling (canonical) is …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is prevalent in People Living with HIV (PLWH). Chronic alcohol use and HIV infections are both stressors that can accelerate the onset of cellular senescence, a pro-inflammatory phenotype associated with unhealthy ageing and contributor to the phenomenon known as “inflamm-aging.” Furthermore, it has been observed that in senescent cells, there is an impairment of Activation-Induced Cell Death (AICD). The mechanism of impairment of AICD in senescent cells remains unknown. The goal of our research is to investigate by which pathway of cell death (apoptosis, pyroptosis, necroptosis) senescent cells are susceptible by analyzing markers of senescence …

Neurobiological Consequences Of Chronic Binge Alcohol Exposure And Ovariectomy On Markers Of Hippocampal Plasticity In Siv-Infected Rhesus Macaques, Taylor Fitzpatrick-Schmidt, Larry B. Coleman, Kimberly N. Edwards, Liz Simon, Patricia E. Molina, Scott Edwards

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has profound impacts on the central nervous system, including HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). HIV-associated cognitive deficits can be further exacerbated by alcohol consumption1 . With the rising prevalence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in females, understanding the neurobiological impact of AUD and HIV infection in this population is increasingly important 2 . The hippocampus is part of the brain’s limbic system and plays prominent roles in both cognition and affective regulation. Thus, investigating hippocampal neuroadaptations in the context of comorbid HIV infection and AUD is critical for understanding the mechanisms of neurocognitive and affective impairment …

Short-Term High Fat, High Sucrose Diet Increases Markers Associated With Hepaticlipid Accumulation In Rhesus Macaques, Eden Gallegos, Liz Simon, Patricia Molina Oct 2021

Short-Term High Fat, High Sucrose Diet Increases Markers Associated With Hepaticlipid Accumulation In Rhesus Macaques, Eden Gallegos, Liz Simon, Patricia Molina

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Self-reported data collected from our clinical cohort, the New Orleans Alcohol Use in HIV (NOAH), shows that a significant number of people living with HIV (PLWH) consume a suboptimal diet as determined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Consumption of a high fat, high sucrose diet (HFSD), known as a Western Diet contributes to metabolic dyshomeostasis and development of metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. At-risk alcohol consumption, HIV-infection, and consumption of a HFSD independently can lead to liver disease. Thus, PLWH with at risk alcohol consumption and consuming a HFSD may have increased risk for liver pathology. Alcoholic …

Female Mice Are Protected From Chronic Inhaled Nicotine-Induced Pulmonaryhypertension Via A Sex Hormone-Independent Mechanism, Idanis Z. Garcia, Nicholas D. Fried, Anna K. Whitehead, Eric Lazartigues, Xinping Yue, Jason D. Gardner

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Cigarette smoking has declined in the United States, but e-cigarettes use increased by 46.2% in young adults and 77.8% in high school students between 2017-2018. Little is known about the long-term health implications of these nicotine-containing devices, but cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, which are the primary cause of death in industrialized countries. Our group previously demonstrated that chronic inhaled nicotine induces pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right ventricular (RV) remodeling in male mice, but female mice exposed to nicotine failed to develop PH, suggesting a sex difference. This led us to hypothesize …

Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Of The Cecum, Lauren Gawey, Elizabeth Ellent, Agustin A. Garcia Oct 2021

Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Of The Cecum, Lauren Gawey, Elizabeth Ellent, Agustin A. Garcia

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: The GI tract is the predominant site of secondary extra-nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Primary lymphomas of the GI tract are rare, accounting for only 1-4% of malignancies arising in the stomach, small intestine, or colon. Primary colorectal lymphoma is even more uncommon, accounting for only 0.3% of large intestinal malignancies and 3% of GI lymphomas. Older adults (i.e. > 60) tend to have a worse prognosis than younger patients with DLBCL, most likely due to increased number of comorbid conditions, lower tolerance to treatment, and inadequate therapy regimens. The cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin is a major treatment consideration in patients …

Background: It is commonly known that alcohol and drug abuse predispose trauma patients to clinical management challenges and worse clinical outcomes. The aim of our study was to assess the effects of pre-injury tox-positivity on outcomes from surgical stabilization of rib fracture (SSRF) on trauma patients. Our hypothesis is that patients with a pre-injury positive toxicology status will have more complications and worse clinical outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospective study using the trauma registry at our Level 1 trauma center examining patients who underwent SSRF between Jan 2016 and Jan 2021. Of the 87 patients who underwent SSRF, we …

Alcohol Metabolism Negatively Affects Early Atdc5 Chondrocyte Differentiationindependent Of Nox4 Expression, Hardy Hang, Alexandra Denys, Martin J. J. Ronis Oct 2021

Alcohol Metabolism Negatively Affects Early Atdc5 Chondrocyte Differentiationindependent Of Nox4 Expression, Hardy Hang, Alexandra Denys, Martin J. J. Ronis

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Alcohol (ethanol) abuse is a widely recognized risk factor in the development of several diseases. Previous studies in our lab have shown that ethanol induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in osteogenic cells, which results in oxidative damage, skeletal dysfunction, and osteoporosis. Moreover, ethanol inhibits epiphyseal plate proliferation in longitudinal bones and affects chondrocyte function, which results in shorter bones. In osteogenic cells, a major source of ethanol-mediated ROS is derived from NADPH oxidases (NOXs). However, it remains uncertain if ROS produced by NOXs during alcohol metabolism result in impaired chondrocyte function and differentiation. In this study, we investigated if …
