This nation is facing a significant nursing faculty shortage not only at the undergraduate but also at the graduate level. As nursing faculty, we must be innovative in considering ways of consolidating resources in this time of demand for advanced practice nurses. With the apparent need for qualified neonatal nurse practitioners in Iowa, the University of Iowa understood the importance of starting a neonatal nurse practitioners program. The University of Iowa College of Nursing and the University of Missouri-Kansas City formed a partnership to educate neonatal nurse practitioners. Public health nursing practice is rooted in the core value of social justice. Nursing faculty whose expertise is in public health are often the content experts responsible for teaching this essential, yet potentially controversial, value. Contemporary threats to academic freedom remind us that the disciplinary autonomy and academic duty to teach social justice may be construed as politically ideological. These threats are of particular concern when faculty members guide students through a scientific exploration of sociopolitical factors that lead to health-related social injustices and encourage students to improve and transform injustices in their professional careers. Racial autobiography, self-narratives on how one learned about the idea of race, has been underutilized as a tool to familiarize and orient students in the process of critical inquiry for nursing research. The aims of this article are to explore how racial autoethnography: (1) repositions students to effect an epistemological change, (2) challenges dominant ideology, and (3) functions as a link between the student and critical theories for use in nursing research. PURPOSE: To report the results of a multidisciplinary, interinstitutional writing support group established to facilitate faculty scholarly productivity. ORGANIZING CONCEPT: The road to scholarship can be filled with many obstacles, among them time constraints, teaching and meeting demands, student needs, office interruptions, and lack of colleagueship. The problems associated with lack of colleagueship, in particular, can be compounded for faculty who work in isolated contexts with few, if any, senior faculty to serve as mentors. The Young Gerontological Nurse Clinician Program: An Innovative Geropsychiatric Nursing Recruitment Strategy, Janet Specht, Paula Mobily

Historically, graduate nurses are not attracted to older adults or geriatric care. Innovative strategies, such as the Young Gerontological Nurse Clinician Program (YGNCP) initiated by the John A. Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence at the University of Iowa, are needed to promote geriatric nursing as a challenging and rewarding practice focus. The YGNCP, which provides early, positive, self-directed experiences for nursing students under the direction and supervision of faculty and expert clinical mentors, shows excellent potential for recruiting nurses to clinical and leadership positions in geriatric and geropsychiatric care.

The purpose of this study is to describe the degree of perceived role strain and the major sources of role strain in nurse faculty employed in major universities; and to explore the relationship between selected socialization experiences and personal characteristics and the degree of role strain experienced. The sample (N = 102) was comprised of full-time tenure track nurse faculty employed in major universities that offered National League for Nursing-accredited undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing, and were located in institutions classified as Research Universities I by the Carnegie Council on Policy Studies in Higher Education (1987).
