Mechanomyography; Lasers For Non-Invasive Quantification Of Muscle Recovery From Exercise Induced Fatigue, Nicholas Rosser, Darryl Mcandrew, Donald Iverson
Darryl J McAndrew
Muscle fatigue is a common clinical sign and possible precursor to musculoskeletal injury. Existing methods of detecting muscle fatigue qualify changes within muscle or across joints, but are expensive, invasive or difficult to use. A technique of mechanomyography utilising maximal percutaneous stimulation (known as the Muscle Displacement Laser {MDL}) is an easy non-invasive assessment tool, which may have considerable application in measuring muscle fatigue and determining recovery. Specifically, this study attempted to validate the MDL as a tool to measure muscle fatigue and determine the time-course of recovery from Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness in human biceps brachii muscle. Methods: …

The Effect Of Elbow Flexion Speed And Partial Limb Occlusion On Emg Activity, John Sampson, Herbert Groeller, Darryl Mcandrew, R Achttien, J Stege
Darryl J McAndrew
This investigation aimed to determine the neuromuscular response of the bicep brachii during heavy (6RM) dynamic resistance exercise performed to volitional exhaustion. Electromyographic (EMG) activity was compared in twelve male subjects performing dominant-limb elbow flexion exercise during four conditions: i) Explosive concentric and eccentric (SSC); ii) Explosive concentric, control eccentric (EC); iii) control (C); and iv) control with limb occlusion (CO) (110mmHg). CO and SSC are reported to increase motor unit activity when compared to control exercise (2 second flexion, 2 second extension). It was hypothesised that EMG activity will be higher in conditions of explosive exercise. Surface EMG activity …

Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Residential Substance Abuse Workers' Intention To Use Evidence-Based Practices, Peter Kelly, Frank Deane, Megan Lovett
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Examine Residential Substance Abuse Workers' Intention To Use Evidence-Based Practices, Peter Kelly, Frank Deane, Megan Lovett
Peter Kelly
There is considerable discrepancy between what is considered evidence-based practice (EBP) and what is actually delivered in substance abuse treatment settings. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB) is a well-established model that may assist in better understanding clinician’s intentions to use EBPs. A total of 106 residential substance abuse workers employed by The Salvation Army participated in the current study. The workers completed an anonymous survey that assessed attitudes toward EBP and examined the constructs within the TpB. A linear regression analysis was used to predict clinicians’ intentions to use EBPs. Overall, the model accounted for 41% of the variance …

'Do More, Smoke Less!' Harm Reduction In Action For Smokers With Mental Health/Substance Use Problems Who Cannot Or Will Not Quit, Amanda Baker, Robin Callister, Peter Kelly, Kypros Kypri
Peter Kelly
Although smoking rates among mental health/substance abusing populations are very high, the focus of treatment and research has tended to be on substances other than tobacco.A range of harm-reduction strategies is needed, including long-term nicotine maintenance, smokeless tobacco and ‘clean’ nicotine products. For those who cannot or will not quit, assistance in reducing smoking should be given. Interventions for smoking among people with mental health/substance use problems may best be delivered by addressing multiple health-risk behaviours, especially physical activity, around the same time. [Baker AL, Callister R, Kelly PJ, Kypri K. ‘Do more, smoke less!’ Harm reduction in action for …

Clinically Signficant Change To Establish Benchmarks In Residential Drug And Alcohol Treatment Services, Daniel Billingham, Peter Kelly, Frank Deane, Trevor Crowe, Mark Buckingham, Fiona Craig
Peter Kelly
There is increasing emphasis on the use routine outcome assessment measures to inform quality assurance initiatives. The calculation of reliable and clinically significant change indices is one strategy that organizations could use to develop both internal and externally focused benchmarking processes. The current study aimed to develop reliable and clinically significant change indices for a range of commonly used outcome measures in the substance abuse field. Participants were attending Kedesh Rehabilitation Services, an Australian residential substance abuse service that also accepts people with co-occurring mental health problems (n0595). A range of mental health and substance use measures were administered to …

New Wine New Wineskins: Revisiting Catholic Sacramentality Through The Eyes Of A Child's Spiritual Being, Nigel Mackay, Peter Caputi, Gerard Stoyles, Geoffrey Lyons
Nigel Mackay
This theoretical paper discusses the spirituality of childhood within the context of Catholic sacramentality, specifically the childÿs experience of the Sacrament of Eucharist. The authors argue that readiness for a childÿs reception of the Eucharist needs to take into account the spiritual being of the child, as well as the childÿs cognitive capacity to grasp the meaning of the Eucharist. Future research directions arising from this theoretical paper are discussed in the conclusion.
The Case Study In Psychoanalytic Education, Nigel Mackay, Steven Poser
The Case Study In Psychoanalytic Education, Nigel Mackay, Steven Poser
Nigel Mackay
The case study is widely used in psychoanalysis for presenting and illustrating clinical theory. It is also the standard means by which analysts-in-training demonstrate their ability both to manage cases and to convey their grasp of the case material. Most training institutes use the formal presentation of a case as a requirement for graduation. The Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, New York, currently requires a single-case study as a final piece for the completion of certificate training (Meadow & Bernstein, 1999). In this paper we argue that the main purpose of the training case study is to illustrate theory systematically …

‘Da, Da Canada, Nyet, Nyet Soviet:’ From Hagiography To Reality In The Canada: Soviet 1972 Hockey Series, Don Morrow
Donald Morrow
This paper forms part of a panel presentation and discussion that re-evaluates the Summit Series from a more critical perspective than the nostalgic rhetoric of the recent, 2012, 40th anniversary of the event. This part of the panel presentation will examine this question: What factors have served to enshrine the Series to the Mythic and Mono-mythic Levels? Evidence utilized includes game-films from the series; the collective rhetoric of secondary sources such as 27 Days in Sept, Face Off at the Summit, Hockey Nite in Moscow, The Days Canada Stood Still, Hockey Showdown, and Shooting for Glory; film analysis such as …

Objectives: To develop a reduced sodium bread in which salt (NaCl) is partially replaced with K, Mg, and Ca salts. Methods: Experimental bread was compared against standard brown bread, after a drop test (to assess whether bread quality deteriorates with abuse) and after usual baking practices for baking properties (volume, crust colour, crumb colour and cell structure), sensory properties and nutritional composition. Plant production feasibility was evaluated in an industrial plant. Breads produced there were subjected to sensory evaluation using triangulation tests in a panel of 122 consumers. Twenty-four samples of both standard and experimental bread were laboratory-analysed for Na, …
Improved Iodine Status In Breastfeeding Women Following Mandatory Fortification, Samantha Axford, Karen Charlton, Heather Yeatman, Gary Ma
Improved Iodine Status In Breastfeeding Women Following Mandatory Fortification, Samantha Axford, Karen Charlton, Heather Yeatman, Gary Ma
Karen E. Charlton
Mandatory iodine fortification of salt used in the bread-making process was introduced in Australia in October 2009 at levels to meet the iodine needs of the general Australian population. An iodine supplement of 150 μg each day is recommended to meet the additional needs of pregnancy and lactation.1,2 As the iodine status of pregnant women in Australia has been found to be inadequate,3–5 it can be anticipated that many women commence lactation in an iodine-depleted state. Thus, it is important to determine the iodine status of breastfeeding mothers.

Defining The Functional Properties Of Dietary Protein And Protein-Rich Foods In Human Energy Expenditure, Sze Yen Tan, Linda Tapsell, Marijka Batterham, Karen Charlton
Karen E. Charlton
Food has a number of functional properties that can support the balance between energy intake and energy expenditure and, theoretically, one of these is the thermic effect of food. Including high-protein foods in meals may be advantageous in contributing to energy expenditure but, in practice, the evidence needs to relate to specific foods and normal dietary conditions. Using the human whole room calorimeter facility, we conducted three studies to examine the effects of: (i) higher and lower levels of protein on energy expenditure; (ii) high-protein meals using different foods to deliver the protein; and (iii) omnivorous and vegetarian cuisines in …
