The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Semi-quantitative analysis of the interleukin 10 (IL-10) in bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC), from pigs challenged with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), was undertaken in this study. Twenty-one, three weeks old, crossbred pigs from a PRRSV-free commercial farm were separated into three groups, a control, non-infected group (3 pigs/group), and 2 groups (9 pigs/group), the first inoculated with a Thai-isolated European (O2SB3) strain and the second a Thai-isolated, North American (O1NP1) PRRSV strain. BALC were isolated from three infected pigs and one control on days 5, 9 and 15 post infection (DPI). The levels of IL-10 production in BALC …

Survival Rates, Growth Rates, Weaning Weights And The Impact Of A Colostrum Supplement In Low Birthweight Piglets, Kangsadarn Pinsumrit, Morakot Suparattanasit, Arisa Oponsawat, Padet Tummaruk, Annop Kunavongkrit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of the present study was to investigate survival rates, growth rates, weaning weights and the effect of colostrum in low birth weight piglets. The study was made on 288 piglets with a birth weight below 1 kg. After the individual birth weights were measured, the piglets were divided into 2 treatment groups, a control group (the piglets received colostrums after birth from their dams according to the usual management practice) and a colostrum supplemented group (piglets received an extra 20 ml of colostrum within 12 hrs of birth). The study showed that the survival rate of the low …

Genetic Polymorphism Of Beta And Kappa Casein In Crossbred Dairy Cattle, Chortip Aroondechachai, Chancharat Reodecha, Duangsmorn Suwattana, Monchai Duangjinda

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this study was to determine the frequencies of the genetic variants of the beta and kappa casein gene in 87 crossbred dairy cattle. Beta and kappa casein genotypes were investigated, the first by an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (ASPCR) and the second by a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Three beta casein alleles of A1, A2 and B were found, with frequencies of 0.30, 0.61 and 0.09, respectively. In total, five genotypes of A1 A1, A1 A2, A2 A2, A2B and A1B were found, with frequencies of 0.06, 0.41, 0.36, 0.11 and 0.06. Three kappa …

Karyotype Of Crossbred Progeny Born To The Interspecies Hybridization Of Wild And Zebu Cattle With Reference To Their Fertility And Growth Performance, Nussara Vadhanakul, Wanchai Tunwattana, Panpilai Sekkasiddhi, Montakarn Tansatit, Vivat Chavananikul

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Karyotypes of the crossbred progeny of wild and zebu cattle, born from the insemination of zebu dams with deep frozen semen from gaur (Bos gaurus) and banteng (Bos javanicus) sires were studied. The crossbred progeny (F1) born from the gaur sire and zebu dams revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=58. Fifty-four acrocentric and 2 submetacentric autosomes were found, sex chromosomes being submetacentric and metacentric in the male and submetacentric in the female. Two types of chromosomes with a complement of 2n=59 and 2n=58, were found in the crossbred progeny (F1) of the banteng sire and zebu dams. Robertsonian translocation …

Acetylcholinesterase Activity And Total Haemocyte Count In Black Tiger Shrimps (Penaeus Monodon) Exposed To Trifluralin At Therapeutic Levels For Ectoparasitic Treatment, Phanupong Chaowanit, Apirak Pleanplak, Rujira Sangarun, Lila Ruangpan, Janenuj Wongtavatchai, Piyarat Chansiripornchai Mar 2004

Acetylcholinesterase Activity And Total Haemocyte Count In Black Tiger Shrimps (Penaeus Monodon) Exposed To Trifluralin At Therapeutic Levels For Ectoparasitic Treatment, Phanupong Chaowanit, Apirak Pleanplak, Rujira Sangarun, Lila Ruangpan, Janenuj Wongtavatchai, Piyarat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Trifluralin, a herbicide, was observed for it's side effects when used, extralabel, as an ectoparasiticide in shrimp farming. Black tiger shrimp were exposed to trifluralin at a therapeutic level, commonly employed in shrimp farming, 0.1 or 0.2 ppm, for up to 96 hrs. Shrimp were examined 96 hrs after the primary dosage of trifluralin. The total haemocyte count in the exposed shrimp was not different from the control, unexposed shrimp. A significant reduction of muscle acetylcholinesterase was found in all exposed shrimp (p<0.05). Some of the exposed shrimp also demonstrated clinical signs of cholinergic overload characterized as abnormal movement. This study suggests sublethal effects when trifluralin is used for the treatment of shrimp ectoparasitic disease.

The Structure Of Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells And Thrombocytes In Freshwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus Siamensis), Kamol Sakulwira, Wutichai Klomklew, Siripen Vethchagarun, Wimon Pothiwong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Blood cells and thrombocytes from five crocodiles, three males and two females, were studied by both light and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). The blood cells could be categorized into red blood cells, white blood cells and thrombocytes. The nucleated red blood cells were oval in shape and the TEM study revealed vacuoles in the cytoplasm. The white blood cells fell into two groups; one with granules and the other without granules. The granulocytes were heterophils, eosinophils and basophils. The heterophils had an eccentrically oval nucleus and a large number of acidophilic rod-shaped granules in the cytoplasm. Eosinophils also posessed an …
